View Full Version : Plusnet – Is It Their Fault

I am having trouble accessing certain web sites. Its always the same sites that are affected. When I try to access the sites I either get the “Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage” message or the site does not display properly, text and images not formatted correctly, or images missing. A few presses of the F5 key to refresh the page sometimes brings the page up correctly, other times refreshing makes no difference. Its always the same sites, other sites work ok. The sites are established, mainstream sites, like the BBC news site and play.com as two examples. I have a second pc on the network (I have a modem/router) and that has the same symptoms, as does a connected laptop, so I know its not the PC. I have tried a second modem/router, so I know its not that. I have tried my dial-up connection, and that works fine, meaning the issue is linked to broadband. I have been in email contact with their technical support for over a week now, the last thing I heard from them was last Thursday saying ‘they will forward the details onto our networks team for further assistance.’
Having eliminated likely faults at my end, does that mean the fault is at Plusnets end.

I have the same problems from time to time and would be very interested in the answer.

Have you tried running a tracert to one of the affected sites?

It also might be worth looking on the Plusnet forums as I seem to remember this sort of problem cropping up from time to time.

Might be worth trying different DNS servers, too, if you're using the Plusnet ones.

May be an issue with intermittent sync, if you PM me your plusnet account username I can have a look and get back to you. Alternatively log in to the forums on our site at http://community.plus.net and post there and we can pick it up for you.

Following advice on this site, I have tweaked my MTU/RWIN settings and changed my DNS settings on my modem/router, changing it from 'Get Automatically From ISP' to manually putting in a value, following the settings on this page: http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/dns.htm

Changing the DNS settings seemed to have the biggest effect. It appears to have solved the problem, I have tried several of my problem pages and they are all working. Touchwood, all now seems back to normal.

Glad that you seem to be sorted

But, as a Plusnet customer myself, I'm a bit concerned that they failed to come up with anything in over a week, when it took just one day on here... Care to comment, Matt? :)

Sure. Sorry about the delays, basically the ticket submitted to us went back and forth a couple times between the support centre and sandbox, then got sent on the third day up to our networks team and has been passed back and forth from there to the customer. Unfortunately the delay came because the ticket did not go straight back from sandbox to the networks team, but had to be passed back through the support centre first (this is done both for sanity checking and because someone in the support centre might be able to help).

Having said that, you can usually find me or one of our other comms agents here or on the PlusNet forums (http://community.plus.net/forum/) and we're always happy to chase something up if need be.
