View Full Version : Pimp your best Photo !
OK this is the thread to pimp the photo you deem to be your favorite that you've ever taken. You can only pimp ONE photo !
You might choose it because its technically flawless, nice looking, or it brings back special memories. Just make sure its suitable for a family audience :P
Now remember - just ONE photo. See how hard it gets to choose among your best :P
Hey,
I think this one is my best at the moment:
GL Note : <Link broken>
Why?
Because it seems to signify almost everything I am trying to achieve right now. I'm looking for something different, something magical... To bring back that innocence and magic the world once had when you were younger... I dunno, I'm obviously a bit tapped.
At the moment (I'll probably change my mind by the time I get to the end of this post!), it's this photo of San Francisco (http://www.sheffieldphotos.com/f/SanFran). For various reasons - my first visit to the States, a memory of a fantastic city, a really memorable night cruise and I even like the photo too! :)
I had to do a bit of tweaking to get the perspective of the bridge right because of the wide-angle lens, but the rest is mostly untouched. I took others on the same evening that are probably better "picture postcard" photos of the city harbour, but this is the one I like looking at the most.
Tomorrow, I would probably choose a different favourite but today:
Nothing too spectacular about this night shot (http://www.pbase.com/mb1pnm/image/56794222) taken in Crookes but I love the textures.
Ooooh thats rather nice :)
shuwarrior51 10-08-2007, 15:12 My forst post in this forum having just got into photography.
this is a photo i took whilst on the Staten island ferry in New York recently - hope you like it

Stunning photos everyone. :)
hope you like it
I do for sure, worthy of a
And I think this is currently my favourite photo (i've probably shown it before): http://www.flickr.com/photo_zoom.gne?id=1074591786&size=o
I've had a real torrid time picking my one favourite photo, but in the end decided it was probably this (http://public.fotki.com/GElliott/travel/world_tour_2005/usa/2005-06_yosemite/0506103_yosemete.html) one. I think the rainbow finishes it off perfectly.
Not a nice memory but it captured the mood I guess!

Not a nice memory
Maybe not, but it's a cracking pic
chrisp7091 19-08-2007, 12:42 Dunno if I have any favourites, but here are a few I don't mind:
http://www.pbase.com/chrisp7091/image/84123976
My daughter with her chocolate pudding liberally smeared around her face!
http://www.pbase.com/chrisp7091/image/66615704
Interesting buildings in Attercliffe.

A vew of part of Sheffield that I thought can't have changed much for many years

Just a bit of fun.

Hi,
what wide angle lens did you use for this picture? I'm trying to work out a "wish list" of more camera kit!
http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c22/fatbloke_2000_uk/Picture013new.jpg
this is the favourite for today.
papillon 23-08-2007, 18:09 My photo website has around 550 of what I (critically) think are my best photos on there now, so it's really difficult to choose.
I guess my favourite is probably this one (http://www.neuroticcamel.com/photoblog/index.php?showimage=127), but I love my recent photos from Egypt too.
My whole portolio is at http://www.neuroticcamel.com/photoblog. And seeing as this is a pimping thread, I'd really appreciate feedback, as I don't get many comments when I update the photos!
I call this one Dealing with the Hoodies (http://rfstock.co.uk/Images/OR3U2541.jpg) :)
AJ sheffield 01-09-2007, 17:20 Tomorrow, I would probably choose a different favourite but today:

Thats an excellent picture.
Thanks AJ. The way a locality is transformed by night and snow is a real interest of mine.
Have you posted any spider shots?
Pete
BoroughGal 02-09-2007, 09:02 I'm not a photographer, and I don't know how to 'fiddle' with the photo's, but this is one of my favourite photo's that I've taken.
It's taken in Statue Park, Budapest, where they've managed save all their huge, imposing, iconic statues from the communist era. I had to climb up a wall to get the shot right!

