View Full Version : Sunday training runs
NickDuggan 12-08-2007, 12:19 Each week the Sheffield Running Club organises a run of between an hour and an hour and a half at about 10 minute mile pace.Today Sunday we ran from Wortley in North Sheffield.Next week we are planning to run from the pavilion at Graves Part at 10.30 am.It where Derbyshire Lane meets Hemsworth Rd.if you would like to run and have some company why not give it a try.
sarah_glover 13-08-2007, 19:13 Yes, we had a lovely run yesterday. Nice socialable run with a very friendly group of people. Everyone welcome.
I'm no good at guesstimating pace, done a couple of 10ks now at about an hour each time. So 10km/hr.
How does that translate to minutes/mile (other than slow! ;) )
sarah_glover 13-08-2007, 19:53 10K is just over 6 miles so you're running about 10 min miles in these races. You should be fine joining us on a training run :)
suspect an hour to hour+half at that speed would kill me...but only one way to improve!
sarah_glover 13-08-2007, 20:10 If you've run a 10K at that pace I'm sure you will be fine. We have a few faster and a few slower runners so you wouldn't be left behind.
Sheffield running Club also meet at Don Valley Stadium at 6pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays and caters for all abilities. As I said before we're very friendly, just turn up if you fancy trying a run with us.
Tues/Thurs not going to happen, but Sunday might. Keep posting where you're going folks I get along to join you one day!
I assume you finish roughly where you start (so I can find the car!)?
sarah_glover 13-08-2007, 20:24 We either run and out and back route or a circular one, so yes we always end up back where we start!
We'll try and post where the next run is each week on here. Hope you can join us.
NickDuggan 15-08-2007, 16:59 the other venues that we are likely to use are Rivelin and Loxley ,Huntersbar/Endcliffe and Don Valley.
Which of these are most popular ?
any other popular starting points to suggest.
Rivelin, Loxley, Don /valley all do-able for me (slowly) but would rather not go too off-road atm, my ankle still isn't right after Judo match last November :(
Don't want to redo it while it's weak.
NickDuggan 17-08-2007, 17:22 will keep posting runs on Forum ,this Sunday 19 th july10.30am at Graves Park Pavilion at the junction of Derbyshire Lane/ Hemsworth rd.Easy Run in park,on grass and paths.pace 9-10 minutes a mile, anything from 3 miles 1 lap up to 9 miles 3 laps.Come along join in ,for as little as you like.Good training for the Great Yorkshire Run.At the park ask for Dave or Nick

