i have just got myself some ddr 667 memory and im going to be overclocking my core 2 duo e4300 cpu.

i was wondering if there is any software which will push my pc to the limit to test its stability after overclocking?

The latest version of 3dmark is usually good for giving a stress test... configure it so it loops and let it run for a while... should give it a workout.

I can never understand why people over clock any more, games and applications don't need it, so you gain an extra 200/300 mhz and decrease the life span of your cpu, and increase risk of damage, and crashing etc...

that paticular cpu is designed to be overclocked. i might as well increase the performance if i can. i oc'd it from 1.8 to 2.35 per core. thats a substantial increase of over .. it ran fine, just want to stress test it to make sure.

a cpu will run for 10 years + if it runs for half that at an increased speed i dont mind, i will have upgraded by then anyway.

ive never known a cpu break, ive worked in the industry, seen 100's of cpus & seen every other part of a pc break. ive had an athlon 1ghz running at 1.33ghz for the last 6 years, 24/7, without a problem.

memtest86 (http://www.memtest86.com/) is good for testing your memory, folding@home (http://folding.stanford.edu/) will stress the cpu (and maybe find a cure for cancer)

what on earth were you doing to them?

Simply running them 25-30% above normal, 24/7 can be enough:(

Prime95 is what you need. It's a CPU 'torturing' program, which generates prime numbers. It's great for stability testing. Also use Memtest86 to stress test the RAM.

I saw a good guide to doing all this last week:
