View Full Version : Old Pub below the Mucky Duck - What was it called?
Carlwarker 18-08-2003, 18:12 Does anyone remember the name of the pub that was just below the 'Mucky Duck' on Snig Hill and just above the American shop which was the only place you could get jeans at one time?
It was still there in the early 60's and I had my batch party there in 1959.
i seem to recall the pub was called the merry england in the late 60s early 70s
Carlwarker 21-08-2003, 14:54 Thanks kg50 but that doesn't ring a bell - although I did leave Sheffield in 1966. Black Lion seems to come to mind, although I'm not sure.
Thanks again anyway.
We used to drink in the Black Swan on Snig Hill, which was affectionately known as the Mucky Duck, AND IT RAN TRUE TO IT'S NAME INSIDE AS WELL.
PaulTansley 25-08-2003, 09:34 I recall the Yellow lion pub in the town centre, but something tells me that may have been on the Haymarket.
Arfer Mo 30-03-2006, 10:40 Think there was ayellow lion and a white lion in the whicker at one time Arthur

I believe its name was changed to The Mucky Duck, remember the fibre glass statue outside it was made by Frank Fearn, an old pal, developed this department for MONKS, and died through it.
Can't remember the pub name but the Teddy Boy shop was called Winston's. The only place for cut away collars and slim jims. A full drape from there in 1959 was 4 guineas.
Was it called "The Old Brewery Tap" or something like that?? Was it a Sam Smiths Pub (yuck!)
yes it was the "old brewery tap"
Till Man 30-03-2006, 15:40 Was it ever the Compleat Angler?
i seem to recall the pub was called the merry england in the late 60s early 70s
You would be right there KG50, i have some good memories of the place from the early 70s
babyboom 30-03-2006, 19:42 The compleat angler was the name of the mucky duck before it was the mucky duck.
Think there was ayellow lion and a white lion in the whicker at one time Arthur
that was the little white lion, now bennetts fishing tackle
The compleat angler was the name of the mucky duck before it was the mucky duck.
I thought it was the nickname of the black swan that they resurected and called the pub after it was the complete angler
merry england bar in the 70s

Those were the days, a full kit-out for less than a fiver !!
It was the Black Swan - nicknamed Mucky Duck. I drank there when it was Complete Angler then became The Mucky Duck. Now Boardwalk I believe. Don't remember the one below it though?
sweetdexter 30-03-2006, 23:50 From 1947 on Bridge St was the bus terminus we used to go into town, hence Snig hill was very familiar
For the life of me i cannot remember any pub between Winstons and the Black Swan.
That does not mean i dispute any pub being there.
At the rate the grey cells are diminishing it could just be my memory.
I looked at 'Picture Sheffield ' 'Snig Hill' and found the original Black Swan appeared to be further down Snig Hill.
On the corner were the present pub is was the offices of the Sheffield Independent.
Worth looking up .www.picturesheffield.com ,go to 'S' look up Snig hill
sweetdexter 31-03-2006, 18:36 PopT straitened me up .
It was the Brewery Tap and it was literally below the Black Swan.
It was subterranean, yes Sam Smiths.
By the way 'Sam Smiths Imperial Stout' is an excellent stout

I thought the "Brewery Tap" only opened in the mid to late '70's - original posting asked for late 50's early 60's.
sweetdexter 01-04-2006, 00:00 O.K Longcol if it was not the Brewery Tap what was it called .
I used to meet my buddy there every Saturday night in the early 60s.
The entrance was lower down Snig Hill almost under the Black Swan. Some of the windows where at street level.

