View Full Version : Should the Blades Use Their Old Badge?
Ousetunes 04-08-2007, 10:17 For a long time now, Sheffield United have used their circular badge on shirts and other associated items. It has become the club emblem, a simple little logo with white rose, a pair of blades and of course 'Sheffield United 1889'. It is both likeable and memorable.
But older fans will recall the beautiful coat of arms which used to form the club badge which was sown onto shirts. A Sheffied Shield and some sheaves of wheat, it looked impressive, especially on the early, simple red and white striped shirts of the early-to-mid 1970s.
Sheffield Wednesday have a similar type of coat of arms badge which to me looks much better than simple intials and an established date. Newcastle used to have NUFC on their shirt badges but reverted to the coat of arms which looks a million times better.
Are there any Blades fans on here who like me would like to see the old coat of arms reintroduced to the kit? It doesn't mean we have to ditch the circular logo, which is used heavily in and around the ground.
I'd love to see it back on the shirts, especially those in which the team could go on to win promotion. Anyone else agree and are there any links to the lovely old badge?
discodown 04-08-2007, 10:19 The old badge was I believe actually sheffields coat of arms. The two people on it are Thor and Hephastus.
Probably the reason it was changed was because its a touch arrogant of one team in a two team city to use the city arms
I agree with you Ousetunes. I'm not sure how the united emblem was but going on The Wednesdays' badge I wish it would make a reappearance. It had the Yorkshire rose on it with the club motto underneath. It was much better than the Owl we know today.

This was on the Blades shirts in the 70's.
I read somewhere it was Jimmy Sirrell who changed the design to the one we have today. I have that one as a tattoo, If we go back to the old one I will get it done above the circular one :D
As for the owls badge Ally and I am not trying to be funny here, Keep the new one because the old one you posted a link for looks like it was drawn by a 4 year old IMO.

Eric_Collins 05-08-2007, 16:51 keep the badges as is,
very easy to see,
cheaper to make
and you'll not get people saying "what team are you ?"
Names like 'The Owls' and 'The Blades' will i think seem silly with a badge with half naked guys on it and some sort of bird thing on a log , I just can't picture the names and the logo togather :hihi:
The old badges are better, hangs on to a little More Traditional for me... New badges cheaper design, cheaper to re-produce etc..
its always down to money... i know this is slightly off topic but its the same as wednesdays owl, to me he will always be OZZIE OWL, but now is Barney Owl...?wtf?:gag: WHY??
simple..merchandise, money, marketing Sell more??

I prefer the one today it looks more modern,a lot of clubs are doing the same,I think Villa have just changed there's.
To be fair the blades badge has always been pretty crap, two blades across each other??... we all know Sheffield is famous worldwide for it's steel, not so much for the football club that now inherits a badly designed symbol of it.
The Wednesday Owl is classy, futuristic and very, very trendy in it's design. I dont like the old one as much but at least it has meaning and symbolises the history of the football club - not just a sign to say 'we're from Sheffield'.

Heraldry escapes you. I wont waste my time arguing about futurism or design as you clearly know little about either.

I seem to remember the OWL logo was designed by a student in Sheffield, at Granville art college I think. Rumour has it he received a pie and a ticket for his trouble and the club got a logo they have used for over 30 years in various forms making mint from marketing it the process.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
You my man really are a fool.
Yes the Blades badge may symbolise us being from Sheffield, I for one am happy with this.
What exactly "classy, futuristic, trendy" in the owls badge? What meaning and history does the "owl" have?
A poor attempt to put down the Blades.

Late 70's design Robbie, maybe Lestat thinks it's retro chic, though I doubt it. :D
I always thought the OWL logo looked like a pig taking a dump.

His post about the owls badge just made me laugh more than I did at the Simpsons movie I just went to see.
Over 2,000 comedians out of work and Lestat's trying to be one
