Forget the conspiracy theories about the oil / wars etc.
Forget the using of religion for power.

I'm interested in the possibility of tracing these evil doers who post sickening video of victims pleading for help and / or being murdered in cold blood, and those who post announcements saying they are responsible for the recent bombing etc.

In the press there is never any mention of tracing these to a computer. I mean, the internet was invented by the military right, so how ironic is that if they can't even trace these evil animals to their lairs?

Anyone any case info?

If they use a dial up ISP then the IP address they get when they connect up is likely to be randomly generated from a block of available addresses.

So if the ISP keeps records it would know what IP addresses were issued at what times to which dial-up ports. They could then use phone records to determine the origin of the dial-up, and hence get a phone number and address.

However....they could dial in through a mobile, via a hacked private switchboard, via an academic network. They might send the video to a third party for upload via an anonymous server, like penet.fi used to be.

Even with things like Echelon and Raptor it's still posisble to maintain anonymity in the digital world, if you're determined enough and still have a few contacts...:(

Don't they just make the video and then pass it on to the Al-Jazzera TV network?.

Blimey. See what u mean. One forgets how elaborate it is, sat here in ignorant bliss on a few selected safe websites...

Do you know of any interesting research sites into this form of criminal investigation?

Ps. I mentioned forgetting the conspiracy theories but I am untrusting and therefore suspicious as work on to tracing these announcement makers....

penet.fi never guaranteed anonymity though, it was just the first anon remailer that got thoroughly toasted. It is more difficult now, especially since many free dial up ISPs require caller id to be available before leasing out a connection

Mind you, the alt.drugs hierarchy used to rely on it totally to shield the posters from immediate identification.

Not sure what I would do now if I wanted true anonymity , probably use a stolen cc to rent a random server somewhere in mainland china - and use that as a procksy (sorry dodgy keyboard here no ecks key)
