View Full Version : The Nelson pub, quick question
Just wondering if anyone can help, Ive heard the Nelson is a pretty good pub, and after being very dissapointed with a recent visit to the Dove and Rainbow Im looking for somewhere else to go this saturday with a friend.
I cant seem to find a website so was just wondering if anyone knows if its open during the day on Saturday and what the prices are like.
Cheers
fox20thc 29-07-2007, 17:24 yr disappointed with the dove? Nelson is great but gets very hot and sweaty.
its open on a saturday and the prices are the same as any other in the vicinity
Ewdenstar 29-07-2007, 17:31 we went to the Dove on Friday eve and it was rockin! Not been in for a couple of years and I would say it was greatly improved

yeah it just doesnt seem to be what it was, we used to go in for a drink and have a laugh, it doesnt seem to have the same atmosphere, it just seems to me like its not a pub anymore, they want it as a live venue, all the corner seating has been ripped out and if you dont get a comfy seat in front of the bar then your stuck on picnic benches next to the annoying pinball machines... I just dont like it anymore...
But were gonna try out the Nelson on Saturday :)
MuteWitness 29-07-2007, 17:35 The nelson is probably more expensive for drinks on a saturday than the dove with fewer offers on (think they stop at 9) downstairs is 80s rock and upstairs they play stuff like manson, rammstein etc.
It does get a bit hot downstairs! there is a smoking area. What was wrong with the dove? cant say i go there much on Saturdays but always had a good time.
Grim Reaper 29-07-2007, 17:36 I think the Nelson opens at 3 on a Saturday and after 7 theres good old rock downstairs with DJ Lez and some more up to date goth, industrial type stuff upstairs.
MuteWitness 29-07-2007, 17:41 We probably all see each other at the nelson and don't know were all from the forum!!! Next week we need to wear a sheffieldforum badge

We are indeed still a pub and very much so, just a multi purpose one with a stage and facilities for live music. The corner seating actually disintegrated in a pile of woodworm and rot literally the day we were going to take it out as it was beyond help. We needed the area for the stage extension anyway....the pub actually has MORE seating than ever before, and now 2 more benches on the stage.
Appreciate your comments though, we cannot be everything to everyone.....some people prefer us, some don't, its the same with any pub/bar....

Do you work for the nelson?? i never heard anyone complain about the dove, far from it, the staff and landlord are the most friendly people you can ever meet unlike the bar you seem so up for hyping for no reason on here, and the music is totally down to what you ask for unlike the other bar.

Thanks mate. We try and make the whole place a real friendly and welcoming atmosphere, and have a truly dynamic and amazing bar team who all get on so well together its cool. Sulking on duty is a sackable offence, and we always have a cheery and happy disposition to all. It's like one big family as everyone knows everyone, and unlike many city centre bars/pubs, you get that great and valued 'local pub' personal welcome and not the anonymous and standard approach of most other places. When I am not on the bar or being DJ I take great delight in walking around and shaking people by the hand and chatting to everyone, because that's what makes the Dove THE place to be. Oh, and top beer of course, and no complaints there at all.......
And as for the music yes we DO try and cater for practically everyone, with a very wide and dynamic range. No one is ever disappointed down here.....:)
And let me take the opportunity to promote Steve's (MAD DOG) twice Monthly night down here at the Dove, Dead Night club night, for the best in classic dancefloor rock from several decades of the golden age of rock nights in Sheffield.....its a very popular night indeed and if you have not tried it out yet, please do so.....
