View Full Version : Please recommend me some knitting books
Lucy-Lastic 07-08-2007, 10:23 Right every year work pays for £50 towards non-work related personal development. For that last 2 years I have bought some knitting books (Vogue, Stitch and Bitch (all of them including the Crochet one) a finishing one and lots of sock books). This year I am wondering about aran/ cabelling ones - has anyone seen this one (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Viking-Patterns-Knitting-Inspiration-Projects/dp/157076137X/ref=sr_1_1/202-6116654-0056665?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1186481670&sr=8-1) on Viking Knitting or this one (http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/1400097452/ref=pe_pe_5301_7030801_pe_ar_t5) or maybe even this one (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Arans-Celtics-Best-Knitters-Magazine/dp/189376205X/ref=pd_ybh_6/202-6116654-0056665?pf_rd_m=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE&pf_rd_s=center-2&pf_rd_r=1Q8Y54FSXSYSCWW8DFAS&pf_rd_t=1501&pf_rd_p=138755991&pf_rd_i=ybh)or can recommend anything else. Come on girls help me spend £50:D

Lucy-Lastic 07-08-2007, 11:25 Where do you work??!!:help:
You wouldnt want to work there - they only pay peanuts (and not very many of those):hihi:. This is one of the bonuses that helps. Its a laboratory btw.
knitbird 07-08-2007, 16:28 I'd love a copy of this (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Best-Vogue%C2%AE-Knitting-Magazine-Techniques/dp/1933027169/ref=sr_1_84/026-2454538-7954810?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1186503835&sr=1-84), if anyone's feeling generous! Any way of getting this money spent on yarn instead, though?
If you want a kid's book, the best one I've seen is Rowan's Pipsqueaks. It's now out of print, but copies pop up on ebay from time to time.
Hmm. I know exactly what I'd get from work if I asked for £50 towards personal development. I'd get a P45 instead!
I'd spend it on yarn instead. Surely new yarn helps towards non work related personal addiction development :)
Or you could always donate £50 of yarn or knitting books to the poor Barnsley folk on here
:D
The knitters Aran and Celtic one is pants. I'll lend you my copy if you want to peruse it, but I was mightily unimpressed.
Do you have this (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Knitting-Nature-Designs-Inspired-Patterns/dp/1584794844/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/203-6303100-0604755?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1186507205&sr=8-1) one? It's awesome.

Ooooh that looks interesting - I shall see if I can find something which shows some of the projects:)
BTW yarn isnt allowed unfortunately - books and courses are.
What about this one (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Fitted-Knits-Projects-Fashionable-Knitter/dp/1581808720/ref=pd_bxgy_b_text_b/202-6116654-0056665?ie=UTF8&qid=1186503835&sr=1-84)- Ive always fancied the idea of knitting something top down.
I've got fitted knits too (book harlot that I am), and there are some nice patterns. The only downside is that the majority of the patterns call for aran or chunky weight yarn, and I'm not overly keen on jumpers in that weight for me (big boobs and big yarn aren't a great combo).
Oh I don't have that book yet but it is at the top of my list. I just love Stefanie Japels designs as they are such my style and she is fabulous at providing support if you need it. She also encourages people to modify her designs and customise them which I find really easy to do with her patterns.
Moonfire 28-09-2010, 15:26 Today I picked up '100 flowers to knit and crochet by Lesley Stanfield from the library, I got it home and have done a leaf, an acorn and now working on a poinsettia, this book is so going on my wish list, it has made me think I'm not as hopeless as I though I was at knitting :)

pixiepear 28-09-2010, 17:49 I got this for Christmas last year and I love it:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Stitch-Time-Knitting-Patterns-1920-1949/dp/0955620627/ref=sr_1_2?s=gateway&ie=UTF8&qid=1285695981&sr=8-2
Haven't made any of the patterns yet but there are plenty that I plan to make one day!

That looks a bit too fancy for me, although I'm sure they will look lovely when you have finished a project :)
Mr&MrsRadish 28-09-2010, 21:04 My fave knitting book at the moment is "Knitting MochiMochi." All sorts of weird and wonderful things for me to knit for the eldest junior Radish whilst she is in the wilds of Universlty. Well, that's what Mr Radish says I have to do with it anyhow. If any other book is included it's "The Edible Garden" by Alys Fowler.

I'm always on the look out for that kind of stuff, I am waiting for them to translate a Tomoko Takamori book that has a pattern for Penelope from Show me, Show me (the show on Cebeebies) in it. :)