I took many photos of my collection using a normal 35mm camera but I was a terrible photographer. Its all about the macro with insects and they were not very impressive.
I have some photos but I dont have a scanner so theres little I can do.
Wysseri (http://www.flickr.com/photos/38356736@N00/) from this group has taken some lovely digital macros. Perhaps they can get close enough to get some nice shots? Close-ups of the complex eyes of spiders are fantastic!

JoanCrawford 06-09-2007, 14:42 Wow, such a lot of talented photographers, your pictures are just gorgeous! I am fairly new to photography but a few weeks ago my boyfriend and I decided to take photos of some of our favourite places in Sheffield, especially those that looked in danger of disappearing within the next few years. Spookily one of them was the Gatecrasher building which burnt down the following week, and another was the Alfred BEckett works in S3 that got flooded the following week - are we jinxed, d'ya think?! However, one of my favourite photos was this one - a little place we came across purely by accident when we were taking photos around Neepsend. http://www.flickr.com/photos/73715185@N00/529572926/
GrinderBloke 06-09-2007, 19:10 Went walking in Staffordshire a couple of weeks ago and this bridge over the canal was so peaceful. Will go back in late autumn to see what the colours are like when the tree are dropping leaves.

Lovely scene and very sharp image. A pity about the white blown-out sky behind the trees but that is a common problem in the UK and has taken the edge off so many of my shots. A blue sky (polariser?) and autumn foliage would be a winner!
Cheers,
Pete

Capturing the disappearing buildings of Sheffield is a great idea, as they will all soon be gone. That one is unique, though!

I took this (http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a327/BoroughGal/JohnWattsbuilding.jpg), which is behind West Bar Police Station, not in danger of being knocked down imminently, but I think a lovely building. Again, I aint a photographer, but I'll share with you!

Aha, you also have good taste in finding lil gems.
I've just looked through my pictures but they're a bit out of order. Is this Lambert St?
I find it criminal when beautiful old little streets like this get the chop. Hope this one doesn't.

What a little treasure of a place that is! I've lived in Sheffield 15 yrs now and I wanted to capture some of these old places before they go. Lord knows film companies will spend a fortune to recreate them in ten years' time. Anyone done any photos around Attercliffe, that's my next project, including the old cinema/dance hall? that's still there.

Haha, there seemed to be some argument about the address number. I'm gonna pop down for piece of mind.:hihi:
Thing is, there's not really much point in postings my street and building pictures in here, I go for as much detail as possible rather than beautiful photographs. :)

Some nice pics there G, wonder if you happen to recall getting any of me?

Hi Richard
That's a nice shot, perfect exposure. Did you use any HDR technique on it?
richardwheel 09-10-2007, 22:05 cheers pete, no HDR used, I use Cokin X-Pro filters to balance the sky though.
JoanCrawford 10-10-2007, 09:36 Richard - what a beautiful shot - that's brightened up my morning no end!
I guess I should pluck up the courage to pick a pic...

I like the first one, as it has the makings of a dramatic shot; the low eyepoint and wideangle is definitely to my taste. The sky is great and the boat in the foreground is quite a strong image. I would increase the contrast and use more sharpening to get the focus more on the boat. There is too much detail behind the boat for me; a little blurring might help here, again to help focus the eye on the boat. Alternatively, you could add back some washed out colour to the boat, which would throw the background detail into obscurity.
Or you could just leave it as it is!
Pete
The last one was took at Beamish Museum a month or two back and the frist was tok at Mousehole in Cornwall. I liked the sky in that shot the most I think.

Yes, Traeth Pwllheli is excellent. I like the graininess of the image and the bold colours. Looks like it would make a beautiful print.

sallonoroff 25-10-2007, 15:10 I'm seriously impressed with the majority of the photos on this thread. There are some real stunners.
They certainly make me feel quite inadequate (i'll maybe post one of mine up later for you to see how rubbish i am by comparison).
That said, i'd be interested to know what sort of kit was used for most of these snaps... i mean, are we talking 100% SLR-users here?
Also, i might be wrong, but a lot of them appear to have had some re-touching done. That's something i never bother with. Maybe i'm a purist... or just lazy. :) Anyway, how many of these superb snaps have had a little help along the way?
I'm seriously impressed with one of pete's photos (http://www.pbase.com/mb1pnm/image/56794222) and would love to know how the devil you take something like that? Light levels are obviously terrible, yet that looks amazing...
PS. Some amazing buildings highlighted here too. Some real hidden beauties... shame almost all of them are featured here because they're about to be demolished! :(
.
As I said before, my current favorite is always changing... this weeks contender for my fave:

