sergeantb 01-08-2007, 06:02 PM Theres currently a planning application in planning for the redevelopment of roxy into a Class D2 (for live music) venue! The applicant is Acadeny Music Group Ltd. If its accepted we could have a large new live new venue in sheffield in 2008!

This looks like the "Carling" Academy Group currently with venues like Shepherds Bush Empire and venues in Birmingham Bristol Newcastle etc
Mentholman 03-08-2007, 06:30 PM Sounds cool.
Let's hope they allow plenty of chances for local bands to play there too.
panda79 03-08-2007, 07:27 PM lets hope it happens then maybe we will get bands who are 2 big for the octagan but wouldnt play the city hall , im keeping my fingers and toes crossed on this one:)
Sounds cool.

I doubt it - it'll be like the other Academies with national tours put on by a few of the big promotion companies.
I seem to recall talking to someone who said the Ocatagon can no longer do midweek gigs as the Uni uses it for lectures mid week - so it seems a good call for the Academy group to build a venue for the mid sized gigs (1200 upwards) that often pass Sheffield by at the momment

Sorry, that was me who didn't believe you.
But this is great news. Just what Sheffield is in need of I think (i.e a new big club/venue). It should be over 2000 capacity. It was about 2500 when it was Roxy.
Hello_Nikki 05-08-2007, 11:29 PM Agreed, its about time we had a Carling Academy..some decent bands might actually decide to make it to Sheffield!
Good call!
MPAGE 06-08-2007, 09:49 AM This would indeed be great if it comes to fruition. Hopefully it would no longer mean travelling to Manchester to see bands at having to rush for the last train home.
Paulmat 06-08-2007, 11:11 AM Sheffield'll have quite a good selection of live venues once this is complete. 3 stadiums and the arena for the biggest bands, City Hall, Octagon & Carling Academy for big but not quite so big as the biggest bands, Plug, Leadmill & Corp for quite large bands, then various smaller ones for local bands.
shuwarrior51 09-08-2007, 01:15 PM I'm not as impressed as i reckon it could spell doom for some of the competing venues.
Bear in mind they wont have gigs on every night and will likely have a rock night...while this is good if they put it on a tueday or something...they will probably put it in direct competition with Mon/Fri Corp or Fuzz at the Union.
Can also see this not being too good for the Octagon as (at least in the first year i'd assume) bands will want to play this "New modern renovated venue" until the bubble bursts!
I've seen a few gigs at teh Octagon before and i like it as a venue. Never been inside Roxy but can imagine it'd be huge! bet you'd get good accoustics.
It could be good for gigs. more variety etc. but i can only foresee them choking other established rock nights down!
I'll just have to hope they either put it on a different night or show some support to the good ol' places!
ReginaldD 09-08-2007, 02:58 PM If it is to be a "Carling" Academy like the Apollo in Manchester and Rock City in Nottingham this is something to be really pleased about. I don't think it would spell the end for other venues as it wouldn't take too much of their business away. A lot of the bands who perform at the Carling venues haven't been coming to Sheffield so it would be something else in addition to what we already have. Earlier this year The Fratellis were touring they're one of my favourite bands, they toured the "Carling" venues so didn't come to Sheffield. I had to get a train straight after work with a few mates to go and see them, which was admittedly a really good night but it would be handy to have such bands in Sheffield.
shuwarrior51 09-08-2007, 05:01 PM only time will tell i guess!
Pipine 31-08-2007, 06:56 PM I can't wait for it to open. Hope they have some good club nites too. :D
