Hey everyone. I have received mixed opinions on Kasbar - is it worth checking out? What kind of music do they play? Any special offers going on?

Casbah is a nice enough venue but the drinks are quite expensive.

Music wise it depends on what night you go I think, but generally it's rock music.

If you like a fairly average, no thrills rock bar then the casbah's for you. Not trying to put the place down, just from my experience I've never found anything special about the place.

Casbah downstairs is full of moody rough types who want to drink all night, and are looking for someone to argue/fight with. The rock theme is just decoration on a saturday, as they play music like Depeche Mode and new romantic stuff. The drinks are extremely expensive, it's freezing upstairs because they leave the doors wide open, and the downstairs room which used to be the legendary WAP (sadly missed r.i.p) often has a flood and the middle of the floor is 2 inches deep with water..
Also the music downstairs is always on full blast, which is too loud. You cannot hear what people are saying even if they shout in your ear.

My advice is spend your money in the Nelson or the Classic Rock Bar, much better places.

It's worth going in just to use the toilets downstairs. :)

This is maybe a bit harsh! When was the last time you went, because I didn't find that when I was there two weeks ago?! I find it is full of people who are there for the music and enjoying themselves. Or maybe I am one of these people you are talking about, Grrrrrrrr

Hi Becky, I last went in 3 weeks ago. I go in regularly (at least ev 6 weeks) because I have a genuine affection for the venue.

I have played there in the past, run a sound system, and spent much of my youth there. In my opinion it has lost it's position as a gem in sheffield's rock life. And it almost brings me to tears to think about what it has turned into. The Wap was one of the greastest venues in the north of England, I could bring people back to sheffield, and show them something really rare and special 6 years ago.

Now it's all lost.

Hmmm, I see what you mean, I first went about 4 1/2 years ago, and it has changed quite a lot since then.
But all is not lost, it has just lost its way a bit - but despite that, I do still like it there, as you do muddy coffee, but not just for how it once was. Still think it is one of the better venues in Sheffield, just different to how it used to be.

Ok Beckyaa, the first time I went in was nearly 20 years ago. From then throughout my student years it was the most friendly drinking establishment in the whole of sheffield. I never experienced an atmos like it, without taking anything banned! When the new people took over, you could still sense a little of the old wap spirit, but it has almost gone now.

The other thing to note about the building is that the whole block is due to be demolished in the improvements to the area. And as a consequence, I doubt they are willing to spend a fortune on the place. If you were to open a new bar like that it would not get planning consent unless there was disabled access.

Hiya, I used to work there approx 5/6 yrs ago(door security) and by the sounds of it nothing has changed ie: still full of p*** heads, music too loud, drinks expensive AND THE FLOOR STILL SWIMMING IN WATER !!!!!!!.

I also remember the ceiling falling in I would have thought that would have been repaired by now obviously not.

Thumbs down to Casbah last night. 4 of us decided to duck into the upstairs bar for a pint, place was empty. Anyhow at the bar drinks coming and one of the doormen came over and took Dave back to the door. I went over only to find that he's been ejected for wearing "Track Suit Bottoms?" Anyway we all walked out leaving drinks on bar, wishing we'd ordered 10 jack daniels and black current. [expensive and they couldn't pour it back into the bottle]

And had a quick shufty at dave's strides, and they are Green slacks with a stripe down the side, not in any sense of the word "tracksuit". And incidentally he was wearing a Rammstein top, how more rock can you be?

No wonder the place is empty. :loopy:

Casbah is a con.

Beer is expensive - toilets are disgusting.

I used to think it was great. Then one night after paying £2.80 for a pint of Caffreys in a plastic pot I never went again.
I bought the drink and as I was walking back to my mates I felt my leg was all wet and cold. When I looked down I was covered in beer which was flowing out of a 1cm wide hole in the bottom of the cup. I took it back to the same women who served me in less than thirty seconds and when I told her what had happened and showed her the hole she said I had done it and that I had drunk the beer. I couldn't believe it. When I tried showing her that the beer was all over me strides she called the bouncer over. She asked me if I wanted to argue with him. I told them where to shove their s**tty club. Music is great, people in there are great but the staff, toilets and prices stink.
Rant over.

Casbah last friday was empty and horribly expensive... that said it has been good in the past, but always fairly souless and too expensive for what it is.

upstairs is very pricey and the beer isn't very good. Not a great atmosphere either.

Downstairs is basically a hall with a few clapped out chairs and tables either side and a run down seating area at the back. there is always beer everywhere. They use plastic glasses and the toilets :gag:

it is a dive. It's worse than Corp

Casbah ?

