I always wanted to start a business, but had no idea what sort of business it would be. Then I realised I had a van sitting there doing nothing (my old van, which I originally bought with the intention of turning it into a camper.) I got myself some goods in transit insurance, stuck an ad up on this forum, and immediately started making money. I've now upgraded to a newer van.

Basically, no one is going to be able to tell you what sort of business to start, you just have to work it out for yourself. I thought about it for ages, but the idea to do what I'm doing now came when I wasn't even thinking about it. You might get some inspiration from where you least expect it!

Best of luck.

What are your reasons for wanting to start a business if you don't know what you want to do?

I would say, if you have a decent business idea and are committed to putting the work in, then go for it. The credit crunch is not going to get any better anytime soon, actually the majority of experts think it will get worse. But, don't let it put you off. Sure, you'll have to work harder, put that just comes with the territory.

Personally, I think if you're going to start a business in something it's got to be something you're passionate about because you are going to have to put in a lot of work.

My Dad runs a Data Networking company and it's something I never thought anyone could be passionate about but you only have to go somewhere where he feels jobs have been bodged to see quite how passionate he is about it!

I know I couldn't have worked so hard at my company if I wasn't passionate and genuinely interested in animals.

I agree its all about the passion thing (unfortunately it would seem the things I am passionate about are not always what the market is but meh! I’ll sort it eventually  )

I also think it is all about the motivation for starting up, perhaps if you think about what you want out of it you might start you head towards a particular avenue so say hours versus money might mean you look at life style business ideas versus product production or high growth start up etc. It will all effects the type of business you can start. Good luck though, it only takes that one killer idea

You need to be aware that it will probably take a long hard slog before the money and customers start to come through, its very rare a business just appears one day and is profitable and full of customers/clients the next.

If your not extending a passion, then you probably want to identify an opportunity, think, were all born, we all (sadly) die, everyday we eat and drink. Something which was on the news the other day, there are now more old people than young, what could this market be needing? Once you start looking, but it's always 1 percent inspiration, 99 percent perspiration...

I would advise sitting down and think about why you want to get in business. Your reason should get you going and the more you think about it, and you're observant, the more you recognise a need for something out there.

Is it a long term or you're thinking of setting up a business? Is it really, "that's it! I really want to set up a business?"

It's not really about ideas alone, but is there "a need for it." The need doesn't have to even exist now, today but because of you're vision and your belief in it, and research, will drive you to move forward.

So get a piece of paper and right down as many ideas as you can and even if something has been set up before, doesn't mean you can't deliver a better service.

Also associate with people in business, and get in there because when you mingle with the right minded people, and talks happen, you suddenly get ideas coming to you or you see a company where you can provide a service to because you've got the skills or, you can go and learn it or find the people who have, and develop a team.

So it's good to network, research, write things down and investigate.

But ideas, well, their precious. If I had a great idea for business, I won't be sharing it but doing it myself. :D

You might want to look at the SHIELD programme, designed for people who want to go into busiuness but don't know what kind of venture they'd enjoy or be best at.
