For me it was good fun Good coffee and a Jukebox Oh yes it was.....it was Thursday afternoon when we went on March 20th...I know it was Thursday cos we worked at C&A's and it was half day closing....so our Thursday afternoon jaunts were like going out of a night time.....and such fun:hihi: RiffRaff 11-08-2007, 21:56 The Favorita (sp?) on Carver Street was a good 'un for meeting pals, and there was a downstairs one on Chapel Walk as well...can't remember what it was called. Aries22 12-08-2007, 10:04 I remember the one on Chapel Walk but do not remember the name. Its hard to think about Coffee Bars with all the binge drinking going on. I think there was one in London called the 2ii it was where a lot of the pop stars first performed. handypandy 12-08-2007, 10:08 I seem to remember visiting one in Crookes called the 'Harlequin' It was decorated outside with the multi coloured harlequin squares. Happy memories of the Sidewalk, used to go in on a Saturday, after a couple of drinks in the Stone House, the on to Cockaynes for afternoon tea! Local groups were often in the Sidewalk, even after Dave Berry had his first top ten hit, it was ususal to see him in there that nobody hassled him. I think the downstairs room was called the'Egyption Room', not so sure about that. echo beach 06-04-2009, 09:32 Yes, I've not been in Sheffield for many years now but I do remember the Roman Room and La Favourita. My brother and his pals from central tech used to go at lunch time, probably far enough away from school to not get caught smoking. I remember the strong smell of coffee as you walked upstairs. My brother and his pals from central tech used to go at lunch time, probably far enough away from school to not get caught smoking. I remember the strong smell of coffee as you walked upstairs. Oh so sophisticated. It was called the concourse. It started off as a quite well, even sophisticated as you say, but eventually, because of the behavior of the people who used to hang around the town centre, became a source of great aggravation to the cinema manager (Les Allen ) To his delight it became ABC 2, in the last years of the cinemas life. phantom309 07-04-2009, 13:46 Hi there was a coffee bar across from Hillsborough park called the squirrel I think and Dave Layne the footballer owned it in the early 60s it was usually busy as one or two other players would pop in from time to time. It was opposite Cockaynes/Redgates and near the old 'Hole in the road' and they did a mean milky coffee and had a great pin ball machine. We wagged it from school and had many happy hours there drinking coffee and racking up replays! This would have been 1967/68/69 btw so late sixties. A bit 'after the fire' of the initial impact of coffee bars on kids. I think they may have had a juke box but we were into pinball! carosio 08-04-2009, 12:36 There was the " Take Five" on South Road, Walkley, popular with bikers in the mid to late 1960s. Nimrod 08-04-2009, 16:51 Used to go to 'Take Five' on South Rd and The Harlequin at Crookes, both bikers cafes. Bikes were my world in those days [ rose coloured glasses on way out of glasses case]. It was definitely called "The Sidewalk Cafe" in the 60s, run by Harry Hart. It was the place to be and be seen at that time. Dave Berry used to pop in there. Their sandwiches and "frothy" coffe were delicious. Linnet 01-03-2010, 15:21 Who remembers The Ocelot just off the top end of Bramall Lane before the one way system goes down to London Road. rogG 01-03-2010, 23:29 What was the name of the coffee bar on Norfolk St (I think it was there) in the late 50s/60s? It was one of the first in the city. The real action happened in two rooms downstairs, where the shadier elements of society used to gather. Flick knives, knuckle duters, the lot. I saw a fight break out there one night. Hardly ever saw anyone drinking coffee down there. It was just a hangout. phantom309 02-03-2010, 14:29 Hi Rog are you thinking of the "El Mambo" which I am sure was on Union Street but the grey matter is slightly addled now. rogG 02-03-2010, 17:44 Hi Rog are you thinking of the "El Mambo" which I am sure was on Union Street but the grey matter is slightly addled now. I don't know. I may have got the streets mixed up. What I do remember is that the upstairs was a proper coffee bar where during the daytime regular folk would sit around munching danish pastries and slurping perked coffee, something new in those days. Downstairs was a fire trap and a dive, frequented by thugs and guys like me who wanted to see how the other half lived. OK I went there a few times. :) Elmambo 02-03-2010, 20:26 The El Mambo was indeed situated on Union Street, between the old Empire stage door and the Cambridge Arcade - almost opposite the Palace Union Street cinema. The upstairs was a normal coffeee bar, but for the princely sum of ninepence, you were given a ticket (exchangeable for a drink) and allowed to descend the back stairs. There were two cellar rooms, one dark and one bright, decorated as Heaven and Hell. Themed, I believe, after a famous London coffee bar ( 2ii's ?). Later on a third room was added. It had indeed a certain reputation and the odd dubious