View Full Version : Best hip hop albums (non-Gangsta!) barnsleybroker 11-08-2007, 21:10 What do people think are the best hip hop albums - funkiest phattest beats, best scratching, best rhyming - without a "bitch", "ho'" or "nigga" in earshot? muddycoffee 11-08-2007, 22:27 The greatest hip hop album of all time is one I was given as a child. It is called peter and the wolf. It is really kicking and hardcore. Made me really appreciate music like I had never had before and still affects everything I do. discodown 12-08-2007, 09:26 Early De La Soul, Kid n Play basically the early stuff Beakerzoid 12-08-2007, 10:51 Early Run DMC knocks the socks off all else. melthebell 12-08-2007, 13:20 all run dmc de la soul - 3 feet and rising all krs1 albums all rakim albums disposable heroes of hiphopracy / spearhead (michael franti) all the early electro stuff, grandmaster flash, afrika bambaata etc i also love the newer indie stuff like the anticon label. clouded, dr syntax, and a lot of the newer british stuff. it depends what you mean by gangster really 2 of my fave albums ever are british but still hardcaore but not in the same way as say nwa etc hijack - horns of jericho skinnyman - council estate of mind (awesome album features most of the dialogue from the clasic british film made in britain in it) plekhanov 12-08-2007, 17:27 Aside from those already mentioned such as De La Soul, Eric B. & Rakim... Blackalicious - Blazing Arrow Digable Planets - Reachin' (A New Refutation Of Time And Space) DangerDoom - The Mouse And The Mask Jurassic 5 - Jurassic 5 LP IAM - De La Planete Mars Disiz La Peste - Jeu De Société NTM - Authentik Mc Solaar - Qui sème le vent récolte le tempo Saïan Supa Crew - KLR Kthebean 12-08-2007, 17:45 Cant beat tribe called quest for old school fun and japes hip hop psyn 12-08-2007, 18:06 not the best but worthy of a mention, das efx, also not gangsta but still has ******, in great quantities in fact, the goats, no goats no glory, -bizzare ride to the pharcyde- both quality Earlmeerkat 12-08-2007, 18:30 public enemy = broke all the rules and gave birth to the modern style, hugely philosophical and hugely influential, especially; It takes a nation of millions to hold us back Fear of the black planet for a more chilled flavour; A tribe called quest and for comedy you can't beat slim shady, the alter ego of the one and only; Eminem EdnaKrabappe 12-08-2007, 21:05 Three feet high and rising for moi. NEKRO138 13-08-2007, 08:31 Common - Like Water for Chocolate Tony 13-08-2007, 08:58 De La... 3 feet high It provided the foundations to so much more, but I'd like to give a special mention to The Adventures of Grandmaster Flash. alchresearch 13-08-2007, 09:04 Hate to repeat what everyone else has said but DMC, De La Soul and Grandmaster Flash for me too. carcrash 13-08-2007, 13:09 PM Dawn, Of the heart, Of the soul and of the cross:- The Utopian Experience is crap, I know this because the person I was shagging at the time loved the album and it was " our" album. There was an Utopian Experience but as it is a family oriented forum I cannot say much more NEKRO138 13-08-2007, 13:31 I also love both Pharoae Monch albums. He does talk about guns in one or two tracks, but he could never be referred to as gangsta rap. In fact, his new album has a really good anti-gun song. venger 13-08-2007, 13:35 Ugly Duckling not had a mention yet :) carcrash 13-08-2007, 14:29 I know there is a place for all this fluffy stuff but you know what would you rather have this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DJ0_HYuR_fk or http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=otL6FvpALQg FlowerdUp89 13-08-2007, 14:51 Jesus, where do I start!? I got into old school Hip-Hop about 10 Years ago now, when I was at the tender age of 8! My personal favourits are: AIM - Cold Water music. Amazing album, well put together, chilling, bouncy, funky, well wrote and produced Jurassic 5 - All albums are great especially their most recent one "Feedback" De La Soul - These are a proper Hip-Hop group we all love Biggie - He's an unsung hero IMO Public Enemy - Because their Public Enemy! N.W.A - I know there a lot of N-bombs in there and a lot of "Bitches" and "Ho's" but still, they are/were a great group I like all hip-hop, but there my most listened to artists of all time EdnaKrabappe 13-08-2007, 15:11 To upset the purists out there, I also love T.L.C.'s Crazysexycool as well. