Hello all. Got a bit of a prob with my 5150 212, hopefully someone can advise me.

The problem is whenever you get to 3 on the post volume, the ammounts of ear splitting feedback is intollerable. This in on the lead channel as I use the rythem channel for my clean tone.

My friend who I bought it off said it was ready for retubing. Now I don't know anything but the basics about tube/valve amps, having used small solid states most of the time as I've only just really gone pro playing in a band.

So, question is. Would old tubes cause killer feedback? And does anyone know anywhere local that will service/retube amps? I know of Electro in Donny but wondered if there was anywhere more local.

Cheers chaps!

you could try wavelength on london road, i know they do repairs to guitars, not sure about amps.

Pete Hartley, also on london rd does a good job on amps. He's a bit further down london rd, if wavelength is on your left then he'll be on your right. Very easy to miss as it's only a small shop. Regarding feedback, (I assume you've tried another guitar to eliminate your pickups) valves going microphonic can easily cause it. You might be able to pin down the culprit by gently tapping each of the valves in turn.If one's badly microphonic you'll hear the difference. Not sure how easy they are to get at on the 5150 as they're a funny design and the valves are horizontally mounted as far as I remember. They are a good amp tho, should be worth doing.
Good luck
Bob

Thanks guys. I've tried 3 different guitars on it. My main Jackson KV2, a mutt Kelly and just to be sure an Epi V.

Did a shed load of reading up the other night and actually answered my own question  with what Bob said. Preamp valves becoming microphonic. Eurotubes say that the ECC83 S valves a good replacement as it's threshold is a lot higher and damn good in high gain amps like 5150's.

Looks like a trip to wavelength is in order when payday comes!

Thanks again guys.
