View Full Version : What does IMO stand for?
sparklesista 27-12-2004, 14:44 These may make me sound totally thick but what does IMO stand for?
I guess if you don't ask, you won't know!
Is there anyone else that doesn't understand what it means?
I remember a few years ago when I didn't know what lol stood for!
I think I've seen IMHO as well?
Somebody please tell me! :D
In My Opinion
In My Humble Opinion
IMO generally means (In My Opinion)
IMHO is not quite a clear and can mean a number of things but here are some of the more common:
In My Humble Opinion
In My Honest Opinion
In My Highest Opinion
In My Holy Opinion
In My Hesitating Opinion
sparklesista 27-12-2004, 15:05 Thanks for the feedback!
Now I can read posts without them sounding odd!
Martin_s 27-12-2004, 15:13 IIRC - if I remember correctly
RTFM - read the ****ing manual
ROFLMAO - roll of floor laughing my ass off
PMSL - P*** myself laughing
etc... :)
If you come across an acronym you're not sure of, tap it in here and it'll tell you what it is.

LMAO - Laugh My Ass Off
LMFAO - Laugh My F***ing Ass Off
muddycoffee 28-12-2004, 09:28 I know I'm slightly odd, but I find it annoying that some people use these shorthands for common phrases. I could understand it if you were writing a text message, as it is more laborious and you have a shortage of space.
But when you are usung a computer keyboard, it is possible to type as fast as you can think. I think it's lazy, and ugly. :gag:
True.
But a lot of people can't differentiate between the Internet and their mobile phones, so they use shorthand in both, Chav culture comes into it a bit as well... Sorry but it's a known fact that Chavs use terms like LOL and ROFLMAO etc all the time.

Hate to burst your bubble Rich, but a huge majority of people use 'terms' like that
SparkleSista... Net Lingo (http://www.netlingo.com/) might help, breaks down all the internet and text language used in our world today :D

I'm sorry, Deejay
I believe you're wrong. A minority of people use these terrible acronyms. If you have such a limited vocabulary then you should consider alternatives that other people are using.
For every post which asks what these strange Mnemonics are, there must be several people who can't be bothered to ask. And if you look through the threads, there are numerous postings asking for clues.
Next we'll have people posting messages without using any vowels.

There are two types of shorthand. There's the general acronyms I use a lot on usenet, i.e. TBH, IMO, AFAIK etc... which are perfectly understandable and acceptable once you get used to the few common ones.
What does really annoy me though is people who can't write anything at all in longhand, e.g. usenet postings that are just like text messages with lots of m8, thx, plz etc... and no punctuation or grammar etc....
I blame the shoddy state of schools nowadays, if you tell anyone to bugger off and come back when they've learnt how to form sentences correctly they get on the defensive, but still can't write a reply in a coherent fashion with any applied thought.
I wish everyone would stop going on about 'chavs'

Sorry, but they are not mnemonics. A mnemonic is a learning aid - For example the phrase Every Good Boy Deserves Favour, which is used to help remember the lines on a music stave (EGBDF).
In addition, most of them aren't even acronyms. An acronym is a word formed from the initial letters of a name, so that doesn't really work either.
The things you are discussing here are simply abbreviations.

Yes and there's (Fat Cows Go Dancing Along Eating Bananas) to help you with the order of sharps across the musical key signatures. Or of course the traditional (Father Charles Goes Down And Ends Battle) for the same job.
Thanks for correcting me. I only knew the word Mnemonic from machine code computer programming, where words like MOV and ADD were used for simple functions. Although in this guise they could hardly be expected to be a memory aid.

For ages (like between about 1982 and 1995) I used Usenet and a great many Bulletin Board systems and the use of stuff like LOL, ROTFL, IMHO, etc. was pretty common amongst teh online community - I guess that as the number of people using the various online systems increasing there are bound to be increasing numbers of people not knowing the acronymns.
There are also a few 'in joke' acronymns in use - a set of Unix type programs are kown as GNU - Gnu's Not Unix - and (allegedly) TWAIN - Technology Without An Interesting Name.
Hey, it's geeky...:)
