View Full Version : How many Albums do you own?
mr.blaze 19-12-2004, 12:36 I was just routing through my album collection and noticed it's now topping 1000+. Most my friends are into music in a big way or work in the music field in some way or another so I'm unsure on what most people consider a collection.
So...
How many albums do you own?
How many albums do you get a week on average?
And do you favour CD/MP3/Mini Disc or Vinyl?
muddycoffee 19-12-2004, 12:50 I have 404 CD albums and 176 Vinyl albums.
But I made a decision about 10 years ago that I was going to stop buying albums just because I had others by the same artists, as It is often a big waste of money. What you should ask yourself is how many Albums do you have which you have never, or listened to only once?
I tend to only buy stuff now if I think it's worth having. When I was younger I used to buy albums for the sake of it, to make my collection bigger. I realise now that this is a bit of a stupid waste of money. Although I sometimes buy things if I see them very cheap £4 or less, which I wouldn't have bought at full price.
And just as a matter of interest. The most popular release year for my record collection is 1986.
I only Do CD these days, as I can have that in the car too. Although I often copy a Vinyl LP on to CD so I can listen to that aswell.
I have over 450 albums bought over the years, over 50 vinyl from my parents and over 100 that i've rented from the library and use whilst on the net to listen to.
I don't but that many either now, I don't download and prefer mini disc when on the go.
mr.blaze 19-12-2004, 13:10 I see what your saying about albums you don't listen too. Quite a few of mine I got for just a song or two on the album. That Franz Ferdinand album for example I only like the song that was in the charts. I might just start buying Vinyl next year
limpetboy 19-12-2004, 13:23 I have 500 + albums between CD and MP3, but used to have over 600 just on CD, which I decimated when I was a poor penniless student. Which, by the way was the worst mistake I ever ever made as I've spent all my time trying to rebuild the collection - not easy especially when so many were rarities.
I am a fool. :(
Probably around 750+ albums (CD's & on Laptop which I used for DJing)
Don't really buy many albums and I favour MP3's or Mini Disc :D
Ive got about 5 - I think. I could quite happily live without music - perhaps Im missin out?
Mat:cool:
ToryCynic 19-12-2004, 14:55 Well,
102 CDs.
0 audio tapes (never used them anyway).
0 Vinyl
Most are bought from the shop, others are CD-CDR, and a few are download - CDR (but are a collection of mp3s, burned as an audio disc).
Yet, there are 2 albums that are MP3 files burned as an mp3 disc - i.e "Rare Radiohead" around 30 tracks on there which are downloads but as there were over 20 i couldn't burn as an Audio CD, so had to burn as a mp3 disc.
Also, I have all my Radiohead as an MP3 disc - all 6 albums.

mr.blaze 19-12-2004, 15:15 I just looked at the amount of Singles I have also, I think I need :help:

I'm the same, luckily for me they are all stored at my parents :hihi: :nono:
1,243 at the last count.
On various formats, roughly one third vinyl, one third CD and the remaining on mini-disc (was cassette). I've also transferred all my vinyl onto MD so I can listen to it in the car. There's stuff I'm listening to now that I haven't played in years. Anybody want to buy a turntable ?
Not too many I would think, I've only had about 4-5 years of collecting cause I wasn't really into music until I was 13.
I would estimate about 100 albums.
Too many music files on my PC tho :hihi:
bout 900 i fink....some dodgy, i have listened to most....i have music on nearly every minute i get chance.
got some vinyl but its all collectable stuff so doesnt get played.
:D im selling a few actually.... must stop hording things!
Well over 1000 on CD ranging from world music to punk.
Few hundred vinyls for DJing also.
Music is great.
I had to think about this recently when I bought my cd jukebox which holds 200. The problem was go for it or save a little longer and buy the 300.
So I bought the 200 which is crammed full with a few left over.
So I'd say 240 cds, I still have about 40 cassettes, which I only really listen to in the car. My parent and some of my own vinyl probably adds another 150 and then probably in excess of 1000 mp3 and finally the remains of my vinyl singles which maybe totals about 50. Then there's the collections I've burned from working away on the ships.
On the European cruises it was obligatory to have as much trance and speed dance stuff as possible, tempered with line dancing tunes, 60's 70's and 80's best ofs and then all the modern stuff. The Belgians had a big thing for Gloria Gaynor and similar. The French quite similar plus they like their own French stars but the Spanish had a big thing for the 'action' dances Las Ketchup, Agadoo, Superman etc. And, I'll never understand it but the European teens WALTZ to a lot of Brit and American pop, never seen anything like it.
So, that possibly adds another 50 cds.
Sorry, waffled there. :D I'll never understand the European relationship to music.
ive over 2.thousand cds far too many cd singles about 50 tapes and around 100 albums what stretch back 30 years ive also hundreds of mp3 discs all themed:thumbsup:
Agent Dan 21-12-2004, 16:21 I used to have about 500 but got robbed a couple of years ago... grrrr... so now only about 250 ish, although I still own over 100 singles!
*tries to improve score* Are we counting tapes?!

tslogf74 07-01-2005, 17:42 I've got nearly 13GB of mp3, and about 10 CDs. Most are stuff I used to own on CD, but I had to have a clear out when I fled the country in a hurry, so spent days ripping them all. These days I can't be arsed with physical media (other than my hard drives of course.)
I do tend to hoard mp3s, and yet every now and again I fancy listening to something that I used to own and realise I can't find it anymore :(
About five. I have hardly any music here - most of the CDs I listened to at my sisters house were hers. For some reason I never got into listening to music. I don't know why, maybe because my mum doesn't and I was taught at home, so I didn't get much exposure to the TOTP type conversations at school. I now find walking into a shop and buying a CD is far too dauting an experience. What to buy? How do I know I'll like it? Its a position I would never wish on anyone else, I'd love to be one of these music buffs and at least my flat wouldn't be so quiet!
muddycoffee 24-01-2005, 21:26 Im sorry people,
but when I count how many albums that I own, I don't count anything that is downloaded or copied. I count origional bought CDs and Vinyl with proper artwork etc..
I am not being "holier than thou", it's just that there is no value to anything that you haven't bought or been given as a gift. Surely if you have some songs on mp3 from somewhere that is not the same as owning an album.
please discuss..

