View Full Version : Bradleys Records shop and chapel walk clock shop
goldenfleece 28-12-2004, 11:05 Oh, this was circa early 80's, but which shop is now occupying bradleys Records on fargate. It used to be adjacent to RADIO RENTALS shop which was on a corner, and also next to JEAN GENIE jean shop, opposite WESTERN JEAN COMPANY.
Walked past it yesterday and could not work out which shops now use this space......
and whilst on the subject of old shops, does anyone recall the watch and clock shop on Chapel Walk circa 1982 that sold cuckoo clocks? I got my faithful cuckoo clock from there in 82, and they has a great selection of German Black Forest cuckoo clocks.
BladeBabe 29-12-2004, 21:49 I had a Saturday Job at Bambers on fargate in the 1977-78. That was next door to Jean Jeanie. Girly Wig used to be there too. I cant remember when it closed though as I left in1978
I thought Bradleys records was on Chapel Walk. Musical instruments upstairs and records downstairs. Chanked to a shoe shop later on

No, the shop on Chapel Walk was Cann's. Bradley's was opposite the fountain on Fargate.
BarneyGumble 30-12-2004, 08:51 There was a Bradleys on Chapel walk and another one at the top of Fargate if my memory serves me correctly

I don't recall two record shops on Chapel Walk. I think you're confusing Bradleys with Cann's.
there was 3 bradleys the other one was on pinstone street:)
BarneyGumble 30-12-2004, 20:09 Panda, Do you agree that one of the Bradleys
was on Chapel walk?, If so maybe it was the shop that used to be cann's... Anyone?
babyboom 30-12-2004, 21:53 There was definately a branch of Bradleys on chapel walk, I remember going in with my older sister every saturday, and I remember the one on Fargate too!
bostonaire 31-12-2004, 04:56 bradleys took over from canns???
mojoworking 31-12-2004, 05:39 Just to confuse things further, in an earlier thread, someone claimed that Cann's on Chapel Walk later became Vallances
Ousetunes 31-12-2004, 10:24 Remember Bradley's on Fargate, remember going with my brother and alone on numerous occasions. And I too think, but can't be sure, that they had a branch in Chapel Walk.
I used to buy my 45s and 33s from Bradley's, from the downstairs department at WHSmith (Say Hello, Wave Goodbye in 1982) and used to walk down to Moorfoot to Virgin which had a good selection of (ahem, Clare Grogan) posters. That shop was always so dull.
I think Our Price on the more opened as a Revolver store in the early eighties. And it was a relief when HMV opened on Pinstone Street. I got my first CD player in 1985, so used to have to go upstairs to their limited CD selection until CD caught on big time.
Also, Laskey's had a music department. I bought Frankie Goes To Hollywood CD there in 1984. And on High Street was Virgin in the mid-eighties, on the left before Banker's Draft building. That was a good shop. I got 10% off all purchases when I opened my first current account in 1986 at TSB. I was entitled to a cleverly named TSBeat card for Virgin so spent man a Saturday in there spending some of my wages! I recall buying a Prince CD. How tastes change huh?
Speaking of Cann's - I used to work at Phillip Cann (Cann, Cann - The Music Man' lol!) when they were in Dixon Lane, circa 1958/9. I left Sheffield in 1960, but some years later, on a visit home, I remember going into Cann's after it had moved to Chapel Walk and finding two of the former staff still working there - and they recognised me too Lol! :-)
RiffRaff 31-03-2005, 21:24 Used to nip into Bradley's (top of Fargate, a few doors down from the Yorks Bank on the corner) to listen to new LP's during my lunchbreak....This would be '68/'69?
They had 2 (3?) stand-in booths at the far left-hand side of the shop where (if the staff weren't too busy and you didn't prat about) they would let you listen to an album before buying it...
I seem to remember a guy called Barry being manager, and a really terrific looking lass working there...long-haired blonde, really tiny, way less than 5' tall - a real stunner, and I was really taken with her.....
I remember getting a bit of a shock when she told me that she was mid-twenties; I was only 18/19, and that age difference was a definite no-no!
Wonder whatever became of her?
I lived in the 60ties in Sheffield and I remember Cann’s on Chapel Walk. I brought my first electric Guitar (A Japanese model) at Canns in 1964 with a huge valve Amp from H+H.
Here is a photo of it – Any ideas what it is?