character, but that of course was the attraction. Most people were just teenagers having a laugh or meeting-up. Best memory. When the Most Brothers were appearing at the Empire, Micky Most came down with his guitar and gave us all a performance - I've always admired him for that. Oh for my misspent youth ! rogG 02-03-2010, 20:39 [QUOTE=Elmambo;5980834]The El Mambo was indeed situated on Union Street, between the old Empire stage door and the Cambridge Arcade - almost opposite the Palace Union Street cinema. Yes, it must have been the El Mambo I was thinking of because it was near the old Empire theatre, on the opposite side of the street from it though as I remember. I remember going into that rat hole of a basement one night and seeing a guy reach right across a table and biff someone in the face because he thought he was looking ascance at the friend he was sat with. His friend was black and integration in the early 60s was at a very rudimentary stage. JACK HEWITT 09-11-2010, 17:13 Wrong again rogG the EL MAMBO was on the same side as the Empire theater UNION st opposite the old police box which was next to the Union st cinema it was at the bottom of the Cambridge arcade which was locally known as SUGGS arcade also in the arcade was Barney Goodmans tailors and at one time later on Johnny Fanthams hairdressers ELMAMBO do you remember the occasion when a biker tied and dragged a cat up and down Union st after leaving the Mambo another reason why it got such a bad reputation. Also one just slightly up London rd below Hill st called the Continental now a Italian restaurant . Lostinfrance 09-11-2010, 17:32 I had a Saturday job waitressing at a cafe around the corner from Lift Up Your Skirts and Fly. It was called La Dolce Vita but everyone knew it as Fred's cafe. Got paid a fiver for working from 8 in the morning til 7 at night - plus free dinner (if there was anything left - usually chips and soup) and split the tips with the other waitress. Good juke box. One play a tanner and three plays for a bob. Hazelmay 09-11-2010, 17:38 The Favorita (sp?) on Carver Street was a good 'un for meeting pals, and there was a downstairs one on Chapel Walk as well...can't remember what it was called. We used to go to La Favorita on Saturday nights after the dance at the Student's Union. It seemed the only place open after 11.00 p.m. Their Chicken Risotto was terrific. It was my introduction to Italian food, hard to believe, now that we are all eating foods from all over the world on a regular basis. I never had pizza until we came to Canada in 1974. The Sidewalk was another favorite meeting place. You seem to be cropping up in a lot of my old areas. I wonder if we ever met. The Continental used to be owned by a German woman in the early sixties. I was engaged to her son for a time. Big mistake. He chased me with a gun and we finished up in the papers. (Daily Mirror) I think it was. My ex husband and me used to go in the Disc Jockey, owned by Bill and Maisie. I was also friends with their daughter Hilary. rogG 25-11-2010, 19:26 The Sidewalk was a Cafe not a bar went to it on opening day and certainly wasnt gay,did a great chicken sandwich, I left Sheffield 63 so dont know what happened since i also used the El Mambo when it first opened revolutionary for the time, when i left to go to London went to the 2iis coffee bar.:) Upstairs functioned as a snack bar/ cafe. Downstairs, the Egyptian room was mainly filled with teenagers drinking coffee, smoking, mostly looking around to see who was available for picking up. Especially on Saturday mornings. So I heard. :hihi: Hetty 26-11-2010, 15:03 ......happy days in the Sidewalk!! Heidi Boo 03-12-2010, 23:50 Well I think over the years we have all established: El Mambo - Union Street - not for the faint hearted, the religious guy with the placard used to come and remonstrate outside that everyone must Repent. Sidewalk- was on Chapel Walk upstairs had the long mirror down the right hand side leading down to the dark and mysterious Egyptian Room Roman Room - near the Museum pub as was - now Orchard Square Marsdens - first Wimpey Bar - Just below Walshes as was (T J Hughes) Ocelot - Alderson Road - best burgers in town at 3 am in the morning La Favorita - between West Street and Division Street Favourite pubs in the 60's in town??? - Mulberry Tavern, Blue Bell, Stone House, Athol, Travellers, Barleycorn, Raven. What was the one on the corner opposite the City Hall...anyone? Did you know Hondababy? 1960s mikeG 05-12-2010, 16:42 I remember the Athol. A Youngers house I think. It was a really great little cafe' that was situtated at the bottom of Millthorpe Lane (now converted into two bungalows). Ideal for people that had been walking round the local countryside. The place had a classic 1960's interior with the brightly coloured tables and 1960's style lampshades that made it look and feel like a seaside ice cream parlour. The food was wholesome and they served gorgeous kickerbocker glorys and milky coffees - from a big shiny metal machine back of the counter - all pipes n steam. bullerboY 16-04-2011, 16:53 I know it's just over the border, but I remember "Bobbies Cafe'", Millthorpe.
