View Full Version : Clubs that play early 1990's music - where are they?
RobbyBrown 27-07-2007, 22:12 I/we went to relex a couple of weeks ago, because there is a 90s bar downstairs. We got there and it was deserted, plus they were playing take that, and tunes that would have been played in Roxy.
Now in the early 1990's, we went to the Palais and Occasions, and the music was..... well, anyone who went would know how good it was. They played the stuff that was on Hardcore FM, kind of a dodgy pirate radio staition there was back then.
Are there any places in Sheffield that play this sort of stuff?
CrookesLad 30-07-2007, 20:42 hallam union do a room full of that stuff if your a student or know any1 who is (and its in term time)
Jackdanny 30-07-2007, 22:28 scr and astrix n space!!!!
Now the leadmill did a stint of it mid week once, and the casbah plays the indie stuff...
.. but if you find out let me know

RobbyBrown 03-08-2007, 20:42 Guys, you taking me back to my early clubbing days....
I wonder if modern clubs such as the new embrace, can offer music like we had back in the day.
Doubtfull, everywhere seems to be playing 80's music
discodown 03-08-2007, 20:54 how about looking forward instead of back?
I hate this myth that "it was so much better in the day" no it wasn't. it was about the same

discodown 04-08-2007, 14:04 wasn't though. was about the same. the only real difference was the quality of narcotics!

It was better, you had.
Occasions, Palais playing proper hardcore dance music.
Rebels for a bit of headbanging
Kikis played commercials stuff, similar to what was played in the young side at Kingdoms
Roxys, was the party stuff, cairos was similar but a little more upmarket (but only a little)
And then you had the Leadmill, playin what was popular back then, ie, Charlatans, Happy Mondays, Stone Roses etc... live bands.
What is there now? every club appears to play 80's music (its 2007 for god sake), and all the other clubs seem very similar to what Kiki's was.

So true - there was a club for everything, now it's just chart music.. even the so called indie clubs are chart!
blades74 05-08-2007, 09:01 Hello, long time reader first time posting !!
I loved Techno City at Occasions, Cj's and others.
I have a few mp3's of stuff that used to be played at occasions, contact me if you want to listen/borrow.....etc

your problem isn't so much that going out is now rubbish, for you its a lack of choice and venues not playing records you like?

:thumbsup::clap:
Yes, I thought that the last time I went to the Leadmill

My issue with the modern clubs is that they all appear to play 80s music (ie Wham, Rick Astley) if they want to play 80s why not play some good stuff, ie, LL Cool J, Housenation, smiths, etc....
The early 90s was an amazing time to be going clubbing, its a shame alot of the music from that time isn't remembered more.
discodown 05-08-2007, 10:37 I can honestly say i've never been in a club in the last 5 years and heard a rick astley record?
What kind of clubs are you going to?!
Try embrace on I think the first Sunday of the month, Retro are there and they are all about classic house
Check out BAss Bar at DQ on a Thursday for some 90's Jungle music.
Keep an eye out for old skool specials as well - had Alern8 there a bit back.

Whooooooooshhhhhhhhh!!!!!!
Sorry to take the mick mate. Actually I was a cheesy quaver (check the website - link in my signature) and I know the tune very, very well - it was the one with the "I know you gonna want me" vocal sample. I danced to it many times at free parties in the New Forest.
The point I was making was that the actual quote is "Watch your bass BINS" which is the actual name for a large bass speaker. There's no such thing as a bass PIN.
Compound_Kid 17-11-2007, 18:43 Would anybody be up for a show like this on something like Sheffield Live?
Myself and my mate Simon (who was a club DJ back in the day) have been playing with the idea of pitching a show featuring classic dance music from round about 1986-1994.
This means you could play the more commercial stuff, plus hardcore, chicago house,Italo Piano stuff,Acid, plus stuff that made put Sheffield on the map for dance (LFO,Chakk,Funky Worm,Krush etc).
What do you reckon?
blades74 18-11-2007, 10:12 Bring it on I say Old Chap!
I love my collection of tunes from 87 - 93 byt no where really plays em anymore.