After chatting to a number of the old lads in a few boozers tonight, the general concensus is that it was the "Merrie England Bar" at that time.
"Brewery Tap" came later.
Jabberwocky 12-04-2006, 11:52 It was called the Brewery Tap in the early 80s, and ran by a couple of gay guys called Len and Paul, we used to start our pub crawls off from there, then work our way through town to the Wap n Take, then into the night clubs to finish ourselves off.
We`d start at The Tap, then go to the Complete Angler, then to the Dove and Rainbow, then to the Blue Ball, then to The Stonehouse, then stagger to the Saddle, then on to The Friendship, then crawl to The Wap. On some nights, when we were feeling really suicidal, we`d get a taxi to Attercliffe and work out way back into town, and through the pubs in the Wicker. A pint in each pub.
They were good days...erm...from the little I can remember.
Remember it as Merrie England -called in on Sat lunchtimes
on way to Owls games.
There was often a DJ on and people even danced !!!
Everytime I hear "Born to be Wild" or "Spirit in the Sky" it takes me back
to that bar.
(I think Spirit was at No 1 in 1970)
The bar was closed for a long period as I recall.
Cheers Chris
The Mucky Duck was definitely the Black Swan in the late 50's - and notorious.
Bushbaby 04-05-2006, 15:24 [QUOTE=Jossman]....the Teddy Boy shop was called Winston's. QUOTE]
Bought my first pair of Levis there in 1969 for 42/6d, money I'd saved from my paper round and carol singing. Got a Ben Sherman there too.
On the pub' below the Black Swan, my money's on the Black Lion.

Your wrong it the Merrie Engalnd, bring it on back:love:
the black swan was always the black swan i.e. nickname "mucky duck"
up until the late 70's,then it became the complete angler.
the bar underneath used to be a games bar, darts and 2 snooker tables, they were below the seating and had long one piece seats along the walls that's when it was the swan, then it became the brewery tap, i think they put in some pool tables at this time, then it became the merry england, and a dancing venue, proposed to the ex wife there, one of my big mistakes.
yes you are right there use to be a pub under the black swan called the merry england bar I know of it very well as I worked there in the early 70's and always on a friday and saturday night, it was there long before the complete angler as that is what they called the pub when it had its name changed after a refurbishment. biggest mistake they made when the changed everything in the merry england bar and called it the complete angler more like the complete mess. I stopped going in there when it had been refurbished. so give that man a ceegar for getting it right
Arfer Mo 04-06-2006, 10:55 i seem to recall the pub was called the merry england in the late 60s early 70sthats right been back to uk and asked Arthur
sawguitar 10-07-2006, 19:44 hi carlwarker,it was indeed called MERRY ENGLAND.My mates and i were regular visitors there in the early 70s .Almost every Friday and Saturdays we would go.There would be a big gang of us and we would occupy almost all of the tables along the far wall(opposite side to wherethe bar was).I can honestly say that was the best time of my life.
I remember it being called Brewers Tap

Mr.Freedom 24-08-2006, 21:56 I thought it was the nickname of the black swan that they resurected and called the pub after it was the complete angler
I used to go in the Merry England in the early 70's, was the DJ called Lawrence ?, He played good soul music and there was a great atmosphere although there was a fight just about every friday night. Years later I saw Kilburn and the High Roads and The Sex Pistols there!

smileyjiver 04-01-2007, 21:07 Don't know if the pub under The Mucky Dug (Boardwalk) is still there, but it was in recent years called Under the Boardwalk - its the place I first went to learn Modern Jive (would have been around 2001/2002).
spada573 04-01-2007, 22:44 Throwing my threepeneth in, i seem to recall that the bars under the mucky duck were Merry England next to the hairdressers and lower down the hill, next to it was the entrance to the Brewery Tap. Although part of the same building they had different doors.
I believe its name was changed to The Mucky Duck, remember the fibre glass statue outside it was made by Frank Fearn, an old pal, developed this department for MONKS, and died through it.
What happened to your pal who died Arfer.

CoolHandSax 10-02-2011, 23:11 I think I would be correct in saying that The Black Swan was the venue for The Clash's first ever gig. In the eighties I worked as the cellarman in a real ale pub in London. Chatting to the Sam Smith's rep one day he said I should be familiar with their product since I came from 'Up North'. I had to point out to him that the only pub in Sheffield that I knew that sold Sam Smiths was the 'Mucky Duck'. Which was the reason why Sheffield folk thought that it was such a cr*p beer!

The Midhill WMC. on East Bank Road also sold Sams Smiths.but as i remember the Mucky Duck when Lol run it [it was a lock up] was well known for its good ale.

Apologies for bad mouthing anybody who looked after their cellar, but I certainly never enjoyed a good pint there. Maybe it was just Sam Smiths ales which, I must admit, I always found rather bland.
