The Northern Martial Arts Academies was formed in March 2006 by Sensei Stephen Ainscough and Sensei John Hallam. Sensei Ainscough holds a 6th Dan in JuJitsu and a 4th Dan in Kobudo. Sensei Hallam holds a 4th Dan in JuJitsu.

NMAA is Sheffield based and we train primarily in JuJitsu and Kobudo under our governing body - the WJJF.

JuJitsu is a complete system for unarmed combat - it includes strikes, joint locks, throws and sweeps.

Kobudo is the practice of traditional Japanese weapons. We practice the following weapons:-

Staff weapons of various sizes - bo, jo, tanbo, yawara, naginata.
Tonfa - similar to a police batton but often used in pairs
Kama - similar to a small scythe or sickle.
Sai - a three pronged weapon, similar in appearance to a small sword.
Nunchaku - two wooden sticks joined by a cord.
Katana and Boken - the Katana is a traditional Japanese sword, the Boken is a wooden version often used in training

Northern Martial Arts Academies is also the home of Gracie Barra Sheffield Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) club.

Some new information to add,
Northen Martial Arts Academies are proud to anounce that from Friday 24th of August there will be Hatha Yoga Classes on offer at our Edmund Road site.

Can you give me some information on the grading syllabus, i.e. what the per-grade requirements are for non-Brazillian Ju-jitsu?

I hold 1st Kyu in both Judo and Jujitsu from an old club in Sheffield that was non-affiliated and am looking into getting back into training. I've spent the last year out of training, but for a couple of years prior to that was training in Bujinkan Taijutsu, in which I achieved 3rd Kyu, but got tired of the commute to Nottingham for training.
