I've already searched but the search keeps telling me its under three words when it isn't and refuses to give me any results so I will risk the wrath of a repost.

I am struggling to sew things up. I don't get whats wrong but am putting together a jumper made of 4 rectangles (a kids one) and can't get the sleeves to sew in nicely.

I'm tired and can't even think of the proper names for stuff and I'd be really grateful if someone could tell me how to sew this jumper sleeve up so I can go to bed! :p

Hello Little Blue, familiar problem... look at previous page of posts and Hecate directed me to a Knitty article on just what you could be looking for.

Good luck with those seams.

Sewing up is not one of my best skills (it's why I like socks and lace) but from my limited personal experience I can say that you're more likely to make a pig's ear of it if you are:

a) in a rush
b) tired
c) frustrated

My record is sewing in half a sleeve three times, the other half twice and the first half of the second sleeve twice. As you look to have a high score on B and C I'd go for sticking it down the back of the settee and coming back to it when you're fresh.

You need pins. It's actually more difficult to sew drop sleeves in than set in, as you have nothing to guide you. Join the shoulder seams of the front and back piece (mattress stitch or back stitch). Fold the sleeve in half to find the centre point of it, and pin it place at the shoulder. Stick more pins in all the way round. Sew it in place when you feel bright and perky and the world looks all shiny again.

And next time knit it in the round.

:hihi:

Blocking first might help too: you can get the edge stitches to lie nice and flat, ready for their operation.

I'm half tempted to rip it back and do it in the round as I hate sewing up this much!

Will leave it until I can see straight. (I'm embarassed to admit I couldn't remember how to sew this evening. It all looked and sounded wrong! Its all because I have decided to spend more time at the gym and less time on my bum and think I've over done it this week...)

You chaps are fab - where would I be without you :D

Today, I get it. :D

I can do it :D yay!

Have sewn in the sleeves of a baby cardie, about to attack my freedom spirit tank top, the mohair kids jumper and also a sleeve from a bolero.

The sewing up fairy has visited :D

Hurrah for seams that work! If I had anything that needed seaming, I'd be sneaking it into your knitting bag right about now... The sewing up fairy never comes to me. She knows I'd pull her wings off to make her stay.

LOL, know what you mean, spend way too long unpicking seams and re-doing them, and then doing them again...

Sewing-up fairy doesn't visit here too often either.