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Av7m_Pgt1S8 although i  this version http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qqwkdDZdruQ And when i was a wee nipper this little number http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ozrWdZaXkzk my mate had a whole C90 tape of this! I think you're barking up the wrong thread here love - we're talking about decent hip hop. Not, as could be argued, the most morally reprehensible pop tat in history Preacher Man 13-08-2007, 15:34 I also love both Pharoae Monch albums. He does talk about guns in one or two tracks, but he could never be referred to as gangsta rap. In fact, his new album has a really good anti-gun song. im a new convert and you have to love him! i would have to add something from the pharcyde, klashs' focus mode and wake the neigbours by sheffields own ccr isnt bad :D Preacher Man 13-08-2007, 15:37 and im going to go against popular opinion and say i prefer aoi: mosaic thump over 3 feet high! NEKRO138 13-08-2007, 16:55 im a new convert and you have to love him! i would have to add something from the pharcyde, klashs' focus mode and wake the neigbours by sheffields own ccr isnt bad :D I liked him for a while now. I got the Internal Affairs cd, and just after the people who did the music for Godzlla heard Simon Says, ad made him take the sample off. He had to re-release the album without the song. And after Rawkus went bust (which is a proper shame) it was deleted completely. I saw a copy on Ebay for £40 recently. Do you have that or do you just have the new one? The new one is absolutely fantastic. Preacher Man 14-08-2007, 12:18 its the new one i have, theres some sick beats on it and its got a pretty funky vibe! been sticking it on every night when i get in from work.. my mate might have the first one, but if you do have a copy *cough* hi *cough* NEKRO138 14-08-2007, 12:27 its the new one i have, theres some sick beats on it and its got a pretty funky vibe! been sticking it on every night when i get in from work.. my mate might have the first one, but if you do have a copy *cough* hi *cough* I'll see what I can do! FlowerdUp89 14-08-2007, 12:35 What about - Jedi Mind Tricks and Lords Of The Underground? Anyone listen to them aswell? You must do... johnb42 14-08-2007, 21:40 anything by mantronix, bdp, jungle brothers, epmd, eric b & rakim, also liked cash money & marvelous:- where's the party at? Ginner 14-08-2007, 22:06 Old Skool rules :P BDP's Criminal Minded started my love of Rap. Subsequent BDP efforts generally hit the mark, (in fact By All Means Necessary was probably better). The Sindecut - Changing The Scenery, was a cool 1990 UK album. Shame Hijack never kicked on after the excellent Horns Of Jericho... think Ice T led them astray :suspect: Public Enemy - Yo! BRTS still gets played in my car. Gang Starr - Step in the Arena There's loads of cool tracks that, IMO, weren't backed up by great (or even good) albums: JVC Force - Strong Island EPMD - I Shot The Sheriff Big Daddy Kane - The Wrath of Kane Black Radical Mk II - Monsoon, Rippin Up The Industry MC Duke - I'm Riffin' Bugger.. time to get the cassette player out again..... Squiggly 15-08-2007, 10:38 anything by mantronix, bdp, jungle brothers, epmd, eric b & rakim, also liked cash money & marvelous:- where's the party at? Mantronix - what a blast from the past! Got the album on vinyl somewhere..... Never a fan of eric B though! De La Soul were fab, saw them at the Octagon early 90s and again at Glastonbury a few years ago. Tribe Called Quest were one of my early faves, along with NWA and Public Enemy. And what about this one...... sounds a bit cheesy now but guaranteed to get me dancing.....http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=o2pu6jAWvw8:hihi: Squiggly 15-08-2007, 10:48 Re-reading the posts ..... 'The Wrath of Kane' another classic..... off now to dig out the old vinyls...anyone got a turntable to spare???!!! FlowerdUp89 15-08-2007, 11:37 I know it isn't direct to the topic, but anyone still listen to the Beasty Boys? I found a CD last night I had made of all there best tunes and it's ruddy awsome! You can probably get a feel for their music going by the name of their album - Stoners Delight, lol I was going to mention the Beasties but didn't know if it was what this thead was looking for. They were freakin' awesome, I suppose they still are. Paul's Boutique is a classic and always makes me smile as does Licence To Ill. Plus, as a metal fan, the fact that Kerry King of Slayer plays lead on No Sleep 'Til Brooklyn is cool. shakermaker 17-08-2007, 10:40 i do like the beastie boys, but i can never listen to them for long because their voices are just so irritating!
