View Full Version : Mobile phones alter our DNA
NatalieSheff 21-12-2004, 11:26 Got this off BBC, bit scary?
Mobile phones 'alter human DNA'
The mobile industry says there is no proof phones harm health
Radio waves from mobile phones do harm body cells and damage DNA, a laboratory study has shown.
But the European Union-funded Reflex research did not prove such changes were a risk to human health.
The scientists behind the study said more research was needed to determine the actual effect of the phones on health.
But the UK National Radiological Protection Board said people should not be worried by the study's findings.
A spokesman said the study had not shown the biological changes led to disease.
He added that even research looking at the effects of radiowaves on cells and DNA did not consistently find evidence of damage.
evildrneil 21-12-2004, 12:52 Just living alters DNA! Without some more specific information on whether the alterations are actually dangerous or not (e.g. carcinogenic, teratogenic etc) its just another scare story...
NatalieSheff 21-12-2004, 12:55 remember that police man (traffic cop) who used to hold his radar gun in his lap and now had testicular cancer
So don't keep your phone in your pants ?
evildrneil 21-12-2004, 13:11 Not sure how this relates to mobile phones as radar guns operate at much higher frequencies then mobile phones (GHz rather than MHz). Mobile phones are much closer in frequency to TV transmitters which no-one seems to have any problem with despite the fact they typically have an energy output of 10 to 100 times that of even a mobile phone base-station!
NatalieSheff 21-12-2004, 13:37 ive also hear microwaves can be dangerous, is that also rubbish?
Depends how paranoid you want to get

Also now, for anyone (male) here on a laptop, did you know that you stand a chance of cooking your own testicles?

RE: Microwaves being dangerous for Nat,
They are if you trap your fingers in the door
Hello Nat by the way..
NatalieSheff 21-12-2004, 13:49 my fingers are small and stumpy so no worries there! are you greg greg? the dj? surrey?

er aren't mobiles on the 2.4-3.0 GHz band?(ish)? i.e radar/microwave
inverse square law means a microwave transmitter next to your ear has the strongest effect of all. (correct me if I am wrong, pulling this out of a hat I may have to eat)?
I mean, I agree with you - its largely insignificant but susceptible chromosomes may damage more easily, (something to do with telomeres?).
evildrneil 21-12-2004, 14:34 Thread slightly pruned - now back to irregular service ;)
I have mobiles listed as 850 or 1900 MHz in the states and 900 or 1800 MHz in europe (from the ieee site http://www.spectrum.ieee.org/publicfeature/aug00/prad.html) where trafic radar opperates at one of 10.525, 24.15 or 35 GHz (from http://www.osha-slc.gov:80/SLTC/radiofrequencyradiation/fnradpub.html) - though how up to date that is I'm not sure...
Phanerothyme 21-12-2004, 14:46 You're right - 802.11 is on 2.4GHz.
Mobiles on 800MHz and 1.8GHz :)
Then there was the guy who lived next to the airport, and covered his garden fence with tinfoil to suck power out of their ATC radar.
All EM Radiation has the potential to damage cells and genetic material.
Next time you use a mobile, check how hot your 'phone ear' has got during a long conversation. Now we're cooking on microwave! It was the earlier war era SF authors that came up with the "radar oven" method of cooking food.

Is it just me, or is this not actually saying anything at all?
Scaremongering...
NatalieSheff 21-12-2004, 14:55 it sorta says it changes youre bits but not damaging them, i did miss lots of the bottom though or youd have being reading 4ever.

It says to me, that they may be bad for you, but how, where and why they can't say.
Thing is, you can never really be sure.
So many studies are biased before they even begin, depending on who has commissioned the research.
Lies, damn lies and statistics, eh?
limpetboy 21-12-2004, 15:02 We're all gonna die anyway when the Ozone layer finally cracks open and all the solar radiation (probably at a slightly higher frequency that 1.8GHz) hits you in the face.
Chill out, send a txt, call the missus while you're on the bus, take pictures, listen to mp3's enjoy the sheer gadgetyness of these little boxes of death. They're great, I love em. God bless Nokia.
How to treat a subject in a balanced manner - NOT!
Have people seen the headline on the Metro this morning?
I'm going to start telling folks around me who are always jabbering in to their phones that they're already looking...different....sort of......phonelike....
Perhaps their DNA is already mutating? ;)