Thanks! ISO1600 on an Olympus E1, saved as RAW, developed in the Studio software that comes with the camera with adjustment of white balance (orange street lamps play havoc with this!), then noise removal using NeatImage, desaturation, contrast adjustment and sharpening in Photoshop. Basically, I just played around with the shot until I got something that resembled my memory of the scene.
So, yes, some retouching. I am not a purist! I think that only having ever used digital rather than film, the idea of purity is quite alien. There are so many in camera settings that you can adjust anyway, it is hard to know to know what 'purity' is.
With some of the newer (and more expensive) SLRs you could probably take that shot without bothering with noise removal.

I like it. The light is nice, but I think it is probably because I have a healthy interest in insects ;)
sallonoroff 29-10-2007, 15:57 Cheers. I think i was just plain lucky to get this shot.
It was late evening, the sun was low and i was trying to get pictures on flowers in the garden (probably my favourite photographic subject) when i spotted the bee wandering about.
Thinking about it, most of my favourite shots are taken in the low, late afternoon sun...

I've never really shared my photos before. Just uploaded some of my favourites to Flickr - would love some feedback, as I am just someone who enjoys taking photos, but don't know if they are any good or not. I've only got a small digital camera & no flashy stuff, so I'm limited as to what I can take. Please let me know what you think (construcive criticism, preferred!) Cheers!

Nice! The lighting and shadow give it an other-worldly quality.
To my taste, it might be improved with a bit of processing. Perhaps if you cropped it to remove some of the shadow on the left, sharpened to bring out the texture of the wood and the hairs on the bee and increased the colour saturation to increase the 'strangeness'?
Pete

There are some very good pictures in your gallery, nicely framed with interesting subjects. Did you deliberately over-expose to get the washed-out, high key look in some of the shots? My favourite is billboard. I found myself looking at it for quite a long time to work out what was going on and then drawn into the mass of detail. Excellent.
Perhaps if you cropped it to remove some of the shadow on the left...
Noooo, don't do it! :)
The shadow being there provides a lovely contrast that makes the light/insect stand out. Without the dark on the left it would be just another insect on a bit of wood pic ;)
Edit: Photography - sooo subjective :)

Grass roots is good, though it does seem to lose something when you look at the larger version. Can't put my finger on it though.
Green Door is great, and Billboard too.

However, i've made some quick alterations based on your ideas pete...
Here's the outcome (http://moonlightcomputing.googlepages.com/bee_800mess.jpg).
I don't think the cropping works (but then i might have taken too much/not enough), although i must admit that increasing the saturation has done something for it. In fact, i can't look at the original (http://moonlightcomputing.googlepages.com/bee_800.jpg) now without thinking it looks washed out. :(
(btw, the photo was taken 3 or 4 years ago with my 2megapixel fuji. The original is only 1600x1200, so there's not a lot to play with cropping-wise)
.
Think I prefer the new version...the colour is soo much nicer.
Maybe there is an improvement by a slight crop...
can we have a cropped/uncropped with same saturation for comparison please? :hihi:
sallonoroff 30-10-2007, 16:56 Right then, here's the original (ONE), the cropped/sharpened/saturated (TWO) and the uncropped/sharpened/saturated (THREE)...
ONE (http://moonlightcomputing.googlepages.com/bee_800.jpg) Vs TWO (http://moonlightcomputing.googlepages.com/bee_800mess.jpg) Vs THREE (http://moonlightcomputing.googlepages.com/bee_800mess_nocrop.jpg)
.
sallonoroff 30-10-2007, 17:00 It saddens me to say it, but now i've seen my baby in all it's technocolour glory, i think i prefer it (number 3) to the original.
.
I *think* my fave is the uncropped but enhanced colours one...
Could I post a couple of versions? Feel free to say 'no'!
Pete
sallonoroff 30-10-2007, 17:22 Please, by all means... i'd be interested to see what you can do.
.
OK, just for fun here is the original (http://www.pbase.com/mb1pnm/image/88131454) again, a cropped (http://www.pbase.com/mb1pnm/image/88131460) version, a cropped/sharpened,saturated (http://www.pbase.com/mb1pnm/image/88132947) version and a complete (http://www.pbase.com/mb1pnm/image/88131450) change.
Do you know, I think that I may prefer the original after all:hihi:
Pete
sallonoroff 30-10-2007, 17:38 :hihi:
i can't actually tell any difference between the original and your edited one?? (apart from the cropping, which is pretty obvious!)

