yo I'm looking for a picture of redvers house on furnival gate, as it was before being reclad. IT was a reddy brown building, with brown windows and almost faux japanese tiers. If anyone can point me in the right direction I'd be grateful. Sites like citysnapper, which is normally dead useful, only seem to include it from afar.

Now redvers house has been reclad it looks even worse; a cheap and flimsy grey shell with green glass, clashing with the white and brown tiles it covers. Why oh why is this sort of cladding allowed: it just means that the worst buildings won't be knocked down for another twenty years.

I think moorhead is the ugliest street in sheffield: sunwin house is blue and green, there's the big blue box on the corner (furnival house?), the octagonal buildings on the roundabout, and not forgetting grosvenor house. Ouch.

Then of course there's charter row. What an oversized, fat squat mess.

Sorry. Quite a dull post. Can anyone help?

PEACE

The Roebuck or whatever it is called this week has some pictures on the wall with views of the area going back over the years. I have a particular hatred of that building as I worked for social services for many years.
I take it that this is for the rather wonderful Go Sheffo

Nah you're right most of sheffieds existing mid rises are pants, but around 4 excellent 22 storey towers (tallest sheffield buildings bar the arts tower and hospital) are planned for sheffield over the next couple of years, two beside the moore street (ecclesall road) roundabout on the ring road are starting by the end of february.

As for redvers before the reclad (which is indeed a bit poor), not sure but this site should help Redvers House (http://www.emporis.com/en/wm/bu/?id=150703)

And you can go here for all the latest news on developments around the uk, including a Sheffield Thread in the Projects Forum.

I miss the funky 70s red plastic lettering on the side entrance (Union Street).

yo Andrew, thanks that's perfect.

thanks for the props carcrash,

I want to ask 'is sheffield anti-architecture' basically looking at the planning decisions that get passed ie the criminally bland st paul's place and shoddy reclads like this, versus buildings like sinclairs and the nat pops that contribute to the city. or something.

like the idea of the new high rise, but not sure they won't put the planners over a barrell too: cala homes at st mary's gate have already changed the details of their scheme three times, leaving council officers with a fait accompli to accept worse buildings or have no buildings at all.

I disagree, I just wish they'd recladded the tiles as well though :(

If you go to a library and get a book called Remember Sheffield ( in the 50's,60's and 70's) by David Richardson there are pictures of Redvers house being built in there.
