Sometime next week I will be getting a new 40 inch LCD TV, a few days later it will be connected to a Sky HD box via a HDMI cable. The old CO-ax cable will be connected directly
to the TV so that I can receive both analogue and digital signals. If I buy a Digital recorder (PVR?) is it likely to weaken the signal to the TV if I run the CO-AX cable through it (yes I know it will only record analogue this way). If there is any chance of it degrading the picture on the analogue channels I wont bother buying the Recorder.

I dont know if this will have any bearing on it, we cannot get Freeview in our area.

Thanks

I can't say for certain but I wouldn't have thought so. As long as you have decent connections and a good picture from your existing aerial then it should be no different to running it through a VCR.

Have you considered buying a PVR with Freeview included so that it won't be rendered useless in a few years time?

Well I would'nt have thought so either but I seem to remember seeing something about this problem on the web a few months ago.

The TV has freeview already installed but it is of no use in my area at present

It wouldn't affect the picture anyway because surely you'd be viewing stuff on the TV through SKY, not through the analogue aerial?

I would, however, ponder over why you would need an additional PVR when the sky HD box does recording for you anyway doesn't it, on 2 channels simultaniously.

If you're worried about degradation, plug the PVR in via scart and record the SCART output.

Because both of us watch a lot of sport on Sky, in fact she watches more than me. She watches
Premiership/Championship/LA liga football, Cricket and anything you can think of.Believe it not, it was the man in the house (me) who grumble about to much sport till I got my own Sky set up upstairs. With Sky you can record two programs at once or watch one and record one thats why she wants a extra option to record. this is only possible on analogue and as I am bypassing the Sky HD box and plugging the co-ax cable directly into the TV, a scart plug would be of no use. I think when setting up Sky HD if you use both a HDMI cable and co-ax cable together you do not get the full effect of HD transmitions

PS believe it or not my wife is a 70 year old sports fanatic

Fair enough.

Anyway, you shouldn't have a problem with picture degradation just through pushing it through a PVR. Obviously you won't get proper HD through the aerial, because no service offers that yet, you'll only get HD when you watch stuff on your SKY HD channels, through the HDMI connection.

Just don't do what I did and get a PVR without a digital tuner. Stupid thing will be obsolete in a couple of years.

why bother with a PVR, when Sky HD box can record any way?

He answered that up there. They want to record more than two things at once :o
