Hi

Im on uncle duty again for a 6 year old girl.

I remember when I was a kid one of my favourite things ever was paddling around some safe, shallow stream with a net catching sticklebacks.

I just cant think where I can take a child to do this in Sheffield?

Im handy for Endcliffe Park and the Mayfield Valley but ive never seen them in there, plus the fishermen at Forge Dam are all a bit serious.

So Id love any help with this please.

Where can I take a small child with a net to catch sticklebacks (or newts) safely in Sheffield.

West of town preferred but happy to travel if necessary

Deepak

I've not tried getting into it with a net, but there's a cute little stream as you walk up the Limb Valley (at the far end of Ecclesall Road South).

After the floods i thought that sticklebacks would be all over Sheffield.

OMG that brings back memories

as a kid (about 6 or 7) i remember getting them from treeton dyke. Took them home in a little yellow seaside bucket and made them their own town in a baby bath in the back yard! They had a plantpot for a house, my brothers tonka toy lorry to guard them from cats and lots of weeds to eat:hihi: I even put some bubble bath in to make sure they didnt get any germs:loopy:
The thing is i could never work out why they all ended up dead the next morning:huh:

Some if not all newts are protected, so be careful! No harm in having a look, but if you take them away from their natural environment there may be trouble ahead...

Any of the rivelin dams, should be thousands of them and it's pretty safe up there.

When I was a young child we always went to Graves Park and caught many Sticklebacks. You had a Jam Jar with string to make a handle. I dont know if you can still fish there, but now there is an animal part and a lovely rose garden to sit in and have something to eat. You can also play Tennis, Bowls and pitch and putt. lovely woods to play in I can recommend it for a great day out.
