hey
i bought a Napa MP3 512mb Player today and iv been downloading songs on it and the first 6 went on great (the ones id downloaded from the internet) and then i moved onto transfering my CDs and that went on okay but when i went to play it i selected the song and pressed play and the MP3 player froze. i couldnt even turn it off i had to take the battery out. any ideas? i really dont want to have to trek back to meadowhall tomorrow please help! i bought it from dixons who dont have a good track record with me (everything me or anyone i know has bought from there has been faulty) but i dont really know anywhere else to buy MP3 players from in meadowhall. thinking maybe i shud have stuck it out till end of jan for an iPod now...

EDIT: it plays my MP3s iv loaded up but not WAV any ideas how to change the format? cos i think that may be the problem. says on the packet it supports MP3 and WMA

EDIT #2: i changed all my files to WMA (by changing my music player to Windows Media Player) and it still freezes on the files. ARGH! :help:

Perhaps it's something to do with copyright protection??

Sounds like its how your ripping your music. On your computer play one of the files you downloaded an one you ripped from a CD, it will tell you the file type in something like winamp. Or first maybe its because you ripping with variable bit rate or something, try it 192K/sec. What are you using to rip your music ? I used to use CDex, its free and really easy to use.

hey
on the packet it says it plays MP3s and WMAs so i have downloaded onto the MP3 player and it plays the MP3s fine with no problem but when i click to play a WMA it either freezes or goes to play an MP3. I tried to download onto the mp3 player a new song that id just put from a CD onto the PC in WMA format and it just froze.
my dads taking it back tomorrow to tlk to someone who actually knows what they are doing and not the halfwits that have served me before. should have gone for the packard bell one now.... :loopy:

Okay Franc I hope you grabbed the stable version and not the beta.

Next just start the program (if you havnt installed it yet just install it with default options, if will place an icon on your desktop, click that new icon) Put a audio CD in the drive, if you have more than one CD/DVD drive just click the correct one from the little drop down list near the top of the program window. Now just choose the tracks you would like to convert an press F9. Give it some time to process and you will find the MP3's in your "my documents" folder in the "my music" area. Good luck.

Two words:

not Ipod.

It' not the best, nor the cheapest.

Definitely get a Creative or from the best of the best of the best: Iriver => HERE (http://www.iriver.com/eu/index.asp).
Ipod is a Playmobil toy beside Irver.

Oh dear, another one that believes the hype.

Whatever anyone does, don't buy an overpriced piece of tat, like the ipod.

Yup - iRiver are awesome! I was treated to a special b'day pressie of an H340 and once you work out the menus it is simply incredible and the sound fabulous.

I've been storing music files and photos in all sorts of formats while iPod have been talking about it!

Not being funny or owt-- but the Iriver looks ****e compared to the Pod.. and it looks very fragile.

But is has got a digital camera on it though....
Cos thats what everyone really wants on a MP3 player????

Basically people who come out with this comment I have found either a: Cant afford an Ipod OR b: Jealous of people with Ipods.

Which category do you fall into?

And its not overpriced-- it does the job you pay for it.

AND dont listen to the ****** about the battery life of the Ipods.
I've had mine well over a year now and it works perfectly everytime.. probably the best £150 I have ever spent.

That said.. I also have an Archos AV-340 that kicks everythings arse-- apart from the new models of course.

I can put full DVD's if I wish upon it.. also I can record from TV/RADIO direct as well.

It's worth noting that your mileage will vary depending on what you use your MP3 player for and the sort of budget, etc... you have.

Like everything else check the reviews as much as possible and try to check for review reliability. Especially when reviews are stated as "fact" when the user in question has only every experienced one unit and had no opportunity to carry out any comparison whatsoever..

Very true - what you say there mate.
Although reviews are sometimes misleading though yes--

People say to me all the time for example that Norton AV is the best anti-virus on the market - when in fact its ********.
But it has been reviewed and given lots of awards all the time.

Ipods have some bad press- but where does that come from?
Competitors perhaps?? Possibly.

