View Full Version : The Ruby Lounge - Formely Dikkens
Well people, it is now open, and I went in last night, and oh my god, how different is it now?!
It's actually a nice place, and not a chav in sight...
Just needs real ale and I would become a regular!
Walked past it last night and didn't even notice :help:
New establishments must be tried and tested, I shall add it to my 'to do' list
went in there thursday night and im so glad there was a back door because i walked straight through and out the other side.. it was the same old popular sheffield crowd who im so bored of seeing out who just move in on the next big thing and claim it for themselves, just the normal run of things i guess but i did get a flash back and think i was back in takapuna two years ago,ugh now i just sound jealous lol
goldenfleece 26-12-2004, 11:50 Would anyone describe this new place as sophisticated and exclusive?

Oh well - they will move onto the Crystal Bar then in the new year and it will be safe to go to the Ruby lounge!
It's still an improvement on Dikkens though - Dikkens was well suspect.
kate_sheff 26-12-2004, 16:14 I went there on christmas eve and it was one of the only bars that you could actually move in, everywhere else was far too busy.
I thought it was a really nice bar and will definitely be going again. Really smart and lots of places to sit down, good music too.
I wouldnt wish it on anyone to open a bar at this time of year, come January everywhere will be empty.
Sophisticated, yes. Exclusive, I hope not otherwise they will never let me in again!
i totally agree its a massive improvement, would just be nice to meet a new crowd and see a few new faces, mind you they are probably just as sick of seeing me come to think of it lol!!!
Sandra Spice 01-01-2005, 13:51 Going to have a look at it on Sun. Anyone know when exactly Cristal is opening. I know it's New Year but is it soon?
The courtyard still looks like a bit of a building site, but seems to be coming on nicely. Cannot remember what it said in the Sheffield Telegraph (or was it Star). Mid-January I think.
Snakey_B 01-01-2005, 20:32 Wheres cristal opening then ?

Crystal bar is also on Carver Street, a few doors up from Ruby lounge, not quite opposite Flares, in a disused scissor works. Crystal will have 2 bars and a restaurant in seperate rooms, set round a courtyard. They are putting up a glass roof over the courtyard so you can eat and drink out there all year round, sounds like it could be quite atmospheric!
its great
I am th enew resident DJ too
if you like nice people, groovy hous evibes and a sexy sophisticated bar - this i sthe place for youy
I played Xmas eve - 1o hr ste and new years eve - with DINO an dlive bongos / truympet - watch this space - great things to come to that place I promise!! neil T

Fosters, K1664, K1664 Blanc, San Miguel, John Smiths, Guinness (sp?!) and Strongbow. ;)
That's for Crystal anyway, haven't tried Ruby Lounge out yet!
Ruby Lounge: Carling, Grolsch, Stella, Woodpecker, Strongbow, Worthingtons, Guinness, Hoegaarden.
hi greg, long time no speak!
btw ruby is a pleasent change! and not owned by the cheese fest kingdom, and a pleasure to wear trainers in
nichola2 09-03-2005, 17:42 We went in the Ruby lounge on Tues night just to see what had happened to the old Dickens place.
I was really impressed no shoes sticking to the carpet or really loud music and you could actually see, there were also some nice people in.
There were three guys who were doing an accoustic set they were really good, just a shame that the pub was'nt that busy to appreciate them
Had a really good, night makes a nice change when your thirty something to find a nice bar in sheffield, I also liked it in the crystal bar
holster100 09-03-2005, 18:02 Can't complain - I thought it was quite nice. Massive improvement on Dikkins, and lots of places to sit.
Hmm.. seems both offer a witbier option. About time too!
Whats the price of a pint like?
I went to Ruby Lounge last week and I was shocked to find how desolate and unfriendly the bar staff were. It was a Thursday night and there must have only been about five people in there. When I asked for a drinks menu I just got a shrug and a lame response of, " We don't have any". Then the bar staff were showing off their cocktail mixing skills - but to no one!!!!
Sharkeys on the other hand is the complete opposite of Ruby. The bar staff are all friendly and if you tip the staff just ten pence then they will remember you for the rest of the night and guarantee you quick service!!! Ruby Lounge is an over-hyped and over priced place!!! £3 for a corona? please!!!!
Where is Sharkeys? Not heard of it.
I didn't mind the Ruby Lounge, first time I went in last week and Id happily go back again.. Didn't think it was all that expensive :suspect:
Way better than when it was Dikkins

