View Full Version : Sales in Town
Yes, I know it's Christmas Day and an odd time to be online, but I thought I'd posts this now and give everyone some time to reply :-)
Does anyone know if all the shops in town will be open Monday/Tuesday for the sales or not because of the bank holidays?
We always go down first shopping day after Christmas and get some bargains but because of the bank holidays this yearwe don't know which day everything will be open.
Thanks and Merry Christmas
I think the likes of Meadowhall will be open on Bank Holiday Monday and Tuesday.
They're open tomorrow for the sales I know that :loopy:
IMO they should make it illegal for shops to open till at least a week after Christmas so that shop workers get a decent holiday.
Makro have a big sale tomorrow if you have a card.

Yeah that would be good for business wouldn't it
Most places will start their sales tomorrow, no doubt that the majority of staff will be happy to coin it in.. Not everyone gets holiday pay :?
I shall stick mostly to the online sales

90% of people have a Makro card, that supposedly trade only joint is a joke.
You might as well shop at Meadohell it's cheaper.

Exactly, nobody without a car is going to be able to get to the shops so why bother opening? IMO starting the sales on Boxing day is daft, especially this year when it falls on a Sunday.
I normally do as much as I can online but I do like a look round the shops early morning in town after Christmas - get there for just as the shops open and you can get round before most people arrive to pack it out.
I figured Meadowhall would be open but I have no desire to brave the Meadowhall crowds in the sales!
So is that a yes town is open on Monday or a we don't know?
Cheers
i work in retail and the only time we're closed this time of year was today! i would love to have more time off for family time but i suppose i went into the job knowing full well i wouldn't get much time off as these days everything just HAS to stay open:rolleyes: i have the weekends off anyway so my only time off is monday but well, thats life really.
i know meadowhall is open as it was reported in the star recently that the directors or whoever the powers that be are there, are demanding they open during the bank holiday as meadowhall comes as a package sort of thing. you go to meadowhall for ALL the shops therefore they are saying it must open as a complete package or the shop owners will be fined for not keeping to their contracts:rolleyes:
there are slaes galore already started on time. Pick a big company (Argos, m&S, Curry's, Index etc) they have all started
I work in retail and boxing day is one of the biggest turnover days of the year.
This year it is not a bank holiday as it is on a sunday monday and tuesday are bank holidays.
Because of this many staff who work it do not get a premium rate.
In my experience even when staff do get a premium rate on boxing day given a choice they would rather be with there family, however most still work it.
Also be aware that due to sunday trading many storres will be open either 10-4 or 11-5.

most of the shops that open bank holidays are the big ones that employ a lot of students,
they in most cases get double time/time and a half!!
no student would want to pass this up, so it is good for them
our place pays double time for the bank holidays which are this monday and tuesday and the following monday after new years weekend. we also get days in leiu which we can take off as holiday time when we like so i really can't complain.
lots of workplaces have different terms i'm sure but although many shops are open i suppose the terms regarding staff have to be fair.

That's all very well but at least shop workers can chose to take their holiday whenever they like! They chose to work in a shop, just as a nurse choses to work in hospital, but they don't close the hospital for a week just because it's Christmas!
I worked Christmas Eve to New Years Day (except Christmas Day) every year for 6 years, last Christmas was my first one off, but actually I didn't want to take my enforced holiday , I wanted to work so I could go on holiday in January!

I think you will find that in retail, staff are not allowed any holiday time off in december

Sorry to double post, but I thought I may get more replies in here than I did in the general board.

Some of town was open today... Atkinson, Debenhams etc have all advertised that they will be starting their sales on 27th Dec
Go Nuts :D
roughy101 26-12-2004, 20:40 ive been to meadowhall today, picked up loads of bargains, only to put them down again when i saw the queues. i left my daughter in ubs to buy a jacket and went all around meadowhall. it took her 50mins to get served, never again.
franc1987 26-12-2004, 21:26 hey does anyone know what time meadowhall opens tomorrow
monday 27th my bro says normal hours but its a bank holiday isnt it and the website dont say
cheers
franc1987 26-12-2004, 22:41 also does anyone know if the halifax will be open. not the machines but the actual cashiers. thanks
they bother opening because people with cars have money to spend. Generalisation I know, but these things work on averages. The average disposable income of people with personal transport is on average (I think) higher than that of people without personal transport.
Don't bother with anecdotal evidence to prove me wrong, i'm not talking about you specifically (if you were about to write that you ahve no car and are in fact a millionaire or whatever).

Actually I worked in retail for several years and found that although my employer didn't like people taking hoiday over busy times, there was nothing to stop them.

Fair point, and is exactly what I mean! Why should shop workers get a week off at christmas when people performing life saving operations don't?
I'm not saying shop workers don't deserve a holiday and I think it is apalling that some employers do not let staff take time off over Chrismas and New Year, but shopworkers chose to work there, they know their conditions of employment.

having worked in retail for almost 20 years and in the last 7 years having worked for 3 supermarket chains, none of them have allowed you to have any holidays in december, and one of them wounldnt allow holidays in november december and january

Because we can live with the shops being closed so when Xmas comes round it seems like a decent time to have a week off or so. Of course there's always someone who wants to go out shopping at the most inconvenient time possible to anyone else...... :)

Highly unlikely, they don't call it Bank Holiday Monday for nothing you know.

Actually the Halifax opens bank holidays in Meadowhall! I used to work there!
The ones in Sheffield are also open tomorrow 10-3

They indirectly save the lives of parents all the time, it's always some little Timmy's birthday somewhere and they always want THE latest toys, and in this City there's almost no dedicated toy shops other than Toys R Us, gone are the days of Redgate's and Hamley's down the Moor.