Yes, I do prefer the album art; the artwork on covers is more aesthically pleasing than "Memorex CDR" on the front - however, very few of my discs say "Memorex CDR" - as I will buy the original soon after - if not at first.

All in all, vinyl, tape and cd, I have somewhere near to 4,000. They are stored in different places. I began collecting albums as a 13 year old Floyd fan. Thirty years on, I reflect that I must have swopped, given away, sold or discarded about a thousand too in this period. I don't regret a penny of it.
ToryCynic 10-10-2005, 23:15 Nearly a year on, and I've still only got around 175 CD albums.
I like standing there, and looking at the spines and choosing a good CD.
They were in piles, but I spent ages placing it into artists and then albums!!!
So now I look for Amnesiac; Bends, The; Kid A; Hail To The Thief; OK Computer; Pablo Honey
In this modern world, everyone just opens up iTunes, types in "Razorlight" and 14 tracks with the word "Up All Night" appears next to it - there are times for this, and there are others where placing a CD in a draw and having a good listen is in order.
I was listening to a Sleeper tape, but now have Alchemy - Dire Straits - I'm in the living room, and my CDs are in the loft with my equipment. However dad's tapes (Sleeper's mine) are in here with the hi-fi end - yes, the old Denon's doing well, Timo - :D
;)

I rarely listen to my older CDs - the Eric Clapton and Brothers In Arms. Chapman's another I rarely play.
I've been mainly playing the circa 1993 - 1996 - Bends / PJ Harvey / Sleeper. Or the newer, contemporary, Willy Mason, Nick Drake, Micah P. Hinson. As well as the modern Scissor Sisters / Razorlight / The Music of 2004.
:)
spyro2000 10-10-2005, 23:22 I dont think I own any albums anymore. I migth have somewhere, but I cant remember the last time I even listened to a CD, tape or Vynyl.

Ah, you see I have all of mine on the computer as well as in a hard copy - CD. I interchange between listening to the 192Kbps mp3 copy and the CD file from a CD.
I know someone that copies music from someone else (we both copy from each other) - but he doesn't keep a hard copy of it, I usually end up taking the copy back with me - he's bu**ered if his HDD packs up.
People say you can't tell the difference between an mp3 (192Kbps) file and a reguar CD - you can.
Even on bog-standard 'silver plastic' from Argos you can. I have a reasonable separates system, and I can tell a mile off - I can also tell that on PJ Harvey's "Rid of Me", where I've turned up the sound of the recording, as the original version is a 160Kbps copy (mp3), and I've tried turning up the volume before burning - sounds hissy and no emphasis on the "quiet - loud" part.
I find belting out 'Welcome To The North' a favourite past-time of mine - great track. And 'Stumble And Fall' - Razorlight.
:)
spyro2000 10-10-2005, 23:38 You are of course right, there is a clear difference in quality between listening to the 2, but the difference doesnt bother me enough to care about it.

Indeed - there's bu*er all difference between the CDs and the mp3 files of those Green Day albums - cheers iTunes - :P

There are still a few albums you haven't claimed...
:)
I own around 200 + albums on CD. But stopped buying em about two years ago due to how much I was spending :gag:. I usually only buy around one a month now, and always something I really, really want. Unless I spot a few bargains for under a fiver .
I have around 200 + cassette tapes, most of which are live recordings and didn't really cost me anything
About five years ago I was buying anything upto five albums a week !!!
Hundreds. Not sure how many. Somewhere between 400 and 500 probably
Chris_Sleeps 11-10-2005, 10:35 I have about 300, and everyone who sees it always goes "you have loads of cd's" but its not an expensive habit really. If you buy 1 a week i average it out to about £7 each, some are cheap (Fopp), and some are expensive (HMV), so £7 sorts itself out. I know people who can spend that money on cigarettes in one single night, spend it on petrol to drive themselves up and down their estate when its easier just to walk.
NEKRO138 13-10-2005, 10:28 The MUSIC is important. Never mind the covers etc.
At the last count I had over 3000 vinyl records - most of which are utter crap. As are most of my cd's for that matter. It just becomes a habit doesn't it.
Perhaps i need a better (and cheaper) hobby
ToryCynic 21-12-2005, 02:00 I'm packing my CDs away, as we're moving - and I counted 185 odd - I've also recently re-ripped all of my CDs onto a new 250GB HDD, and it is now encoded at 320Kbps as opposed to a choppy 192Kbps - thus meaning that my old 'CDR 192Kbps' have had to be re-copied from the original!
Even at 320K I can tell that there's some compression - one track Talkin' 'Bout A Revolution sounds terribly watery at the point just before Chapman tells us she's going to 'run, run, run' etc.
However, I haven't updated my Access database, which still claims that the total is 152.
Maybe it's just my hearing is very good.
Although, there are a couple of CDs that I haven't packed away, such as this Queen - Greatest Hits II - this is an original disc, and on Under Pressure, just before Freddie sings ''Pressure, pressing down on me, pressing down on you, no man that's wrong", I can hear watery-sounding crap - and this is on an original, played through a reasonable Sony CD separate and cheap ten quid headphones!
Maybe I need to stop finding compressed nastyness in tracks - all this digital lark... analogue tapes are the way - ;)
