Has it always run slowly or deteriorated from running smoothly?

Could you give an idea of the machine you are running on too? (processor/graphics card/RAM)

Do you know the clock speed of your Pentium 4?

If there is a p4 in there, it will probably be ok.
RAM fine (I run it with 1Gb RAM and an AMD 3200+ Barton).

The suspect to me is either background programs running at same time or the graphics setup.... only 32mb

I'm a bit out of date on video chipsets etc. but worth making sure that *is* the problem first. Try closing as many other programs as possible before starting Total War.

Many icons in the systray? Right-click-> exit a few of them.

Check the packaging on the game box for compatible chip sets.

Though for a game like Rome Total War (not cutting edge) I guess you would be ok with most 128+Mb cards.

I have a 256Mb Radeon by ABit which is still quite sufficient for me. Not sure what going rate for one of those is...but wont be stupid money.

EDIT:
You'll also need to know what type of port you have for graphics card. Mine is an AGP, depending on age of your mainboard you may have PCI only, AGP (several flavours) or PCIe. These are not compatible, so you need to get a card with the right connector type to match your motherboard.

ATi/AMD Radeon 9550 graphics card would be more than sufficient - and they cost around £30 on ebuyer.