NickDuggan 17-08-2007, 23:25 Yes its August doesn`t time fly.
NickDuggan 19-08-2007, 13:06 Excellent run this morning even if it did rain , a range of laps round Graves Park someone even joined us on a bike .Twelve runners range of abilities look out for future Sunday venues on the forum or on www.Sheffieldrunningclub.co.uk
Hiya mate, 30yr old wondering if i can still do what i did afew years ago. would like some details about your running club. been running a couple of times recently in my locale (walkley) but think i'd be better motivated with a club and that pace sounds about right to start with
sarah_glover 22-08-2007, 07:45 Hi Aaron,
Sheffield Running Club meets at Don Valley Stadium on Tuesday and Thursday evenings at 6pm. Tuesday sessions are an hour(ish) run, with different groups running differing paces, the slower group being 9/10 min miles. Thursday sessions are usually speed sessions, with varying formats.
We also meet on Sunday mornings for a long steady run, various locations around the city, Rivelin, Loxely, Graves Park, Wortley.
Why not come down on a Tuesday or Thursday, we meet at the end of the indoor straight, ask for Nick or Dave?
NickDuggan 22-08-2007, 20:05 aaron just come down and give it a try ,good time to start as we have 2 or three new members joining each week .If you want to get fit to race next year ideal to train with others during the winter.
a bit more information on www.sheffieldrunningclub.co.uk.
No sunday run this week as its Bank holiday.
sarah_glover 29-08-2007, 11:57 Sunday 2nd September we are training at Damflask, meeting at 10.30am by the wall on the approach to the dam.
Damflask eh? That's my usual trotting spot :)
Might manage to meet you all then!
When you say the wall...do you mean by the road going over the dam?
sarah_glover 29-08-2007, 14:49 Yes, we usually meet just on the corner between the Dam wall and Loxley Road.
Hope to see you there.
NickDuggan 29-08-2007, 17:09 Thanks for the update Sarah, hope to join you.Any other budding runners who want company for a long run at 10 minute mile pace welcome to come along, godd preparation for the Great Yorkshire Run.
When you say 'long' run...
Hi, Where is Damflask? I am new here in sheffield, I want to join the coming sunday running, please let me know the detail, like address or post code, thank you very much. jlpeter1968@hotmail.com
NickDuggan 30-08-2007, 19:59 Long run probably 9 to 10 miles although as its out and back you could do less.Dam Flask is on Loxley Rd going out from Hillsborough on the way to Bradfield.Park and meet by the Dam Wall.
NickDuggan 02-09-2007, 12:53 good run today two or three laps of Dam Flask, loads of runners around. As next week is Great Yorkshire Run no run, next run two weeks, watch this space. If you want to run in betwen tuesdays and thursdays at Don Valley 6pm meet at the end of the indoor straight.
9 - 10 miles a bit far for me right now...so I gave it a miss.
I'm doing well if I manage 2 laps of Damflask right now!
NickDuggan 03-09-2007, 21:45 doing less is fine,we always have shorter options.
NickDuggan 11-09-2007, 20:55 enjoyed the great Yorkshire Run why not join us for a Sunday Run.This Sunday Don valley at 10.30am easy run 9 to 10 minute miles opportunities to turn around at various points.
Hi,
I have in the last few months started running again and now can do a lap of dam flask (on the track inside, not road) in about 35mins so I'm guessing that's about 10 min mile but have not run much further than that.
Have sent entry for Percy Pud although probably won't get in, however need to train up for distance.
Also thinking of entering London marathon next April. Am I being very over ambitious here. Never done full marathon before, only halfs and they were decades ago, so most is 10km a few years ago!!!
Your runs round dam sound good so I can dip out after two laps at first. Is it similar at Don Valley if I try that? I reckon training with someone else will get me going better.
ultracynic 14-09-2007, 09:39 what is the percy pud???
Percy Pud is 10km race first weekend in December up Loxley and along Dam Flask then back again.
Always over subscribed and I didn't get in last time I tried so fingers crossed this time. I think the closing date is end September for entries.
Forms on Sheffield City Striders website - they are organisers.
NickDuggan 14-09-2007, 23:03 All our Sunday runs wil offer the opportunity to turn back at regular imntervals. The best way to improve is to run with others
I wouldnt mind going to be honest, but a bit early for me, anyone run later... about 12 ish
ultracynic 15-09-2007, 13:54 not sure why but i find running easier in the early evenings than in the early mornings
AngelAnnie 20-09-2007, 19:46 Do you have any plans to go out this Sunday morning? I'm new to this, but would like to join you this week.
Well if anyone is i could do very first thing sunday morning, about 11.30.
NickDuggan 09-10-2007, 22:35 Next Sunday 14th October 10 am 2 Runs from Grenoside Community Centre. One run at about 10 minute mile pace led by Dave and a run at about 8 minute mile pace led by Mick.Car parking available at the start.
Sunday morning..10 am.....Is it light at that time in the morning, i thought 11am was bad enough.
Any one running in the week, or at a better time...
NickDuggan 10-10-2007, 17:48 Try Don Valley 6pm on Tuesday or Thurday. Now its getting dark it much easier running with others . Three different groups on Tuesday, interval training for beginers on Thursdays.Meet at the far end of the indoor straight
NickDuggan 23-10-2007, 21:11 This Sunday 28th October 10.30am run from Hunters Bar maint entrance, approx 75 minutes at 9 to 10 minutes a mile, opportunities to do less.Organised by Sheffield Running Club non members welcome.

How far are the runs this sunday nick?
NickDuggan 14-11-2007, 19:03 Between 8 to 10 miles but if you wanted to do less then the leaders would arrange a point where you could turn around without getting lost.
Thanks. I think it would be good to join you and I might be ok doing 8 miles at 8min miles so may have to turn back. I'll try to meet up on Sunday.
NickDuggan 15-11-2007, 21:04 one of the two runs will stay in the Park so its very east to tailor this to the distance you want.Make sure that you meet at the Sports pavilion on the corner of Derbyshire Lane.

stwhiteley 28-11-2007, 15:38 do you get straggelers or do you all stick together?
stwhiteley 28-11-2007, 15:41 Sunday 2nd September we are training at Damflask, meeting at 10.30am by the wall on the approach to the dam.
a good run is from the bottom of loxley valley up the middle following the river to dam flask, touch the wall and then back along loxley rd back to where you start. About 10 miles.
NickDuggan 28-11-2007, 20:52 No one is ever left behind, if the group gets spread they will aleays stop and regroup. Sometimes the group may split into a faster and slower group.
sarah_glover 07-12-2007, 10:18 The run this Sunday is going to be from Hillsborough park heading out towards Oughtibridge. Meeting in the car park on the corner of Penistone and parkside roads at 10.30am.
How far/fast is the plan this week?
sarah_glover 07-12-2007, 10:43 The pace and time will depend on who turns up but it will probably be about 9 min miles and between 75 and 90 mins.

dlrichards 23-01-2008, 07:27 I'll be there, 27/01 10.30 at Dam Flask. I need to get the distance in me legs so I'll probably do the nine miles, but the shorter runs are a good distance for the beginners. It's a good run, I enjoyed it last time I was out with the club. See you Sunday Nick.
sarah_glover 23-01-2008, 09:28 Looking forward to the run on Sunday. There should be a good turnout with the Sheffield half marathon training getting into full swing!

sarah_glover 11-02-2008, 12:51 Excellent 9 mile run yesterday along the transpenine trail. Great to see so many people preparing for the Sheffield half and enjoying the lovely weather!
dlrichards 11-02-2008, 13:45 Half marathon training is so much easier in a group, does anyone know where next Sunday's run is from and what time? I'm really looking forward the run from Encliffe park on the 24th, if the turn out is anything like yesterday and last Tuesday evening it should be a good run.

