I think there is a bit of a campaign to work on the petrol giants and get their local stations to go out of business. I know that esso's american parent company has a bit of a shady record enviromentally, and of course they came to blows with greenpeace with the brent spar oil platform. It has been cheaper to buy petrol from supermarket petrol stations for years, and I can only imagine that that has been the final nail in the coffin for some of these last few petrol stations. The Station on Bramhall lane seems to remain busy, as it is open 24hours. But if you go at night you have to pay before you fill. and they had an armed robbery not long ago, wasn't somebody shot and killed? It can't be pleasent working with this kind of threat, the petrol stations in Manchester all seem to have elaborate bullet proof screens like a bank, again this can only add to the expense of running such a place. Plain Talker 28-12-2004, 10:09 Muddycoffee, I think that the "don't buy Esso" was to do with the boycott of esso products in response to their apalling record of contravening human rights, and of things like land-theft etc in Nigeria. Didn't they pollute lots of poor people's land and not clean it up as well? I know that coca cola did this, polluted lots of drinking water in india, and poisoned the local population. bobsyouruncle 28-12-2004, 16:45 i used to work at the petrol station on bramall lane uptill last new year, when i left, it wasnt an armed robbery, but someone did get killed on the forecourt tho threecolours 28-12-2004, 17:03 Originally posted by muddycoffee A couple of years ago a student girl gave me a don't buy esso sticker. I think there is a bit of a campaign to work on the petrol giants and get their local stations to go out of business. Loads more info here about what esso get up to, how they supported Bush to get re-elected and any local campaigns. Problem with this though is that I reckon all the oil companies get up to similar things... http://www.stopesso.com/ spiffymonkey 28-12-2004, 22:49 The few who are still about like taking liberties too. The BP garage on Herries Road/Moonshine Lane upped prices to 87.9p/litre on Christmas Day/Boxing Day (and I think bank holiday monday) just to catch people who hadn't filled up before. Thing is, some of the queues the day before meant that it was more luck than judgement anyway! I do quite like the Esso up near Netherthorpe and down at Halifax Road. Well kept and cheap too. Not sure about this 'don't buy Esso' malarkey... never really seen any information about it apart from people with clipboards who I ignore as a matter of course. |
