View Full Version : Limping hamster
littleblue 10-08-2007, 22:29 He will be taken to the vet first thing tomorrow, but there isn't a lot I can do right now.
Just noticed that my hammy is limping and holding up his left paw. He will let me touch him and hold him and he's scampering about on three paws.
Have taken out everything he can climb on/run in/jump over until the morning. Is there anything else I can do??
terminator 10-08-2007, 22:45 think you have done best you can by keeping him to the basics smaller cage if at all possible
keep him warm
littleblue 10-08-2007, 22:57 I can put him in a slightly smaller glass tank if that would help (it would be vented so he can breathe!)
He's got fluff and a house but has chucked a lot of it out as its quite hot at the moment. I'll pop a bit more in so he can move it about if he feels like it.
Is he likely to recover? I am fond of the little fur ball.

Its a bit like when any of my birds are poorly they go into a hospital cage somtimes with pearches somtimes not the cages are only about 12" x 4" depending on bird size that is it restrics them to rest up.So yes if you got a smaller tank just pop hime in there as long as he aint going to get stressed out moving him.If hes settled id leave him alone untill you can get to the vet.It really depends what he,s done to the leg maybe just twisted it sprained it fingers crossed for you might even be ok in morning one never knows.
littleblue 10-08-2007, 23:20 He's in his house now and I can hear him foraging for hidden treasure. There is very little that can hurt him in his cage (bar some freak accident with his house or food bowl!) so he should be settled for the night.
Thanks for your advice! I'll post how I get on in the morning.

good luck with him
shihtzumad 10-08-2007, 23:48 hope your hammy is ok in the morning, after some rest he might be fine, we have just bought a tiny hamster for my girls :)
Lspacehopper 11-08-2007, 04:54 Hi, I wouldn't be inclined to move your hamster in to a smaller cage/tank. Small animals don't react well to sudden changes in environment and hamsters are prone to stress. See what your vet says, but hamsters cope surprisingly well if they have to amble about with 3 legs.
Good luck at the vets :)
littleblue 11-08-2007, 09:26 I rang the vets to see if I should take him in and they said give it the weekend and come in Tues/Wed if he doesn't improve or stops eating.
Considering he's nearly emptied his food bowl and his food store isn't huge (hah Pidge, you thought you'd hidden it didn't you?? Oh no, I check on it to make sure you're eating it all and not leaving the black bits!) and the water bottle has gone down I would say he's still eating and drinking!
He's also worked out that if he doesn't put any weight on it he can run about on three legs just has fast as four (and even climbed the sides of the cage!)
My OH saw him this morning and was allowed a quick stroke (this hamster isn't a touchy feely sort of bloke - he will sit and let you ¨talk¨ to him but he isn't fond of petting) and he's hobbling but isn't trying to bite so the pain can't be that bad.
Thanks for the advice. I was a bit worried because I love that little furry so much -he's quite a character!
terminator 11-08-2007, 13:01 just keep an eye on him that the leg dosnt become swollen sounds like he,s happy enough .Glad hes ok
God vets dohhhhhhhh
littleblue 11-08-2007, 13:38 I was quite pleased that they spoke over the phone rather than making me box him up and then charging £40 for the priviledge!
I want him to get better quickly because I'm half way through building him an adventure playground!

lol im sure he will and yeah theres that about it i guess they do know how to charge.
I had a hamster years ago who broke a leg. We took him to the vets and although they confirmed he had broken his leg there was no real treatment - just keep an eye on it to make sure it isn't swollen/hot/red (signs of infection which would need treatment quick smart) or any lumps which might indicate it could be something other than an injury and he should be absolutely fine. Perhaps take anything that he reguarly climbs on out of the cage for a week or two to stop him climbing and jumping off and making it any worse (although this is probably impossible if he's in a wire cage that he climbs anyway).
littleblue 14-08-2007, 22:18 No limping anymore at this end! (atleast not the hammy!)
He's irritated and grumpy and his sharp end is a bit quick to get to human flesh - but as soon as he got his wheel back he was as happy as larry and tame again.
Silly little mite, whatever it was he did. I can't get over how well he recovered! I popped him in his pen yesterday to watch him run and soon realised he was fine when he scratched his face with the poorly leg, then shoved it in his mouth, then did some fairy impressive hammy acrobatics.
Panic over :D