Nah not worth it any more - drinks extremely expensive, place empty and soulless, toilets disgusting, worst thing sof all shiet accoustics downstairs mean u get deafened with your ears ringing for 2 days afterwards - not a way to spend a sat night - instead get yerself over to cutler have 2 pints of lager for price of one and still be cheaper than 1 pt in casbah, great laid back crowd, good atmosphere, good music and even got a dance floor ..

Its got a white sign, cant miss it.

We recently started a night in Cutlers, was very nice indeed.

Cutler is quite nice, pleasantly surprised last time i went.

Drinks seemed to change price every 5 minutes thoug, first round was before 2 for 1 started and two pints and a bottle of corona came to £3.90... and impossible combination according to the menu. then the pints went up at 2 for 1 time???? hmmm..... still cheap though

So it's above where the sportman is somewhere.
And it's a rock bar. What kind of rock music does it play?

Hubert
14-03-2005, 17:39
its next to wetherspoons at bottom of division street

not sure about the sportsma, there is a localtype pub next to it but i thought that the sportsman was further down on way to leadmill / centre for pop music.

I wouldnt describe it as a rock bar though

The local pub is the Sportsman, was a rough and ready rock bar at weekends for decades, but not quite so good recently.
Oh I was assuming that it was a rock bar as it was in the Casbah thread and that is supposed to be a rock bar.

Sportsman is classed as a rock bar and is generally quite good. Its usually full of regulars however things are a bit up in the air at the moment as the brewery have sold the lease so folks don't know what the new owners are going to do with it. Some say it will change into yet another townie joint others say the rumour is it will stay the way it is with current staff and landlord (who are all great). It would be a great shame to see it go!!!

Musey,
my understanding is that it will be swept away in the redevelopment of the area.

Only been to the Casbah 3 times, at gigs or *events*. Always had a brilliant time there. Yeah its a bit of a *dive* but most of the places that I like socialising are for some reason ! Must be a rock/alternative thing ! Never seen any *thugs* downstairs, it never appeared to be that kind of place. I'd heard that they were stopping bands playing there, I actually wondered if it had closed down. Obviously not ! Must go soon.........

I've noticed that Casbah has changed recently. I went there about a month ago and it was full of hen-hights and couple's nights out and ben sherman shirts. Not that there's anything at with that, it's just not what I am used to seeing in Casbah. I found myself wondering where all the people who used to go to Casbah went now.

But then, that said, I went again a couple of Saturdays ago and had a brill night.

Crazy expensive though. Ouch.

Did anybody go to the casbah last night? Is it me or was the music far too loud downstairs? Sounded like the dj turned the bass full on and the music didn't sound right. I left with my ears ringing and they still are now.

I went there a few months ago on a Saturday, and it was absolutely awful.

We were downstairs, and it was heaving with blokes who would have been in Roxys years ago, all trying to pick fights with men who weren't wearing the regulation short sleeved shirts.

It seems like most of the places in Sheffield that used to be good have been taken over by people who don't give a stuff about the music, and just want a late drink.

Very sad :-(

A lot of the staff there are a bit 'difficult' to say the least. Some of the doormen are O.K but one of them is a proper psycho. A youngish, small lad who seems to be off his head on something. God knows how he manages to keep his job. It used to be alright, not as good as the wap but it had it's good points. Now it's just tacky and soulless.

The Casbah reminds me of the Limit.

Dark and dingy with good music. Yep the drinks are expensive but they are in most clubs.

Jeeeez... a mixed bag of opinions about the Casbah... anyway, we've got a new management and promo team and he's some of the new stuff we're doing...

*Happy Hour drinks offers, 8 till 2 all week, 8 til 10 on Friday & Saturday: £1.50 pint Coors, Reef, Grolsch, Vodka/Mixer, AfterShock, Jagermeister...

*New midweek nights:
Monday, Free Entry: punk/emo/hardcore/indie/rocknroll/post-rock!
Tuesday, Free Entry: dub/reggae/dancehall/rocknroll!
Wednesday, Free Entry: acoustic acts followed by classic rock!
Thursday, Free NUS/ £1 Entry: the unsigned DJ set, exposing the areas finest talent, followed the UK's finest live bands, followed by the finest indie/rocknroll tunes!

Friday's & Saturday's remain as they've been, packed with party goers and the best rocknroll/classic rock/indie/punk/newromantic etc...

We've also got a full on return for live music, with the country's most exciting touring bands once again stopping off at the Casbah.

As for the place being knocked down, that won't happen for another 5 years atleast... we're having a brand new refurbishment of the upstairs bar in the next few weeks, so the Casbah is very much still alive and kicking! When this place works (which once again it does now) the atmosphere is unbeatable!
