View Full Version : Castleton and Mam Tor Sunday 5th August
neoteric 29-07-2007, 16:36 This is approx a 6 mile walk starting at the Public Car Park in Castleton at 11:00am. I will confirm time and post public transport details later - see below
By Bus - Number 272 Bus leaves from Sheffield Interchange at 10:00 - arrives Castleton at 10:55 - Provider First South Yorkshire Ltd
By Train from Sheffield Station at 9:33 arrives Hope at 9:59 then approx 35 mins walk to Castleton - Provider Northern Rail
Route SHEFFIELD - MANCHESTER PICCADILLY
The route takes us up through Cave Dale then flattens out a bit before a short but steep climb to the 1,695 ft (508m) summit of Mam Tor. After that there is a scenic ridge walk with the Vale of Edale on one side and Hope Valley on the other before dropping back down to return to Castleton. Lots of pubs, tea rooms, shops and a castle and caverns to visit in Castleton afterward - if anyone has the energy.
Forgive me for asking this, but you do mean 11am, not 11pm don't you?
neoteric 29-07-2007, 16:44 Yes - correct - thanks for spotting this.

Should the route be: Winnats Pass not Cave Dale? or does the approach to Mam Tor begin a fair way back at the top of Cave Dale.

Winnats Pass would be a shorter alternative but I prefer the route up Cave Dale which is the route given in the Ordnance Survey PathFinder Guide "Peak District Walks".
Are you joining us for this walk? I've not done this walk since The Tornados had a Number 1 hit with Telstar - now when was that?
cavedale is my preferred starting point aswell, obviously you have to hike over the farmlands before you reach Winnats pass but it does add some distance to the journey.
if the weathers like today you'll need plenty of H2O.

If the weather is suitable, I'll be joining you at Mam Nick. To walk the Mam Tor, Hollis Cross, Back Tor, Lose Hill ( Wards Piece & View Finder) Ridge walk, then drop down to Hope to catch either the Bus or Train home.
( I'll be waiting, whilst sat on top of the Grid Pointer, Veiwing at all and sundry below, through my specially made, extra powerful, three dimensional, with day or night, clear vision, binoculars ).
I understand that I'm in for a big shock, when I see what remains now of what was a lovely, short green grass path along the ridge that I've walked scores of times. I can remember many times when I was the only one up on the ridge. (Its like The Moor these days)
But when G.H.B.Ward donated the summit (Wards Piece) of Lose Hill to the Nation, via the National Trust he had this in mind. To ensure public access to and along the ridge for ever.
I believe had he not done so, people would now be paying to walk the private land which forms the ridge just as they do when visiting other similar features created by nature, within the National Park.
If its fine, if anyone wants a lift up to Mam Nick car park from Sheffield. Please P.M. me
I'll have room for two (or three at a squeeze).
Anyone wanting a voluntary job this afternoon. Grass raker wanted opposite the Dore Nurseries, Brick House Lane, Dore, Start 2.00pm till 4.00pm. (Job Now Almost Done).
( At your own risk and No payment made ).

Albert,
If you are joining us then please allow us good time to get up to Mam Nick - I reckon we should reach there between 12:00 and 13:00 dependant on what time we actually start walking and the weather - obviously if it's hot we will be taking it slower. If you would like to bring a map tomorrow we can arrange the actual meetup point.
Hope to see you tomorrow on the 5 Weirs walk.
PS I'm looking for someone to clean my car - same terms and conditions as Grass Raking at Dore Nursery :hihi:
I will catch the 272 bus on Eccy road, see ya at the car park! :)

I'll get dropped off at Mam Nick and climb upto the Grid Point.
If we are not allowed to go to the summit these days, due to the constant erosion of the ' Shivering Mountains Special Feature ' I'll see you close bye.
Anone wanting a lift up to Mam Nick P.M. me. We will be leaving around 11.00 am.

canada_girl 04-08-2007, 18:38 The gods have decided to smile on Adam and I and he miraculously has gotten tomorrow off. I've decided we need some beach, ice cream and a tan so we're going to Cleethorpes for the day. Have fun walking!
Am planning to go to B'ham to check up on some friends next weekend so will see you in a couple of weeks.
Oh-and send me happy thoughts Friday morning for my test! If you could telepath some British history to me that would also be helpful.;)
Will also be catching the 272 and catching up on some sleep i think!

