View Full Version : Malta, has anyone been. PaulTansley 24-12-2004, 14:01 I am thinking of going to Malta in May and would like to hear from anyone who has been there and any views that they have about the island. Internetowl 24-12-2004, 14:54 where abouts you going - its great - given a choice I'd holiday there every year the kids like spain (pukes) nice people, great range of activities and as its only a small island you can explore the whole place quickly and easily - good public transport links on the island plus gozo too next door a short ferry ride away. The weather will be fairly warm in May - I'd avoid August and September as it gets too hot. fully recommend it... igm1 24-12-2004, 16:26 I went to Malta in July- I can highly recommend it Doesn't look like much at first, around the airport. But ask a taxi driver to take you to some nice places and you won't be disappointed! Lickszz 24-12-2004, 16:31 I have been a few times and quite liked it. However, it does seem to have got a little run down over the years. There is no problem with louts though which is good. If your going to hire a car drive carefully as the roads are shocking and the majority of drivers are crazy. extaxman 24-12-2004, 18:16 Went to Valetta last March - totally gobsmacked! The Grand Harbour is the most impressive sight I have ever seen. Several warships berthed there just looked like model boats. Going to go again this year but think we will go to Sliema, bit livlier than Valetta but easy access to there. PaulTansley 24-12-2004, 19:15 Trying to find somewhere close to a beach if poss but heard theres not many sandy beaches there. What about kids, anything there for them, I'm thinking of Malta or Tunisia. matsalleh 24-12-2004, 20:10 Originally posted by Cycleracer Trying to find somewhere close to a beach if poss but heard theres not many sandy beaches there. The beaches are all in the north Mellehia I think is the main one, I am thinking about going in march.I have not been for some 15 years I always liked Buggiba, don't know for kids.Been to Tunisia, away from the hotels it was scruffy that was 10 yrs ago. Lickszz 25-12-2004, 00:28 Mellehia Bay is very nice. I've stopped in Bugibba before and thought is was ok. Those little gift shops have always annoyed me, they all sell the same junk and nobody ever undercuts anyone. You trail round trying to find something cheaper and it's the same price no matter where you go. :D dollypeg 25-12-2004, 04:55 We've been to Malta twice. Valetta is really nice. Bugbba Holiday Complex is a good place to stay. It has entertainment round the pool every night and plenty of activities for kids. If you go try and go to a Festa. They are held every weekend from May to October and celebrate local saints days. Best firework displays I've ever seen. The shops are a bit expensive but take a ferry to Gozo you can get some good bargains. Local buses will take you all over the island and are very cheap. Lickszz 26-12-2004, 15:59 I stopped at the Bugibba Holiday complex about 6 years ago. It was ok, there was a few cockroaches in our first room but a complaint got us moved to another room and we didn't have any more trouble after that. In addition to the pool activity there was also some entertainment in the bar as well. Bugibba is quite lively if you go down to the square and it's quite central too. PaulTansley 26-12-2004, 17:59 Is there a beach at Bugibba or if not how far is it to Mellehia. Talking of the north of the island is it cloudy in the north and sunny in the south like the Canaries. Internetowl 27-12-2004, 11:58 The entire island can be covered by a large table cloth sold on the island - I wouldn't go to Tunisia (its shocking) - the shore is rocky at Bugibba - good batheing though - lots of big fish close in to chase :) Go for it - you're only young once - just watch out for the boatmen on the shoreline - well worth a trip out with them seriously. royjames 02-01-2005, 18:17 I woul'd not go there again it is full of rock and there are only a couple of beaches so my advice is to give it a miss. Plus the sea around the island is full of great white sharks, the place I went was called marsacalla and a man was eaten alive while swimming in the bay some years ago. Dont go. kirky 04-01-2005, 15:31 whats the prices like once you there.....beer food car hire etc.....i hear they drive on the same side as us.....cycle racer on another point ive never heard anyone say anything good about tunisia royjames 04-01-2005, 15:55 They do indeed drive on the same side as us,as for the prices when I went I was getting 54 maltese lira to the pound and the price of a pint was about £1-20. They are supposed to call their money pounds but in reality they call it lira. It all depends on what you want from your holiday if you want loads of sandy beaches then you will be dissapointed the best one is called sunny beach at the north end of the island. As for the maltese they are very friendly to the british on account of us helping them in the last war,in fact there is a good museum there with all the war stuff if thats your thing? The lager is called cisk and is very good the food tends to be a bit expensive but still less than here. I have traveled all around the med and for me the best thing about Malta is how crystal clear the sea is.loke I said it depends what you want. Wen hiring a car be careful where you park also as the police love to give tickets to tourists when they see a hire car. Any reputable hire company should explain all this to you though. |
