View Full Version : Eclectic nights vs. sameold sameold
Given a 'typical' friday night, would you rather go to a night playing various types of music (still within reason) or would you prefer a club where you knew what you were getting, sticking to the one music style that you might be in the mood for?
Depends if you can trust the DJ to play good eclectic stuff..
If it is a set full of random crap just because it is obscure I wouldnt be going back
Have you had any bad experiences lately? ..or good ones for that matter?
welchiewelch 22-12-2004, 13:25 That word eclectic is 'orrible....
mix it up tho'. Personally, I get bored otherwise. Change the rhythm, the mood and the tempo. Bloke is right tho' - sometimes work, sometimes doesn't......
bassman-x 22-12-2004, 15:57 if you want eclectic or 'mixed up' on NYE come to Modular @ The Earl where we'll have three arenas of maymem featuring the usual transmission randomness, spannered playing different stuff and rent with discofunksoul.
Listen out in the New Year for more news on the next Transmission, after the success of last Saturday we will definitely be back bigger and better in the new year! We play quality music whatever the style!

it's like saying, do you like to play football or to do the triathlon? i'm sure there is an equal amount of joy to be had out of both...
it's always interesting to hear a quality mix of music but it's also good to hear a specialist excell in their field.
besides, what do you mean by eclectic? this is a slightly nonsensical word these days that for a lot of people seems to sum up a particular mixture of music (differently for different people) rather than being completely open ended as the word suggests...

hee, these things always go the same way - it is of course very true what you say - I dont think anyone is arguing against the worth of nights mixing it up a little more than others.
What would be interesting to see is how many people find themselves regularly in the mood to be.. maybe suprised a little, or at least introduced to things they may not have danced to before.
As far as categorisation and being open-ended goes .. well i'm sure your'e better with words than me : scuba might play deep/tech/real house music, coalition might play drum&bass - Stufft Olives might play reggae/desi/hip hop/drum&bass/funk/soul - you get the picture..
I've just met a lot of people who will either strongly be in the mood for a drum & bass night, and go to one, or be in the mood for 6 hours of straight breaks, and find their way.. I just always find myself like welchie though, liking it shaked up a little :)
welchiewelch 23-12-2004, 12:28 Yepp yeppity yep....eclectic is meaningless and one man's eclectic is another man's something or other....if u know what i mean ? I don't. But then I have twisted my ankle which could be affecting me in ways I know not how.
Anyway, people have said to me about Phonetics "oh it's an eclectic night" or that I am an "eclectic dj" but although our music policy has always been wide as the sea with us wanting to play as much as we can get away with - it all has a common thread running through it. Whereas someone like my brother likes Dillinja, Dave Matthews Band, Omar, Plantlife and Black Sabbath....
Thought Herbert was a case in point. I liked his dj set although I do prefer his jazzy stuff more. But the amount of different sounds: from big band to techno that he has made music in is incredible.
But the term eclectic is meaningless - it became a term for nights in the mid 90's that Gilles Peterson etc were doing - but then there was a common theme running thru that. Surely nights like Kingdom are eclectic ? From fiddy cent thru to come on eileen (i'm guessin').
Comes down to personal choice. Know what yer saying Senor Scuba about hearin a master in his craft. It's just, personally, most of the time it bores me. Really enjoyed Carl Craig at Urban Gorilla doin his thang....but then I really love it when a DJ plays it a bit brave and drops something completely different. I find it hard to listen to one type of music all night no matter how much I love it.
Have always wondered what people do want ? One type or variations of type or a mix up. Never sure. Some people seem very close-minded. Met people who ONLY listen to house or hip hop or salsa or whatever. Genuinely don't listen to anything else !! But then sometimes I think there's a lack of radio stations, big name djs, acts and club nights that bother to challenge it. Because it is easier to market if people can understand clearly what the product is. I was thinking that the other day when I heard a new Osunalade track and thought, his **** used to sound so fresh and now he's just rinsing the same rhythm out again and again....is he not bored of it ?
Yer right tho' - each have their worth.
Goldenlady 23-12-2004, 13:04 LOL !! That is what my friends and me have always called phonetics - an eclectic night. But then I have heard brazilian music and hip hop and all sorts of things so what else are we to call it ?
You might find that insulting but that's what you are !!!
Can I have a proper response to what is happening with Phonetics now please ?
coalition 23-12-2004, 13:08 bloody hell chris that sprained ankle of yours meant you've become some wizardess secretary who loves typing mammoth llyod grossman like answers??? Got ta love ya mate...will you be back in full marathon health by NY or can i get you a care assistant at £9 an hour to push u round in a wheel chair while you shout..."i wan tha one" at random women!
welchiewelch 23-12-2004, 14:04 Golden Lady - What does LOL Mean ? I've given you all the information you need for a full and enjoyable life. Eclectic ? ECLECTIC ? ECLECCCCTIC ? Just good music is what i'd say. But then that's a bit arrogant intit ? Call it what you want. I mean that in a nice way.
As for the one man filter swilling unit that is Coalition - i'm a touch typist son, my fingers dance across the keyboard, I should have been a pianist. But of words. Basic principles of work: faster u type - more time for tea which i've just drank and it was lovely thanks for asking....
My self-inflicted footie injury will be fully heeled by NYE - if not i may need your assistance to rest my ankle on your shoulder while I dj. Could be the start of sumut bootiful....
Have a good xmas - c u NYE !!! Bring yer daughter to the slaughter.