Ahem, slight slip up there. OK, try it again now.
Excellent.
No, I havn't deliberately done anything, just point & shoot & a bit of reframing on some of them. I dabbled a bit with Picasa on Grass roots & Covert window, but don't really know what I'm doing. Thanks for your comments - much appreciated!
(As a fellow amateur, armed with only a point-and-press...)
I really like them.
Grass roots is good, though it does seem to lose something when you look at the larger version. Can't put my finger on it though.
Green Door is great, and Billboard too.
.
Again, thanks for your comments. Grass roots was the only one of the 3 you mentioned that I have altered in any way from the original shot straight from the camera, perhaps thats why - I've probably not got the highlights/colour quite right?

If the original shot is not interesting, no amount of messing with it can really change that. The prominence of the bee's shadow makes this picture for me.
I always regard the image that comes from the camera as just the starting point for the final image.

Pete,
Not that i'm wanting you to give all your photo editing secrets away, but could you tell me what software you used to do the complete change one? I've seen a few like that around and have always been intrigued by how its done. I wouldn't mind having a go at doing some myself.
While we are on the subject on photo's, please take a look at my collection on flickr and let me know what you think.

I did it in Photoshop, using the history brush to reimpose the colours on the bee after desaturating. It could have also been done using the lasso tool to select the bee or using the 'wand' tool to select areas of similar colours, then inverting the selection before desaturating. The lasso is best if you have a pen/pad thing instead of a mouse.
I like your panoramas, especially Traeth Pwllheli (I think I commented on this one earlier). The others are technically OK but do not stand out (I am well-placed to say that, 'cos many of mine are the same!). If you want to make something to grab the viewer you have to go to great lengths: getting up very early to catch the low light angles at sunrise or by using neutral density gradient filters and a tripod to generate dramatic cloudscapes whilst keeping detail on the ground like Richard (http://www.peak-photos.co.uk/). Alternatively, you can go for dramatic shots, perhaps using the widest zoom on your camera from a very low viewpoint etc. Check this person's Flickr (http://www.flickr.com/photos/acam/) site for some ideas. He will stand up to his neck in the sea to get the perfect shot! He also does some complicated processing on his shots but this still requires good composition in the first place.
I think the way to go is just to experiment with lots of different angles and camera settings for the same scene and then play around with your processing software. Expensive to do with film but free for us digital users!
Cheers,
Pete

Thanks! I thought that you had done something similar here (http://www.flickr.com/photos/dafoot/1037820749/in/set-72157600950482300/) but on closer inspection it's real! If you desaturate the background it would be even more spectacular, though.
No editing at all there - straight from my (phone) camera!
Desaturate eh? I'll have to have a play with that. Any idea if it's called the same thing in Gimp?

Wow, I've not used Gimp2 until just now but that is really impressive for a free program. You can desaturate in Colours, Hue-saturation, just move the saturation slider to the left. I do not know whether it has a history brush or not but you could select the spider using the magic wand.

It really is... so far anything anyone has suggested I do using photoshop there has been a Gimp equivalant. Just a matter of finding them!