A couple of years later I purchased a Gibson acoustic at Canns. Both guitars I had to leave behind in Nigeria when I was evacuated during the Biafra war.
Bradleys never had a shop in Chapel Walk. Their main office was at Fargate, The manager was called Barry Smith. Then they had a shop selling musical instruments and very cheap American RCA imports LP’s at a shop on West Street just before Carver Street.
Also they opened a shop at Pinstone Street just before the Cambridge Street intersection, I remember the manager being called Alan Trower.
Bradleys were originally from Royston and the owner was called Ron Bradley.
I purchased literally hundreds of records from Bradley’s.
Wilson Pecks was another music store on the corner of Barkers Pool and Leopold Street. Sheet music I used to buy at W & Ps and at Phillip Cann but I used to buy 45’s & LP’s at Bradley’s cause they gave me good discount.

Philip Cann the Music Man was on Chapel Walk Mojo.
HEY! I thought you were banned? :o :o :o

HI THERE
yes i remember these 2 record shops on chapel walk, they were more or less opposite each other. Vallences was on the left hand side when you came off fargate and Bradleys was the smaller shop on the right

Vallances used to be Phillip Cannes not Bradleys.
Merry_Legs 19-06-2006, 09:24 I remember the Bradleys on Pinstone St, Fargate and Chapel Walk, I remember seeing the Tourists playing downstairs at the one on Chapel Walk.
Sweetcheeks 20-06-2006, 18:14 Whenever I asked for a particular record at Bradleys the assistant would always ask me to repeat what I`d requested, walk to the rack behind them, shuffle a few records around as if searching, turn and say sorry, we don`t have that one! Nowadays they don`t even look before informing me that they don`t have it. Thank Heaven for the Internet!
I think Our Price on the Moor originally opened as a shop called Music Market (or something like that involving extensive use of the letter 'M').
I worked in that branch of Our Price over Christmas and New Year 1989-90 - my abiding memory is a heaving mass of humanity facing me across the counter, all waving Phil Collins, Tina Turner and Lisa Stansfield albums at me. Never worked so hard in my life before or since - and when they offered me a permanent job, I turned it down because I was so exhausted! Mind you, I was working every evening at The Crucible too. And I was still broke.
DEANOFDISCO 22-06-2006, 18:44 Hi,
As many have stated, there were three Bradleys records shops in Sheffield. One on Fargate, one on Pinstone street (where the Greggs is now, I think) and one on Fargate.
The other shop on Fargate was Vallances. This used be Canns.
The Bradleys on Fargate had a downstairs part to it.
Used to buy some of my singles and Lps from these places in the 70s and early 80s.

I worked for both Cann`s and Bradleys in the 70`s and can confirm that Bradleys did not have a shop in Chapel Walk. That was Cann`s..which was later taken over by Valances. The owners of Bradleys were John Bradley And Ron Neal and they came from Worksop. The manager of the West St Bradleys shop was Rod Bateman . That shop was a dedicated musical instrument shop and didn't sell records.
Hi Cossy,
I thought Ron Neal came from Rochdale? I also remember a Barry Smith being a manager at Fargate. As for the shop at West Street, it was for musical instruments but they also had a load of RCA American Imports (Dynaflex) The LP covers used to have one corner dented as they were imports. They were a lot cheaper than UK editions. I used to purchase a lot of Elvis, Jerry Reed at this place. I used to work at RTU on Carver Street and spent many a lunch hours at this West Street branch testing guitars.
My first guitar I purchased at Canns..
