£4million for a striker who has scored 13 goals in 76 games.

Am I alone in thinking that this is a ridiculous fee? It seems we are paying over the odds for a striker who has had two poor seasons since leaving Southampton.

I'm not entirely sure why we are in for another striker (particularly one so expensive) when we clearly are more needy of a midfielder.

Based on the last two years, I'd rate Beattie at £2.5million, absolute top end.

What are they calling the Dave Allen era down at swillsborough then ?

Takeover rumour after takeover rumour ..Face it nobody wants to take over your club and the debt you have :P

Being linked with EVERY player on the transfer market for 2 Million Quid and getting Loan and free transfer players only :hihi::hihi:

So I can honestly say Lestwit that you are in no position to be having a go at Robbo especially when you lot have a CLOWN running your club and a YES man for a manager.

They will never learn CB, they have a go at us to try and divert from the misery they are suffering at the moment.
Back to the question in hand what we are supposedly bidding for Beattie is far too much, but then we do have money to burn.
For that money we could have Rasiak, Brunt.
Maybe we could have wendy as a feeder club its looking that gloomy for them.

DAVID CARNEY, the gifted Sydney FC utility with a thunderous left foot, has been granted permission to begin talks with Sheffield United with the view of rekindling his dream of playing professionally in Britain.

Carney, from Campbelltown in Sydney's southwest, will today fly to the Blades' complex at Bramall Lane, for talks with United's new management team of Bryan Robson and Brian Kidd.

The breakthrough in the stalemate which threatened to scupper Carney's bid for another crack at European football, came after Sheffield United company chairman and property developer Kevin McBride, who is in Australia on business, spoke to Sydney FC officials at the weekend.

But Sydney FC remains furious at defender Mark Milligan for breaking protocol in flying to Metz in France for talks without a clearance from either the club or the A-League.

"While we've given Carney permission to fly to England for talks with the Sheffield United management after having received a formal request from the Blades, there's no such agreement in place for Milligan," Sydney FC chief executive George Perry said last night.

Perry said he learned of Milligan's moves via an email from his manager Craig Nettlebeck.

"Let's have no misunderstanding here, Milligan has gone over there (to France) without the club's permission and knowing full well he's still a Sydney FC contracted player," Perry said.

Milligan is regarded as one of the best young defenders in the A-League and had been linked to a possible move to Sheffield United.

Carney previously spent six seasons at both English and Scottish clubs before returning to play a pivotal role in helping Sydney FC win the inaugural A-League premiership.

The talented left-sided midfielder initially spent three seasons at Everton.

Both Carney and Milligan were sorely missed in yesterday's A-League Cup match in Canberra, where a revitalised Central Coast Mariners cruised into the semi-finals with a 3-0 thrashing of the Sky Blues.

Is Robson trying to assemble a football team or get together a group of buddies for a good night on the town? His last signing, Hendrie, has a conviction for drink driving, so has Beattie, his latest target. Or has Robbo got shares in a local bar or a taxi company?

Just thought I'd give you the Evertonian perspective on the proposed Beattie transfer. Basically, we'll bite yer hand off for 4 mil!

I was dead chuffed when we signed him from Southampton and he pretty much lived up to his billing for the first season (insane Chelsea head-butting aside). After that, he went downhill pretty quickly. He put on weight, seemed to lose interest and generally became a bit of a liability. His heart clearly wasn't in it. Dunno why. The cynic in me says it was most likely money-orientated. This would seem to stand up today as I believe the deal might fall through due to Biffa's wage demands.

Having said that, on his day, Beattie will be the best striker that you've had at the Lane for years. He just needs a rocket up his jacksie.

hes really good, honest he is. the fact that two 18 year olds are ahead of him in the pecking order at goodison isnt important. he scored two great penalties last year so he should get at least 4 in the championship!!!

hes a flair player, its because he looks scary people think hes a tough tackling dynamo.. when madrid signed him he had an amazing half season for us. he was the heartbeat of every attacking move we made and god knows why madrid wanted him but he was missed until we signed arteta :P

My point is I don't think we need a player like Gravesen.

I would like to see someone like Montgomery, who works hard and tackles hard. A bit more skill would be nice though...

Robson probably thinks £4 million is petty cash compared to the money he had at 'Boro. Don't forget he signed Paul Merson for about £5 million 10 years ago to help get 'Boro out of the old div 1. I think he bought about 10 players for £1 million or more in 97 & 98.

Agree we need a couple of midfielders.
Clubs are paying silly money for strikers Darren Bent etc.
If he is fit and wants to play for us he would be OK for that money.

It boils down to this would we spend £4 million on a striker or a midfielder
For most of us it seems we would opt for a midfielder but we dont know all the ins and outs on the transfer front at the minute.
What has been said is that there will probably be more signings so we shall have to wait and see.

Sheff Utd confident over Beattie

Beattie would need persuading to drop into the Championship
Sheffield United boss Bryan Robson is hopeful Everton striker James Beattie will sign for them after holding talks with the player and his advisors.
Everton have accepted an offer in the region of £4m for the 29-year-old England striker after paying Southampton £6m for Beattie in 2005.

Robson told Sheffield United's website: "Negotiations have gone well.

"Hopefully there will be something by the end of the week. I am still looking for new players."

I personally don't think Beattie is worth £4million, if we was to get him, max I'd want to pay is £2 million.

I think they're both over-rated!

I'll be honest, I like Jags - but if Moyes has bought him for midfield then it was the biggest waste of £4m EVER! If he's bought him for defence then it's a good signing!

As for Beattie - you don't just become a bad striker. maybe he needs to drop down a division to get his form back, and then next year when we're in the Prem he might be back to his old self.
