View Full Version : Is Police spotting the new Train spotting?
With all the constant threads about Police here, Police there, Helicopter over the fields, Bobbies on bikes and PCSOs you would think it has turned into a new sport.
Maybe you can start collecting Collar numbers - There are 4000 to collect in South Yorkshire. The irony is somewhere along the line someone on the forum is complaining about never seeing any Police anywhere. Well you could even take some photos, start website and trade pictures like Football Stickers or Top Trumps.
"The Police Motorcyclist score high for speed but the Superintendent wins on Power" or the Mountain bike Bobbies score high on stamina but the Female officer in uniform wins on Looks:hihi::hihi:
:hihi:
Brilliant post! It seems like you can't move on this forum for one person saying there are police about and another saying they never see them!
Who really cares, the police have jobs to do, let them?
Someone mentioned it to me the other day, something about an incident nerar Heavygate...people were on saing "oh the police are here, haven't they got something better to do". Turned out they arrested some Basque / ETA terrorists!!!
It's called people taking an interest in what's happening out on the streets.
Though I suppose the 'modern way' for all you metrosexuals out there is to just turn the iPod up a bit higher, and hurry on past without a shred of interest so that you won't be late home to get your microwave dinners on in time to watch the latest important installment of Hollyoaks.
;)

I'd rather invest my time on something a little more constructive than curtain twitching. This is just curtain twitching on a regional scale!

I would call it been nosey!
For the record I don't own a Microwave or an Ipod and only watch Hollyoaks on a Sunday Morning
We need more "curtain twitchers" and then we might have less scumbags getting away with murder - maybe if a few more neighbours had taken an interest in what was happening in their street in Warrington then that bloke wouldn't have ended up being killed? Maybe the fact that one or two 'curtain twitchers' were looking out instead of glued to the telly saying "it's none of my business" meant that those concerned were identified and caught quickly?
It will be the "curtain twitchers" of Heeley who provide the info to find the no-marks who killed those piglets. You can be assured of one thing, the people who had "something more constructive to do" won't be able to provide any information.
But then it's sooo important to appear cool and unconcerned isn't it? ;)

Spoken like a true "curtain twitcher" :)

Are you being serious?
People on the forum don't do anything about it, they just write about it on a forum! That is the same as seeing something and just turning the music up or going back to the TV.
It won't be the curtain twitchers who catch the mindless idiots responsible for Heely Farm, it will be the police, based on forensic evidence and contributions to crimestoppers.
As for appearing cool and unconcerned - thats is not a statement based on fact. If i saw something and thought the police would benefit from that info, and morally i could justify providing that information, i'd tell the police, not a forum.
You can have as many "Curtain Twitchers" as you want but on most occasions people tell the Police/Council/Sheffield Homes what has happened....great good for them but when asked to sign a statement or generally put it down on paper .....No chance! Hence your so-called "Scumbags" are still out and about doing what comes naturally. If they do get caught by the relevant authorities which believe it or not happens quite often, the Magistrates (Who are Community Members/Curtain Twichers who volunteer) let them out again.....For the Police/Council/Sheffield Homes to take the "Why don't you do something" Flack from the other "Curtain Twichers"
So you don't think people will read what's been posted and pass info on to the police? How naive!
People also post on things going on in their communities and it helps raise awareness - things like burglaries etc. Forums also perform a useful service in the modern age when not everyone knows all their neighbours - they do a lot more than provide virtual space to post your fart jokes you know ;)
SF is like a 'virtual garden fence' that people can chat over, if you don't like it then you know what do - build yourself a 'virtual compound' and lock yourself away from those of us who do benefit from sharing info and gossip. For myself, if there's a lot of traffic in town say, the first place I come to check out what's going down is SF.
Anyway, I'm pleased to live on a street where most residents are real-life "curtain twitchers". Much nicer than sharing the neighbourhood with people who've disappeared up their own bumholes as they have so little concern with what's going on around them. ;)

It’s a shame, but that statement is very true.
I sometimes wonder how the CPS can give such lenient sentences...oh that’s right, we're completely afraid to build a new prison because the Curtain Twitchers would go all 'Not In My Back Yard' on us and ensure planning application was refused.
This problem is cyclical.

I appreciate what you're trying to say, but why are you accusing everyone else of being "people who've disappeared up their own bumholes as they have so little concern with what's going on around them".
That is naive.

The problem is you have turned my funny (In my opinion) original post into a serious debate about law & order as though I personally attacked the Sheffield Forum. If I thought the Forum was useless then I would not be on here, I do find it useful, entertaining, engaging….even stimulating! Believe me if I didn't I would find something more constructive to do. I was passing comment about the amount of people who complain the Police are nowhere to be found yet by looking on the Forum they are everywhere! Stop taking life so seriously, surly you have something more constructive to do…like changing the curtains :hihi::hihi::hihi:

Because that's what has happened to people who are too 'kewl' to take an interest.
Here's how it works. If you hear screaming in the street you have a choice - go to see what's happening out there or remain in your chair. Odds on the screaming is nothing, but it could just be something serious - and I simply could not live with the guilt of having remained sitting on my butt and having done nothing.

Yeah, fair enough, but we have this topic roughly every four or five weeks on a regular basis anyway so the joke's perhaps a bit thin now ;)

Do you go outside and assist and then contact the relevant service (i.e. Police, Council), or do you simply look through the window and post about it on the forum?

Well judging the amount of post you have since joining, I seam to have "More constructive" things to do and don't notice when threads come back around every few months :D

If I hear anything untoward that I can't explain then I go to investigate. If it's something I can deal with then I do so, if it's something relevant for the emergency services then I contact them, if it's something just to warn fellow residents about then I might post here and/or tell my neighbours.
One thing I don't do is dismiss things as 'none of my business'. If it's happening in my street, my town, my country, then it IS my business.
kieran_grund 15-08-2007, 12:07 I dunno what you going on about. South Yorks Police is one of the best forces in the country.
As for sheffield, its not a rough, violent city. Yes its a city and has the odd murder, here and there like any other city.
Try living in inner city Birmingham, my sis is a copper there and she deals with over 50 gun related crimes a week, and on average gets 20 shootings a week, just on her patch.
helibish 15-08-2007, 22:30 mathom and kieran this is not intended at you.
i cant understand how you all can be so negitive regarding the police and curtain twitchers using your words, yesterday i posted about the police in woodhouse around tea time, yes i saw them and was out with my dog and yes i do take an interest, good for me i say. shorty had her car broken in to and her things stolen i may well have seen or heard somthing and YES!!! i would report it and make a statement make no mistake about it. when something happens to you and i hope it does not you will hope someone saw and phoned the police.
yes the police do there job and we let them get on with it, but you ask any officer her/she will tell you the public are a valueble sorce to their investigation.
