A couple of years ago and for a few years on the trot I would see them in town normally near the fountain on fargate.
A tall guy with a beard and normally dressed in a 60s type suit and his drawf friend would be in a superman costume or something. They would run about doing mad stuff on summer days.

What was their story? Does any one know?

I was told that they were traveling actors by a few people .
I was also told that they were on day release from Middlewood.

Personally I prefer the first one, but one day I was asked for my name and address by clipboard man, and it got me wondering.

If any one knows there story Id be glad to hear it.

This was not a dream , honest. I wasn't the only one to see them.

I think you are confusing real life with the 70's TV show "Fantasy Island", please seek help.

I remember seeing a tall bearded guy with a clip board on several occasions in Fargate and the Moor. He had sandy colured hair, had thick glasses and and often wore a hat and a suit. Never saw the dwarf though - although perhaps as I'm tall he was below my eye line at the time

The tall bloke with the clipboard and beard usually seen on Fargate is a Market Researcher. He takes his victims back to the Montgomery Hall or the Middle Chapel on Norfolk St.

They used to do all kinds of stunts and things around the centre of Sheffield - they used the name 'Acting On Fargate' (or something similar). Usually pretty bonkers stuff, as described above.

The small fella was an Equity-card holding actor I believe - he was in the Lyceum's Christmas production of 'Snow White' around 1993 or '94, but very sadly died in the middle of the run.

Don't know anything about the other guy though I'm afraid. He might or might not still do stuff like that, but I don't live in Sheff any more and haven't seen him/them for years.

Tall guy if I remember right was called Dave and he was a member of the Cocker family.
The cousin of Jarvis Cocker, he was on the same music technology course as me in 1990.

The dwarf did indeed die some years back.

They just got off on expressing themselves artistically in this way.

The sort of thing Jackass did 10 years later.

I think Dave could have been Sheffield's Peter Kay if he did'nt confuse and wind people up so much:loopy:

The dwarf, Julian, went to Colley School and was in the year above me, sadly as has been stated he did die a few years back, the other guy, if its who I think it is, is definately a member of the Cocker family ;) (And its not me!) :P

You're right about Julian, the small one. The other bloke was Dave Aston, who actually went to City School with Jarvis Cocker, but wasn't related. They lived around the corner from one another in Intake.

TYhe clipboard/beard man is someone different, but does look like Dave.

I used to p*ss about on Fargate with the lads back in the day. They once got nicked for messing about in HL Brown. We went to court to see them, where they tried to represent themselves in funny voices... Got a right bllking off the judge.

We once sat up all night drawing caracatures of snooker players, and sold them on Fargate the following day. They were awful. We also used to chase David Blunkett whenever we saw him.

Great days.

I went to school with Dave Aston - Azzo as he was known. I remember one day he came to school with a parachute and tried jumping off the school bank to see if he could fly!
Not sure what he's up to these days though, but he's definitely not the tall market research bloke on the Moor (unless he's aged alot since we left school!).

Ah, Dave Aston, that takes me back...

I used to work at the Condom Shop, Dave used to work at The Fountain Bar. At the time I knew him he did claim to be vaguely related to Jarvis Cocker...

Last time I saw him he was walking around dressed as a vicar (complete with freshly-shaved bald patch) carrying a bible & one of them incense thingamajiggumies blessing people on Fargate.

Great days indeed smedleydude...

It's not Azo that now does the market research in town. I havn't seen him for a few years now, come to think of him.

I was in the same year as him at City, and would hope that the big daft lad is still knocking around somewhere, dwarf or no dwarf....

yeah i used to hang around with azzo and jules.

ive known azzo for years........from the youth club at city school.
and jules on the punk scene from about 1986?
jules was one of my best friends and a good drinking / smoking buddy R.I.P

me an jules had some good times, we went to the free heineken festival in leeds one year to see the stranglers, that was a laugh and a half, we drunk ourselves skint the first day

yeah azzo and jules were the nutters walking about dressing up being silly on fargate.

once i stuck a wig on, and jules did and we entered virgin on fargate, as i was banned for shoplifting, just to see how far we got, not very far as it happens, the security guard recognised BOTh of us :P

jules appeared in the film willow, well his hand did, handing an apple over on a fruit stall, i think he was in a crowd scene too.
sadly he passed away a long time ago now, drunk himself to death........silly ****er :)
at least he died doing what he enjoyed :)
he was one top bloke, as they say the best always go first :(
wouldnt mind contacting azzo if hes online tho too

Azzo used to play keyboards for our band at City School "The Electric Armpits". He was a decent chap with lots of bottle - he did a solo concert playing what sounded like "Kids In America" but singing "kids with hysteria" I think. He helped write our "christmas single" which was much appreciated by Frank Sidebottom. Not seen him since the Fargate days.

The tall dude with the clipboard... there was a sketch on The League of Gentlemen a couple of years ago that reminded me so much of him, it must have been based on this dude.

I remember seeing these 2, it was 1992-3 and Julian was dressed in his Elvis suit, shouting abuse to a guy (Dave) dressed as a city Toff with Briefcase, brolly and bowler hat. we were in stitches and followed them for hours hehehe

Snow White was at the Lyceum over the 1994/95 Christmas season - it was my last year working in the box office there and I remember it pretty clearly. That was the run when Jules sadly died.

if only jules was here to tell you the story of the night he was attacked by a tin of baked beans, youve never seen anything so funny. we were campin out, got a fire goin to cook some grub & he chucked a tin of beans on forgettin to pierce the tin 1st, 10 minutes later the tin exploded covering him in the stuff. half an hour later the police arrived cos of complaints from the neighbourhood of shotguns being fired, they dint half take some convincing it was exploding beans

:hihi::thumbsup::thumbsup:ha ha, I remember them fondly.... I used to knock about on the top on the sevenside and every so often they like to come and torment us.... I remember once Azzo dressed as a woman and his mate (Gary?) in a suit going for a slap up meal and drink up Woodhouse... another time Azzo reckoned a drug deal had gone wrong and he had sold someone baking soda.... 5 mins later Jules came running down with a baseball bat, we then saw Azzo driving down Stradbroke Road with Jules stood on the back seat holding a fake gun to Azzo's head....
They did used to enjoy handing out beer and ciggies to us too..... I'd love to know what happened to him... The guy was a legend..
:hihi::thumbsup::thumbsup:

If it's the same Dave Aston you're all on about, I know him and he is alive and well and still in Sheffield.
