I would really like to volunteer to mentor someone either in care or leaving the care system in Sheffield but keep coming up against brick walls as to how to do it.

I've contacted various organisations and checked out VAS and the do-it websites, NSPCC, Barnardos etc. I can't get through to anyone in Sheffield Council that can help (or sounds like they're bothered about helping!)

Can anyone help?:help: I thought volunteering would be easy! :(

Hi Tiggerchick,

You can be a volunteer Independant Visitor, which is kind of buddy, befriending scheme for looked after children who have not had contact with parents for 12mths or more. I did it with NSPCC a few years ago, you will do training for a few months and CRB checks, then be interviewed to see if suitable.

I believe NCH also have a scheme for Independant Visitors. Check their website for details.

Good Luck XXX

Thanks shinyhappy68.

The NSPCC did tell me that they operate the independent visitor scheme but also said they have no need for any new people for at least 12 months.

I have just registered with NCH but it doesn't look like they have any vacancies in Sheffield.

Its mad isn't it, so many young people need support in so many ways, they are crying out for bit of support, friendship etc people willing to be there for free, as volunteer and doors slam shut.

No vacancies!! What?? I know there is cost of training and CRB checks but surely this world is wrong? I work for NCH and will keep eyes open for you. We always need Volunteers as do Burton Street Project and most other community projects. Why not give it a go until something comes up for you.:)