Half marathon training has really kicked in now, another good show last night despite the cold. See you all at six, Don Valley for Thursdays session.
foofighter11 23-02-2008, 21:23 looking forward to sunday missed last week to do wombwell 5 had a good run thanks to training with this group

49er_Jerry 27-02-2008, 10:37 I hope to be back out again in a couple of weeks. The torn calf from the run on the 20th Jan has been desperately slow to heal. Missed competing in the Tough Guy event, but went down and marshalled instead.

NickDuggan 27-02-2008, 18:20 hope injury is improving . If its longstanding worth seeing a physio lots of good recommendations on the forum
dlrichards 28-02-2008, 14:29 I've upped my training, getting ready for the Sheffield half so I've managed to land myself with a couple of niggles. I've just had a couple of session at Hallamshire Physiotherapy, they've been really helpful. You should give them a go.
sarah_glover 29-02-2008, 10:24 Looking forward to this Sunday's run. If anyone wants to join us for a shorter run there's a 3 mile loop from Hillsborough, through Beeley woods and back via Middlewood Road which would be ideal.
dlrichards 29-02-2008, 10:27 Really good idea Sarah, there's a lot of poeple who are only just starting their Sheffield half marathon training, a 3 mile loop's a great starting distance.
sarahrbird 01-03-2008, 06:13 is this open for anyone to join in?
NickDuggan 01-03-2008, 13:39 Yes Sarah feel free to join us.
sarah_glover 03-03-2008, 11:43 Great 8 mile run yesterday though the woods. Nice to see another new face. Hope you enoyed the run Sarah and hopefully we'll be seeing you again soon.

sarahrbird 08-03-2008, 08:46 I'll be there again this week, really enjoyed last week's run!
This sounds good, i did the sheff half marathon last year and entered it again this year but my training partner is now a dad so has less time so i miss out because i have crap will power. Where will you be meeting this week? I need to get some long runs in ASAP!
NickDuggan 11-03-2008, 21:43 this weeks run Sunday 16th March from Hillsborough Park at the car park on the junction of Parkside Rd. Run starts at 10.30 am , particularly aimed at those who are training for the Sheffield half marathon, 9-10 minute miling, about an hour and a half.Really good turnouts, much easier to run with others come and try it or come down Tuesday at 6pm Don valley,we had 44 people this week so you won`t be lonely.
SteveWilson 13-03-2008, 23:00 injury permitting, i might join you fir my first "SF" run?
metaphoria 17-03-2008, 11:29 Would love to join everyone one the next run-I'm free at the weekend. However I'm usure of my current fitness level for running more than 5 miles, and think I've left it too late to train for the half-marathon. Would it be better to join the group when I am sure? Wouldn't want to lag behind and cause anyone else to slow down, or get lost somewhere alone in the Sheffield wilderness. :)
Any advice welcome.:)
matty_nick 17-03-2008, 13:24 Hey
Anyone know of any groups that go for distance runs of around 7:30-8:00 min pace?
Rdgs
Matt
NickDuggan 17-03-2008, 17:23 Matt if you can get down to Don Valley at 6pm on a Tuesday we have a group that is running at that pace for 9 - 10 miles. We meet at the end of the indoor straight . Ask for me.
NickDuggan 17-03-2008, 17:25 Metaphoria if you can get down Tuesday nights at 6pm we have a run that you could join. meet at the end of the indoor straight Don Valley.
Where do you go when you start from hunters bar? I live near there and go past there and up ecclesal road south upto dore and whirlow then turn round at the hsbc sports place back to where i live near hallamshire hospital
NickDuggan 17-03-2008, 21:05 Run to humters bar then run straight up through the parks to the very top at Ringinglow.Turn right and take the footpath 50yds further on (on your lrft)and this takes you round to the Burbage Rd. Go straight over the road and run to the end of the plantation and turn back on the track that brings you back to Ringinglow.either you can continue back on Ringinglow Rd or turn right down Limb Valley to Ecclesall Rd South.
Alternatively stay on the Rd at the top of the porter valley, turn right, run over to Redmires dam, either back on Sandygaye Rd or go down Wyming brook and return via Manchester Rd
metaphoria 17-03-2008, 23:25 NickDuggan...thanks. Tuesdays are a possibility (actually that's tommorow). I'll see what I can do. Is this every Tuesday? Not sure about tomorrow (work), but please could you give me rough directions?
Thanks again.:)
metaphoria 17-03-2008, 23:30 Indoor straight Don Valley. Actually, I've found directions on another thread, and I think I could find it. Hope there's a car-park nearby, and I dont get stuck around a one-way street system.

foofighter11 24-03-2008, 19:37 Why do you say that not everybody who runs with the club are skiny speed murchants :wow: the suport these guys give great
metaphoria 25-03-2008, 09:59 Foofighter...see post #100. It's covering the distance that worries me. I'll be doing a few runs on my own in the meantime. Problem is-I never know how far I've run, or how fast-so I've no idea if I'm up to keeping up with you. :)