Yeah,.... ..good luck with the "British Test" Friday CG, you'll sail thro though I'm sure. Just memorise all the royals, and you'll be fine!
neoteric 05-08-2007, 18:00 Great walk today the Peak District at it's best. Very warm and sunny to start with so quite a slog up through CaveDale - luckily there was a welcome cool breeze and a few clouds for the short but steep climb up to the summit of Mam Tor. After descending and walking towards Castleton then looking back up to the summit of Mam Tor and thinking "I've just done that" gives one a great feeling. Then onto Castleton and a well earned cold pint or two - boy was I in need of that! Once again a great walk with a great group of people.

Some great pics Neo, as usual, you've captured the day beautifully.
As you say, it was a wonderful feeling when we got to the top of Mam Tor, and wasn't half as difficult as I expected it to be. In fact, despite the heat, I think that was one of the least tiring walks we've done - pity the bus was so hot though, I think that was the most tiring part!
shoeshine 05-08-2007, 18:38 I've looked at the photo's too, neoteric.......they are lovely and brought back memories from visiting that area.
What a fantastic day! Glorious sunshine, spectacular views, smashing sarnie (thanks Scoobz!) and great company as usual. Didnt think i was going to make it but Mam Tor was well worth the climb! :D

Thanks! You British and your history - it's so D*&^ complicated!!!;) Don't know how I'll keep it all straight. . . . .

Yes I think that knowing the answer to questions like "What percentage of the UK's ethnic minorities live in the London Area?" - are really preparing you well for being a British Citizen. I would much prefer a down to earth sort of test like "Explain what - it's your round" means:hihi:
Albert T Smith 05-08-2007, 19:35 I waited at Mam Tor Summit until 12.50 hrs. I had a very enjoyable walk to Lose Hill then down to Hope where I caught the 1600 hrs 272 bus to Dore Moor Inn.
It was the first time that I had been up onto the ridge for a long time and I was very pleased to see the large number of people, many tourist, walking the ridge and especially pleased to see how the National Trust have provided the paved walking area's on both Mam Tor and Lose Hill which previously was green short grass cropped by the sheep.
The path up to Back Tor needs redoing. Though excepting the differcult geological problems faced, it is understandable why the path is like it is at the moment. I do hope that a another pathway, contructed shortly, will over come the problems.
One thing that is certain is that I can see where and how my Annual Membership Subscription to the National Trust is spent. I hope more join so that better access footpaths can be afforded in the Peak District.
We were sitting upstairs on that very same bus Albert, didnt notice you get on it though!
I thought I was imagining things when I heard strains of The Happy Wanderer drifting up the bus stairs.
Albert T Smith 06-08-2007, 08:09 I'm really sorry that I didn't come up stairs but when I got on the bus after coming down Lose Hill none stop I was too tired to climb the stairs. Three people got off at Dore Moor, I was one.
All last week I've been constipated. After descending Lose Hill non stop, with all the jiggering, I can honestly say,' That I've found an instant cure !!!'.
No only was it non-stop down Lose Hill, It was non-stop up stairs to the W/C when I got home!!.

Galloway 06-08-2007, 21:02 Having read about Albert's bowel movements (or not, as the case may be) I then read the new Thread of "useful info".
Back Tor? Embedded? Hope? ...............etc.
I took much of it literally & also (in my imagination) changed a few words (was it just a few chats you stopped for, Albert?!).
I haven't laughed so much for ages!
Yes, as above posts, too much info., Albert - but thanks for the fun of it!
Brilliant day out. Very rewarding and one of the best since i joined the group in April!
Note for car users though - the car parks in Castleton were full by 11.00 am
