View Full Version : Anyone remember the Gatefield club miffa 09-08-2007, 17:21 I would be interested to know if its still there,i went on my first proper date there, long long ago lol. lakerman 09-08-2007, 17:50 I don't think it's there anymore. The building may be there but I think the club closed long ago. I remember going there a few times in the 1960's and 1970's. In fact I played my first ever competetive billiards game there in the early 1970's. I was very nervous and I had loads of luck on the night and won quite easily. How times change, there is no longer any competetive billiards played in Sheffield anymore. Sad to say that the billiards league folded years ago. Leipzig 09-08-2007, 20:56 I was a member 1971-76 - became a member of that particular club as my grandad was a member there. Still got the member's card - can I still get in????? - lol. http://i183.photobucket.com/albums/x118/LeipzigLeipzig/GatefieldSC.jpg Leipzig miffa 09-08-2007, 21:53 is ur name steven?? My grandparents on my mother's side used to go there and in the summer holidays we'd sometimes call in and see them. I recall the dartboard, vinyl chequered flooring, round tables and wooden chairs and flourescent lighting. The place closed some years since but I don't know what - if anything - has become of the building. My grandparents also frequented the Byron and (now also no longer) Brincliffe Oaks. Good times, indeed. mark1971 18-01-2008, 04:57 I think my father used to go to gatefield social club wat back in the 60's early 70's,i was born in 1971 (though you wouldn't know from my avater):hihi: & we lived at 28 gatefield rd but left around 74/75,our next door neighbor (my late dads best friend is called arthur). caitsmum 18-01-2008, 08:59 The Gatefield closed down about 3 years ago it was bought by some building company who were going to knock it down and build flats even though part of it was listed. They did knock it down and start building but dont think any work has been done for a while. beanpod 18-01-2008, 11:44 My dad used to go there all the time. It's sad to think it's not there anymore. buck 18-01-2008, 15:48 My Mom and Dad, my brother and I were all members back in the late 40s and thru the fifties, until the family moved to Cornwall. My aunt lived on Gatefield Road, and us on the next street over, Glen Road. It was a very active club in those days with "turns" every Saturday night. Rocklegend 18-01-2008, 18:24 Played football for them aged 16 but not for long before I was bought by a bigger club:hihi::hihi::hihi:That was in the 70's.Also played darts in the mid 80's tho' that was against them.Their captain was a really old guy who ,when asked if he had named his 5 players for the '1001' replied ''yes,we've got ham, cheese & black pudding on''...:help: muddycoffee 18-01-2008, 18:42 The Gatefield closed down about 3 years ago it was bought by some building company who were going to knock it down and build flats even though part of it was listed. They did knock it down and start building but dont think any work has been done for a while. I remember taking a passing interest in the scheme. There was a disagreement between the developers and the city planners. I think what happend was that the city planners were concerned that there would be enough parking for the residents, but the developers kept trying to reapply with a few less parking spaces to fit extra dwellings on. It sounds like they never sorted it. The entrance onto Abbeydale Road is snided with Japanese Knotweed, and a large mature tree was blown down a couple of years ago, you can still see the damage to the fencing from where it fell. teebee 18-01-2008, 20:48 remember the gatefield very well, can anybody remember any of the comittee men, one of them was my dad. or any off the bar staff, one of them was my mum. PeterRM 19-01-2008, 12:33 My father was a member of the Gatefield .I remember the club as a youngster when they used to have black pudding sandwiches upstairs in the snooker room.In the main room the Warburtons sat in the same seats every time and when the TOMBOLA was on as a child you had better be quiet.Nibbits and orangillo were the order of the day. What was a bonus every year you could go on the club trip with your mates to Mablethorpe be fed and given spending money 4 half crowns to squander.Fantastic Longcol 19-01-2008, 13:29 Used to use it occassionaly in the late 70's. Remember some of the locals always used to bet on a horse called "Father Delany" - which invariably lost. gennki 06-01-2009, 16:30 My Grandfather spent lots of his time there. His name was 'Tosh' for all those who remember him ? We lived on Gatefield road. Rocklegend 06-01-2009, 18:57 My Grandfather spent lots of his time there. I used to go in underage, but the cops never bothered me cos I was in Navy uniform, my mates would get summoned for it but not me. I used to remember the Sally Army ladies coming in selling War Crys. They were OK though, they had a sense of humour. I lived on Glen Road. Rocklegend 06-01-2009, 20:33 He must have been a bit of a lad to get chucked out of the Broadfield.