Thanks,

You seem to be doing pretty well with it:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/44841604@N00/1814172662/.jpg
You need to work to the camera's strengths, not its weaknesses. If it can't do wide-angle well, work on the more detailed close-up stuff. I presume that its main virtue is portability. Take it with you everywhere and use it whenever the opportunity presents itself: people doing strange things, details of old buildings, unusual views of familiar places. Does your line of work take to anywhere out of the ordinary? Tell a story in pictures, etc.
BTW, Hemlock (http://flickr.com/photos/16835430@N03/)'s pictures are rather nice and taken with a simple camera (well, that's what s/he said, anyway!). Looking at other people's photos is a great way to get new ideas.

Draggletail 03-11-2007, 20:57 I'm not a photographer, and I don't know how to 'fiddle' with the photo's, but this is one of my favourite photo's that I've taken.
It's taken in Statue Park, Budapest, where they've managed save all their huge, imposing, iconic statues from the communist era. I had to climb up a wall to get the shot right!
Link to photo of statue. (http://s14.photobucket.com/albums/a327/BoroughGal/?action=view¤t=statuepark.jpg)
I love the way he is 'embracing' the sun :)
BoroughGal, here is the easiest little utility in the world to 'fiddle' with photo's...
http://www.colorpilot.com/wire.html
For instance, if you wanted to take out the wires at the botton of the photo, and possibly the trees, you could :)
Draggletail 03-11-2007, 21:04 Here's one I'm pretty pleased with, I like the way you can see the curvature of the earth (or is it just a distortion of the lens....)

Nah, it was on a plane coming back from Aus, the view is towards Bucharest.
Probably a bit of a lucky shot to be honest.

Hi, thanks for saying my photos are nice, that means a lot to me. The camera I use is Pentax Optio S6, very simple, but really small & easy to carry everywhere. I'm just snap-happy & take photos of anything that catches my eye at the time. I think it is more to do with seeing unusual shots in ordinary places. I like to have a theme to make me look in familiar places in very different ways, then I find shots I would have missed if I had not been purposfully looking for a specific shot.
Hi All, just thought i'd add my favourite picture.

Get the missus to come along as well - I dragged Mr Hemlock along & he really enjoyed it! It would be great to have more photographers to hold the group up to take that 'must have' photo!
Hehe...I know what you're saying, but the other half would be in the 'come on take the picture already' group!

I think that you have a real gift for spotting and capturing interesting images when (I suspect) many others would simply walk on by.
Speaking of which, I like walking in groups and photography but I find that I can't do both at the same time. Perhaps this is just my inability to multitask!
Thank you. i like looking at other people's photos as well as for inspiration as well as spotting interesting images. Would still love to start a (themed) photography walking group - who knows how far we would end up walking!?!
Oops, sorry for the grammar in the last post - meant to delete 'as well as'
My last photo-walk was Mam Tor, at sunrise. Needless to say, after two weeks of glorious weather, it rained heavily all morning. A more urban photo-stroll would be interesting.
Anyway, if you develop any plans, let me know. I can usually spare a few hours on Sundays, particularly early on.

Well spotted! It looks like one of those shots you probably walk past several times a day and don't think 'photograph', but when it sinks into your brain and you shoot it you get a cracker.
I'd been to Liverpool many a time for work reasons but never for pleasure/photography, and wandered round the back of one of our work buildings and saw the statue gleaming at me as they cleaned it the week before (http://www.liverpoolmuseums.org.uk/maritime/exhibitions/nelsonmonument/). It's part of a huge statue...
Had to walk round it a few times as the sun was a bit harsh - took a few pics and the shadows and differential focus just jumped out at me when I got home :)

YEAH - more squirrels! :D
This is a stunning photo, I'm very new to all this. Can I ask what camera you have and what lense you used and did you do any work to it (photoshop etc). I have photoshop 6  and I've no idea how to use it apart from the usual cropping/sharpening etc - I need to learn!
Hi, for this particular shot I used a Canon 350D without a tripod at 250mm zoom, the lens is a Tamron 18-250 which I bought around 6 months ago. Its a perfect lens for me because it provides the opportunity to shoot from wide-angle to superzoom without having the need to change lenses.
I edited the Contrast and Saturation levels in Photoshop.
Hope this helps.

