Aw. I  puddy cats.
How is your cat Weenireeni?
I have to say that one of ours is a little on the porky side. :)
And I have been known to call her 'FBPC'.....Fat ******* Pussy Cat. :)
She tends to fluctuate in weight through the year, losing it over teh summer when she excercises more and gaining a little in the winter.
However, she's in food health!
Obesity in cats is a 'growing' problem - and as said on the programme, a lot of it is down to the quality and quantity of food served, indoor cats not getting enough exercise or outdoor cats having a series of friendly neighbours from whom they cadge a gree meal. If you cat is free-roaming and a little on the porky side, you could put a note or tag on their collar asking peole very kindly not to fee your cat. For indoor cats, it is a good idea to re-assess the food you serve (wet foods and cheapo dried foods are high in sugars and unhealthy additives), check the exact quantity you should be serving and try to make your cat/cats work for their dinner- use cat feeders that require the cat to open a hatch to get at the food or put cat biscuits inside feeder balls. Play with your cat- use dangly toys and introduce an activity centre- anything that encourages puss to get off its bum and exercise.
In our case, having a barmy bengal appears to be an incentive for our gang to keep on their toes- Alfie loves to chase, climb and generally get into mischief and sure enough, the rest of the gang follow suit- they run up n down 3 flights of stairs and up a cat ladder to the loft space, their food and litter trays are in the attic and we have lots of interactive toys to keep them moving. Only our old moggie Minty has any kind of weight problem and she has always been sedentary. It is more difficult to encourage one overweight cat to eat healthily when all the others are not overweight though.
