View Full Version : Baby Ballroom. Anyone see it?
Just wondered what your opinion was of 9/12 year olds being dressed up like little tarts with full make up just for the parents gratification.
If they like dancing fair enough, but most of those interviewed gave the impression they were doing it because their parents wanted them to.
One poor couple admitted practising 6 nights a week...at 11.
I know it keeps kids out of trouble but they don't seem to be having a childhood.
Wondered what others thought.
fox20thc 29-07-2007, 10:22 exactly what we were saying last night, wholly inappropriate and shouldn't be on telly. Plus its a bit wierd, imagine all those odd people who like to see kids dressed up like mini adults - pervs.
Just watched the first two couples, just to see if the production was going to be as bad as it looked it might be. And it was.
Sure it will become compulsive viewing for some, but I don't think I'm in that demographic.
koenigsinger 29-07-2007, 10:33 I caught about 5 minutes of it by accident, it reminded me of those kiddie beauty pageants that they have in the states, its just wrong, very icky, so I voted with my remote control and switched the tv off.
katy1981 29-07-2007, 10:42 i watched about 15 mins of it then had to turn it off as their little china doll faces scared me too much :(

Exactly like the beauty pageants in America. These kids shouldnt be doing this, but should be out walking, fishing for tiddlers, swimming, and playing games in the sunshine. (Supervised of course, its not as safe these days)
I'm glad I'm not on my own in thinking somethings not quite right with it.
Grim Reaper 29-07-2007, 14:20 No, I personally don't agree with it. It creeps me out completely and I stand by the old adage of kids being kids.
If they want to dress up in mums clothes and make up and play thats fair enough but I've seem some where its downright suggestive.
happyhippy 29-07-2007, 17:51 I think it's awful. These sorts of programmes are bad enough as it is, but now they're subjecting kids to this. It's appalling.
This has been going on for years and years!!
maidofhonour 29-07-2007, 18:03 I'm kind of half and half with everyone on this thread.
I agree with everyones comments regarding the children looking like mini adults and that the majority made comments regarding doing it for their parents. And what really did surprise me was that for their ages they knew a lot of technical dance terms.
However I had a daughter who used to dance and although she only attended dance class twice a week we would often find her practising in front of the mirror at home. I think of the couple who said they practiced 6 nights a week a little more depth was needed as to where and when etc they practiced. Just because ballroom is partnership dancing doesn't mean that all the practising had to be together.

Doesn't make it right though.
Quite agree...if my Mother had suggested I did this when I was a kiddie I would have freaked out on the spot!!!
cressida 29-07-2007, 18:49 My mother always said she disliked precocious children, now I understand

My youngest isn't too bothered, but my elder two have been at a dancing school for ages, but I couldn't subject any of them to this.
They went there because they like dancing, that's all.
There's nothing wrong with kids dancing and enjoying it, but to create cheap TV so a load of money can be made by voting, let alone the fact that kids are being put under the media spotlight is outrageous.
yummyyumyum 30-07-2007, 01:56 im afraid i cant watch this because personally i find it wrong on so many levels.
this sort of dancing is so competative that i personally think that it is going to be very distressing for the children involved.
not only are the pushy parents going to be pushing as hard as possible but for the children voted off i would imagine their lives will be made hell.
aswell as this i hate the fact that it becomes a child "life" adn all that matters is spray tan, hair, nails and makeup.
rubydazzler 30-07-2007, 07:26 I just noticed how bright, articulate, keen and dedicated they appeared to be. It didn't seem any different to me from the little girls that do the gymnastics, that's a bit off too if you really think about it. They're dressed in figure hugging, skimpy outfits and often look made-up as well.
All these youngsters that have the sorts of interests that demand application always seem very intelligent, clean and polite though. And the parents are supportive and involved with them. You can't fault them for that.
cressida 30-07-2007, 14:30 I was at the counter of H & M ready to pay, at the side of me was a small figure who was flat-chested, and heavily made up, she kept looking at me - I didn't look at her as I wasn't sure if she was a very small teenager or a dwarf, then after sensing she was still looking at me I finally looked more closely and the heavily made up face was indeed that of a child of about l0 years with lots of blusher on - I was rather shocked andshe seemed to be on her own, I was hoping perhaps she was part of some performance at the Trafford Centre, she certainly had enough money as she was buying two pairs of small trousers.
simone1975 31-07-2007, 15:59 I watched it but had to turn off as I couldn't stand to see the look of disappointment on the little ones faces when they didn't make it through.
I used to dance competively when I was younger and I took it very seriously and was gutted when I didn't get through to the next round in competitions and it hurts your head having your hair tied up so tight!!!!
Snap. I watched it as well. With my auntie.
I do a bit of dancing as well, so it was kind of interesting to see how it all works in a competiton, but, I did find it too erm...too much. It's a little bit too freaky for me to see one couple who were too young to dance to be honest. The kids who were around 9, 10, 11 onwards looked a lot more natural with it, than this couple of kids who were around 5 or 6 years old? Their make-up were too much, and I think they were very unnatural with it. Maybe the make-up artists doesn't know how to do kids make-up more naturally??? It was this couple which made me have an unease feeling, and I know that it was because they were OTT with it. The other kids were older in comparison, and looked cute.
It did make me chuckle when one girl did stick her neck out at an angle and forget to turn it when she dances. :)
I think in any competitive sport, you have to be driven and you have to work hard at. Maybe these kids want to take it to a higher level and work to become professional dancers? Just like tennis stars do at a young age.

I felt strangely wierd and uncomfortable watching it, then i got bored with the sameness, i turned it off when Bonny Langford described one young girl of about 11 "twisting her hips" and her young male partner of "thrusting his" no no no no, these arent things you say about a couple of 11 yr olds :loopy::rant:
