View Full Version : Please help! I want a wedding venue with a twist!
KATIEB_23 02-08-2007, 12:11 I know there have been lots of threads asking for wedding venues but I've been through them all & not really found what I want so wanted to start a new thread with my specific requirements/tastes so I can get some appropriate suggestions!
Ideally we would like to have a civil ceremony & daytime buffet for about 60 with a further 60 joining us for the evening... all in the same place or close enough to not need transport!
Plus some accomodation there or nearby for that evening.
I have been through the full council's list of registered wedding venues and they all seem very similar... very chintzy, old fashioned, stuffy and unimaginative.
My pet hates are:
Dado rails, floral wallpaper & patterened carpets :gag:
Unimaginative buffets that have sausage rolls, chicken goujons & finger sandwiches! why do all wedding menus around here seem to be circa 50 years ago?!!
In fact any venues where we could sort out our own catering separately would be fab :)
Somewhere either really modern & funky would be nice, or on the complete other end of the scale; rugged & rustic (oak beams, exposed brick) we are both architects so the building would be quite important to us... unfortunately all the posh-country-manor-house type places are absolutely ruined for me by all having the same garish decorator!
I'm sorry if my rant offends anyone who likes that kind of thing... as you can probably tell I'm getting quite frustrated by this and needed to get it off my chest!
All suggestions welcome before I decide to sod it & get married abroad! :hihi:
Has the venue to be in Sheffield or are you willing to travel?
You have been to some dirgey weddings if that is what you've seen for venues and eaten.
Milly658 02-08-2007, 13:51 What about the Beauchief Hotel - have you tried that? They do civil ceremonies. There's pics on the link below, though not sure about the buffet menu.

We had initially hoped for Sheffield but will widen the search if that's what's needed.
The places I mentioned aren't weddings I've been to, they're details I've looked at on the internet. And they're not even the cheap places!
For example, I thought The Dam House sounded a good option... modern & trendy, and their usual menu looks good, but the wedding buffet looks very disappointing :(
Just looking at The Beauchief Hotel now... ;)
Not been to a wedding at the Beauchief but to some corporate stuff and not impressed with the food so go for a meal there first to check it out.
Have you checked out the usual suspects of Fischers as that has great food. But I can't recall if they do evening do's. I know they didn't but might have changed that. Cubley Hall might be worth a look for a more traditional venue/food.
There used to be a dodgy carpet at the Dam House - not sure if it is still there ( honestly how nit-picky!)
KATIEB_23 02-08-2007, 15:17 I've phoned to get more info as I can't find much on the web ;)
One of the places I liked was the new Mercure St James Hotel - the one right next to the Winter Gardens. That has a fantastic bar/lobby/restarant area overlooking the Winter Gardens that was really vibrant and modern, but the wedding function room was down in the basement, with no natural light, and was a bit soul-less! :(
Off to look at Leopold Square after work...

Oh no I missed Baslow Hall (Fischers) cos my list only had ones in Shef! Getting the brochure now.
Peronally I think if you're going to blow £10-20k in one day on a party then no detail is too picky!!
Agree with the souless at the basement room at the St James's Hotel. You can't tell if it is day time or night time and the acoustics are lousy in that room.
Check out East Lodge near Rowsley. I love the grounds but inside it has dado. Only eaten there once - was fine ( not astounding - just fine) and lovely service.
KATIEB_23 02-08-2007, 15:43 Fischers is too small :( it holds up to 40 people and we would have more like 140 for the evening do!
I've sent off for info on East Lodge
Thanks sam!
how about whitely hall hotel thats supposed to be quite good and nice gardens for photos
Tanya T 1 03-08-2007, 08:54 I am getting married at www.whirlowbrookhall.co.uk
KATIEB_23 03-08-2007, 12:06 They both look nice - I have sent off for their info packs ;)
I like the sound of the hog roast / bbq you mentioned (on other thread) - far more our cup of tea than a sit-down wedding breakfast :)
hi, have you thoughtabout a marquee, we had all he same problems as you and thats what we now have planned for our wedding next summer, find a country location you like see if there is a farmer who'll rent you a field and bobs your uncle

.. it went a year ago Sam, think the old chef took it!
Jackdanny 04-08-2007, 19:38 Have you tried the Manor House and Rooms at Dronfield???

Thanks for that suggestion - I've sent off for their info pack
Lola - we went to a wedding in Birkenhead this weekend which was in a marquee. It was fantastic! I particularly liked the thought of providing guests with all the booze for the evening instead of them having to buy their own rounds at a bar ;) I would be interested in finding out more about how you went about this. How do prices measure up in comparison?
Sheffield678 06-08-2007, 20:55 Have you looked at the Rising Sun Hotel at Bamford.
Lovely setting in the peak district.
Aston Hall Hotel is very nice, quite contemporary.
If you are willing to travel the pick of hotels for me is a place called Wood Hall Hotel in Leeds it is the most perfect setting.
Good luck
Richard

I'll check the out now, cheers :)
I'm just flicking through a brochure for Cubley Hall in Penistone & that looks nice... anyone been? Looks quite reasonable but unfortunately they haven't mentioned the price of wine or hotel rooms :suspect:
KATIEB_23 06-08-2007, 21:35 Oh. My. God.
I've just seen the website for Aston Hall!
My heart sunk when I saw it was £95/person but it looks like that includes a heck of a lot, so it might not be out of the question... :D *goes & flutters eyelids to fiance, parents, etc*
when i was reading the beginning of this thread i thought of anston hall stright away! its amazing and the rooms are fab. i want to get married just so i can go there and have the full do! i only live 5 mins away though so when i do get married it will be bit rubbish being so close to home for the special day so i don't think we could use it. we are cuttently saving up for a night in their plush room though. its amazing! x
i meant currently, not cuttently. bloomin laptop keys!!

Yes its exactly what I was describing isn't it?! Crisp clean tasteful look inside - no chintz or patterned wallpaper/carpets!
The bedrooms look so gorgeous; I might be extra-late for the ceremony cos I'm chilling out on that lovely chaise long!
It's quite pricey so we'll have to go take a look asap to see if it's worth taking out a loan for... :hihi:
I wouldn't think that living nearby was a downside for you... just think; in the panic getting ready on your wedding morning, you realise you've left something really important at home... no problem, you can send someone to nip back & get it! ;)
Or any of your guests who can't afford to stay there that night could crash at your house?

rosaespanola 14-10-2007, 16:31 My friend is getting married at Cubley Hall next year, it looks pretty good - very traditional in a rustic sense, not in a poncy floral sense! They've been for a meal on an ordinary day to see what the food's like and apparently it was really good.
Classic Rock 18-10-2007, 11:17 Go get married abroad, do it on a beach somewhere! That's what we're doing next year!
