View Full Version : Where is the best place for RAM?
I am wanting some PC2100 200 pin so dimm RAM.
I am wondering where you guys get yours from?. I've just been to PC world but they want £49 for 256MB:o
I'm sure i have seen it half that price somewhere online. If this is the case i may as well buy 512MB from somewhere else.

Ram I always buy Crucial or kingston memory. don't touch the e-buyer brand as it's crap and causes freezing.

Often you can buy stuff at e-buyer, which is cheaper than what the shops say they can buy it for. I once got a USB modem for about 14 quid and I showed the bloke at Crown and he nearly blew his top.

i'd 2nd crucial, prices are good and the quality is also reliable.

If you're not 100% sure which memory to get (and the types/specs seem to multiply by the week!), Crucial have a tool that analyses your PC and tells you which RAM you need. There's a link from www.crucial.com (needs Internet Explorer rather than any other browser). Once you know which kind you need, you are of course free to buy it from any distributor. Most useful when you can't remember which machine's got which RAM in it and can't be a*sed to take the case off again!
Well Crucial is recommending DDR PC2700 but my laptop manual says PC2100!
Am i right in thinking the PC2700 RAM will still work ok (albeit slower!)

getting memory that is rated higher (ie faster) should never cause a problem, that's just hte maximum rate it can work at.

That's me but asking for P¨C2100 ain'"t going far, perhaps saying "I'm looking for 266MHz" would be more useful, it's like Athlon calling their processors XP3200+, you don't know what's it about ;)
It's hard to see what you want if the motherboard manufacturer says its board requires 333 and you're thinking in PC**00 !
That's ust me and my 2 cents.

Just to ensure nobody takes this too literally without applying a liddle common sense.
This is generally true IF it's the same type of RAM... (socket type).
When in doubt, something like the compatability checker on Crucial is a good bet to be sure you're not about to make a big blunder though.

Why do PC World charge twice as much as everyone else?....Do they not think that word will spread?.
The same thing happened with the cycle manufacturer Raleigh. Look where they are now! :nono:

there are very few highstreet IT chains. They sell to the people who haven't got enough knowledge to buy anywhere else.
Ordered 512MB from Crucial at 2am Wed morning. Just fitted it now :D .