And to be honest the battery myth of the Ipod is more of an urban legend rather than fact banded about by jealousy rather than people in the know.

Not wishing to get into a seven page debate on the subject but....

I'm not jealous, I don't want an Ipod, I could easily afford one. I just choose to spend my money on things that aren't over marketed and under engineered.

I can't see why anyone wants one other than they've believed the hype and rushed straight out and bought one without comparing it to all the others.

AND the fact that they are the best mp3 player on the market and also the best looking to boot... back to you mate.

I didnt rush out and buy one beliving the hype-- I bided my time and read the reviews and made the decision + my friend has one that I had a muck about with also.

It is not FACT... it's an opinion and you're qualifying it with your experience and that of one other person...

If you want more people to accept your opinion, then state it as such and back it up with references to articles from experts, review sites, etc... that support your claim. People will listen a lot harder if you do...

Your opinion is no more valuable than anyone elses on here though so if we could have a little less of the "get the last word in" stuff that would be good, otherwise you're going to get ignored.

Whoa whoa whoa there...
I dont have to back up anything to anyone on here-
You can all make your own minds up on here.

I dont have to go trawling thru the internet to find pieces to back up claims-- say for example then that-

I offered you an Ipod or some other mp3 player for £50.
Which one would you honestly take from me for that price.
You'd choose the pod-- be honest.

And I've never said my opinion is more valuable than anyone elses- you have taken it the wrong way guy- Im just stating an opinion like everyone on here has the right to do- so please dont take offence as I dont mean any.

AND also no offence intended again here..

But who are you to say that everyone is gonna ignore me on here just cos you dont like what I say or do??

You are not a moderator.. please dont act like one.

Peace.

It's an opinion and constructive criticism... Up to you if you accept or ignore it... but I base it on experience as a forum user, moderator and owner (although not as the last two on here obviously). Quality over quanitity is a good maxim.

If you have a complaint, feel free to exercise your right to report the post... My actions aren't those of a moderator though... what I've done it to provide some balanced input in a thread where someone has spent most of their time shouting down everyone else with a differing view, as you have done in this thread.

Then I am sorry if I have offended anyone in this thread and of course I WONT be reporting you martin.
Why should I - you have done nothing wrong in the slightest??

Just to note, I have seen iRiver and iPod mp3 players and not really developed an opinion of my own as yet...

So, thinking in a constructive vein, and having tried to find a decent review site I'd really love to know of some good, level headed review sites that tackle this sort of thing in a no-nonsense way... Oh and also understand that the UK pricing/availability is different from the US..

My main issue, if you want to call it that, is that yelling about conspiracy theories re: batteries, etc... makes me wonder what the heck the deal is/was re: batteries in ipods.. What counts is reviews, personal recommendations from more than one person and a whole lot of info on things like support, battery life, storage, price, reliability, etc...

Anyways... it's becoming a bit of a slug fest... so I'll bow out and just leave it there..

Well having looked at and listened to as many as I could I have to say that the iRiver H340 came out well above the iPod which sonically just doesn't compare.

True, iPod looks great, but they still have a pants battery life, and are still struggling on with a monocrome screen! The H340 looks just fine in its carbon fibre finish , though it is a little on the pricey side. The iRiver / Sennheiser earbuds blow away the iPod 'look at me/mug me' phones.

No doubt iPod will catch up one day. ;)

Personally I'm going for either a Rio Karma or an Iriver in the very near future... Ipod's do suck, most review sites will tell you that, they have the worst file compatability out of nearly all the other HD MP3 players...

do they support WMA? umm no...
do they support OGG? umm no....
do they support flac? umm no...
do they look good? sorta...
do they have amazing menu's and options? umm... no
do they have a wickid docking station? umm... no
does the docking station have RCA out? no
does it have ethernet out? no...
is it the 2nd most stealable thing after mobile phones? yes...

I think I'll stick with buying a Rio Karma ;)

http://www.digitalnetworksna.com/shop/_templates/item_main_Rio.asp?model=261

check out reviews for it, it rocks! oh and, over here its around the £190 mark :)
