They are huge, need very careful diet management and insurance is an absolute must - they are shortlived in general and are prone to several deadly health issues including Torsion and Bloat - consequently, they are phenominally expensive to insure and are classed as a special breed. They are also working hounds and will chase smaller pets which they consider to be 'prey' so if you have cats, rabbits or small dogs, you need to be very careful. They are true gently giants with people though and once you've been sat on or leant against by one, you'll want one. I really love Great Danes, but again, this is a shortlived breed and it would break my heart to lose one - plus, the insurance must be pretty high for GDs too. It costs £30 pm with petplan just for my dobe so dread to think what a wolfie or a dane could cost. |