Sharkeys is just off West Street near Boots. Really nice bar...gorgeous cocktails. Have a really nice chill out night on Sundays and Bass Bar on Wednesdays with big names ahoy"!
medicgirl 24-03-2005, 13:19 Haven't been to Ruby Lounge, but have to say I agree about Sharkey's - have been there several times, and have booked it for private parties a couple of times too. LOVELY staff including management and DJ's, brilliant cocktails at reasonable prices, great food if you're there in daytime...well worth a visit.
Snakey_B 24-03-2005, 18:30 well i just dont like all cocktail bars , these fancy "new thing" bars are all a pile of over priced **** in my opinion
Went there for lunch today.
Pretty good all round to be honest.
Food came quick at a good price.
Surprised at being the only ones in there at 12'ish, but can't complain at all.
Will be interesting to see how it is on a busy night.
used to work at dikkins, it was awful! i know a few of the sharkeys people, deffiantely good cats!
Carborundum 28-03-2005, 12:06 Yes Ruby Lounge is definitely very expensive - at 7pm on thur only few in - I was charged £5:20 - for half lager and a pint of coke - not even a pint of lager for chissake !!!
Not worth the pice I would say .... there eare other bars in sheffield equally as trendy in sheff and cheaper ...
Oh. My. God.
There's one place I WON'T be checking out - I would have kept my money in my pocket and left the drinks at the bar!!!

I got 2 pints of lager, a large glass of wine, JD n Coke, Half a cider and a OJ for £12.. Which in a town pub I didn't think was bad
PAULSHEZ 28-03-2005, 13:47 Yes i agree the bar staff in Ruby lounge are a joke, they are absolute wasters. I was laughing that much at how uncool they are its worth the expensive bar prices.
I've not really had such a problem in Ruby Lounge.
Sharkeys on the other hand I recently walked out due to the service being slow. The bar was about 3 deep, and the useless sods behind the bar were messing round juggling vodka bottles and stuff rather than actually serving the customers! After waiting 15 minutes without any sign of getting served I walked out.
Incidentally if you thought Ruby Lounge was expensive try Takapuna - £3.80 for a bottle of Tiger beer - what a rip off!
Connect4Fun 28-03-2005, 22:20 What else is going to be built near sharkeys? its a great bar but abit confused as to why put it on a backstreet when only looks like apartments being built?
BertieBasset 30-03-2005, 09:50 give it a few months and it'll have the old dikkins crowd back in....
sheffbag 31-03-2005, 07:28 went in yesterday for lunch, took one look at the menu (7 quid for a burger with a few lettuce leaves nothing else!!)
needless to say didnt stay, wasnt impressed at all by it
the fonz 31-03-2005, 09:45 Anybody got any idea about what (if anything) is happening to Metro which was under Dikkens, now the Ruby Lounge. You can see the entrance at the front but it dont look like its been used for a while.
King_Solomon 03-04-2005, 12:55 Let me enlighten you on what Sharkeys is and how to get served quicker and anything else you want to know. I have been working in Sharkeys from day one on doors, yes folks I am one of the people who asks you for ID, one of the men in black. If you cant get served downstairs, then make your way upstairs where the bar is empty (upstairs is open at around 9pm) - you get served very quick there.
Alot of people do not realise that there is an upstairs bar in Sharkeys. Friday night I would say is the best as you have DJ's on both floors - Phonetics upstairs and a DJ downstairs.
If you are really into cocktails then try a SCREWBACK - really strong, tasty and a couple of them are enough to make you happy!
If you want to know more just ask!

If you want expensive I managed to pay more for a bottle of beer in Crystal than I did for the same stuff in Paris last week (ooh get you). When the council go on about matching the best in Europe...

I assume you're aware that there's no way any beer you buy in any bar could possibly be cheaper than Paris (bar stupid student offers) purely because of the high amount of tax on a bottle of beer in the UK compared to a bottle of beer in France?
went in last night and was really good!! definately an improvement form the last time i went - quite a good vibe and full of totty!!
