Who's your ISP? And are you trying to use Hotmail in Outlook or Outlook Express? Hotmail doesn't work very well in POP3 based email clients.

Mine has been the same for the past 4 days. I tried everything to sort it, but nothing worked. Today I started using Opera as my web browser and ditched Internet Explorer. Since I changed I haven't had a problem with Hotmail.

It's entirely possible that the server system was suffering from any number of issues from upgrades to Denial of service attacks... So, it's unlikely that switching from one browser to another will do much good.

Usually it's good practice though to try flushing (emptying) your internet file cache and cookies and see if that corrects the problem... A little google searching to see if anyone else is reporting a problem with the service might help too... Like MSN messenger there's usually someone asking if anyone else is having problems.

As for Gmail, that's working pretty well all told but I've noticed the odd blip too... and it's worth bearing in mind the privacy policy and what will be done with your emails in terms of processing...

What the privacy policy regarding Google mate?

I think I heard something about they keep a record of all of your emails or something along those lines?

Your emails are scanned and indexed... you'd be advised to check up on the whole gmail concept as it can, for some conspiracy and privacy theorists, be a little worrying.

To be honest, I would doubt it...

Given that google have the technological systems to do it and their whole rational is based around search, retrieval and accurate information delivery it's a given almost that google would want to do this sort of thing... and with all the conspiracy types about, a clear, honest declaration is a breath of fresh air.

Hotmail on the other hand are probably looking at it but as they're babes in the wood and more about jack of all trades it's more likely to be a "wouldn't it be nice if..." type affair...

Who knows...

To clarify here, as my understand has it, Hotmail only allows POP3 access (i.e. via email clients like Outlook) for its paid customers now. However, it still allows HTTP access via email clients (warning - very slow!), hence the confusion here. Sending/receiving in Outlook over the HTTP mail server can be done by setting up a new account in Outlook (Tools, Account, Mail, New) and as soon as you enter the email address as being @hotmail.com the rest sorts itself out, and you too can send/receive with HTTP in slow motion!