Yes, the last one is my favourite as well. It really works in black and white. I think that some of the other B&W ones would benefit from a bit of Photoshoppery - more contrast and sharpness for e.g.

I've posted on this thread before, but have a new favourite photo. It's here. (http://public.fotki.com/GElliott/travel/africa-2007-2008/2007-12-07-to-2007-/img1771.html)
The lion is called Subipe and lives on the Venetia game reserve in South Africa. I don't actually think this is the best photo I've taken, but it is the one with the best effect. I love the way the fence gives the picture extra definition by getting gradually more out of focus.
That was actually a very scary night, he was in a very bad mood as another lion had moved in on his territory. He got very close to us and growled alot. One of the times I thought getting eaten was a distinct possibility! :)
I've not posted mine on here before cos I know I'll take another one in the future that will replace my favourite, but seeing as everyone else is posting more than one, I'll give in...
I love the colours and light on this one (http://www.flickr.com/photos/gemmalou/2258938898/) - I'm quite proud cos I'm just getting to grips with my slr and I'm getting better results at a quicker rate than I thought I would.
There's something about the shadows (http://www.flickr.com/photos/gemmalou/2069385483/) and the sense of perspective they give along with the head stones
Glad that this one turned out so well (http://www.flickr.com/photos/gemmalou/1813934097/)

Why don't you join and represent Sheffield in numbers. There are only a measly 82 images for the main grid square in Sheffield and I've submitted 211 of the 800 for the main grid square in Lincoln. That's 10 times more than Sheffield, which is my home town. If I still lived there I'd certainly boost the numbers up. Come on you lot, what are waiting for?!

Feel free to insert pictures at will. Would be nice if one of the GL's could go through and [img] the linked pictures!
ImpInaBox 09-07-2008, 17:54 Can I make a suggestion about embedded pictures? When you quote somebody's post that has an embedded pic can you please delete the pic from the quote? It just seems a bit pointless to repeat a pic that's already visible just above - just makes the thread harder to follow - particularly if it's a biggish pic like that one just above.
Obviously if you're referring to a pic that's several pages back then it might be useful to include it again, but mostly it's just a pain.

Yup - that certainly makes sense. (as long as I remember to do it...!)
Galbraith 09-07-2008, 18:04 Is there a limit on the size of pics? pixelsize and filesize?
I thought my snap was pretty small - I only included it to bump the thread - so it might be worth asking people to limit embedded piccies to a certain size. It would certainly be a pain if people were quoting pics, especially multiple ones, regularly.

Done the ones that I could figure out how to do. Some links are broken especially the bee ones about halfway through the thread.

hehe.. must have been amazing to stand up there!!!
It truly was. They'd turned off the factories around Beijing for the celebrations they were holding in Beijing on 08/08/07, one year before the Olympics opened so we had beautiful, clear skies. Most of the year the area around the wall is just brown scrub, and because of recent rain it was a beautiful green colour. I've never experienced anything like it in my life, we were the only people on the wall, walking 11 miles in 36degree heat. It was out of this world.

Its HDR
3 exposures put into Photomatix and then just resized. The orig one looks fine but the HDR just brings out more detail.

I really like these two, probably because of the work involved in getting them! Some nice pics, but be careful of valuing images by your effort taken in getting them as viewers won't care in the least about that. Unless you're photographing something like some changing a light bulb at top of Empire State Building! :D

I would never say that's Mablethorpe! Expect a call from the town's tourist board very soon!

They are really good , which town is that? Thought it was Sheffield at first, but dont recognise any buildings?
They are really good , which town is that? Thought it was Sheffield at first, but dont recognise any buildings?Looks like Manchester. The round building at middle right is the library, with the town hall extension above it and above left of that that is the town hall which is very similar to our town hall - designed by same chap IIRC.
GMEX is bottom right.
