View Full Version : Rude shop assistants
There are are certain number of people who serve in shops who think they are doing you, as a customer, a favour, I called in Dixons in fargate Sheffield because I wanted to buy a video recorder.
This big head on the upper floor was so arrogant it was unbeleivable, every genuine question I asked him was met by a sarcastic remark or a sneer.
He got me so angry I could have dropped him one, his attitude was that he couldn't care less whether I purchased or not and I as the customer was a hindrance and an anoyance.
Who do these idiots think they are, they only work there for heavens sake, so, after suffering humiliation at the hands of this moron, I walked out and bought a video recorder elsewhere.
I wish now, I had reported him to his superiors for insubordination, but not being a sneak and a telltale I didn't bother as I would have felt awfull had he got the sack because of me.
Phanerothyme 18-08-2003, 08:56 You did the right thing and voted with your feet. If they didn't want your money, that is their lookout.
The man could obviously not call himself a salesperson.
There are still some places where making a purchase is an enjoyable experience, but they are fewer and farther between.
Tom in Bradway 18-08-2003, 09:49 I had exactly the same problem with that branch of Dixons. I went in to buy a laptop about 18 months ago. When they were taking payment for it the assistant who obviously had no idea about computers, tried to sell me the infamous 'Extra Care', which was nearly £200 on top of the list price of the machine.
I of course refused, after a couple of minutes of trying to persuade me he called his supervisor down from upstairs who in turn began to insult my intelligence, and basically called me stupid for not wanting the extra insurance.
At that point I told them where to stick it and walked out, and they lost an £800 cash sale and both looked very embarrased.
I subsequently bought my laptop from a small independent PC shop in Chesterfield for a lot less, and was much more of an enjoyable experience.
I was disgusted and will never shop at Dixons again, not even for a packet of batteries.
My opinion is, if they stopped employing salesman and employed IT and electrical specialists who know what they are talking about they'd make a lot more money!
Tell me about rude shop assistants, went to meadowhall to a sports shops on sunday to return an item and this woman would not give her surname when my husband wanted to complain about hershe even had my husband removed from the store by 5 security guards and then they followed us around meadowhall.
Even thieves don`t get that sort of following from security guards so why we got it I can only guess it`s because of my husband size as he never got angry he deals with customers him self he was just persistent.
just complain to the head office, or failing that trading standards
As well as working in a nursery, I work in a Somerfield. Now, usually we're all very happy and smiley, but when the weather gets warmer the last place we want to be on a weekend is stood behind a counter! If we have happy customers who come in with a smile, don't just throw their items at you and throw their money at you, then it makes the atmosphere better for all of us. Another thing that gets on my nerves when I'm at work... we get customers coming in at 4 when they know that's when we close. If it was them waiting to come home at 4 and people were still wandering around they wouldn't be pleased! I'm generally happy when at work, but sometimes customers think everything should revolve around them, and it can't, causing them to kick up a stink! I don't like to be nasty but sometimes that's the way things happen! You have to earn respect am afraid!

I usually give shop assistants a lot of leeway 'cause I don't think I could put up with their job for minimum wage. Having said that, there are times when they do try my patience.
In Dixons I once asked if they supplied an add on for a tv which would enable teletext (they do exist but you need somewhere like Maplins) and the assistant laughed. I asked, in a very po-faced manner, whether she was trained to laugh at customers. It's fun when you physically see the blood slowly drain from someone's face.

LMAO. I too usually give them leeway, as I've been there and done that in the past. Working for JJB sports years ago, on the shoe/trainer counter, it got VERY hectic on saturdays.
However, if they are abnormally rude and I haven't warranted the abuse, I let rip with some smart ass, sarcastic comment which leaves them stumped!
I like those moments!
Bucketta 18-08-2003, 17:30 As an ex-employee of Dixons Stores Group (Freeserve, don't hold it against me) I can definitately agree they are on the whole a shower of folks of dubious parentage.
My favourite from whilst I was there there was a poor chaps experiences in Dixons, Leeds. I can't remember it all but my fave bit is that after some time the customer demanded to see the manager. The assistant genuinely asked said customer if he would like to see the manager now or would he like to wait for an hour ???!!!
*Twinkle* 18-08-2003, 18:16 I've just got myself a job as a shop assistant. It's only to get me a bit of money and to prove I've not lived off my parent's until I'm 18. Its sort of hard for me because I missed all the training, but as I did my work experience there I can kind of remember what I'm supposed to be doing lol!
I find the tills especially hard. I've never used one before and being trained with them on the job is hard! I've been told it'll be second nature to me soon enough, but right now it's difficult!
Where I work we have to have several interactions with the customer. And as I'm new, all the senior staff are watching me to make sure I reapproach customers. It isn't helpful when they've got a mood on! If I'm not seen to be going back on the reapproach because I've had my head snapped off, I get it in the neck from the staff who's watching me.
Grrr!
I'd advise anyone I know to keep away from the Dixons group. I have personally had trouble with them on numerous occasions and am also aware of many other people who have also suffered problems. I don't like the fact that they are eager to push any problems across to the manufacturers. They also use common ploy's like stating that they are just the manufacturers agents which is rubbish, my contract is with the retailer not the manufacturer. They basically don't want to know and co-operate very little. To add to this I get sick and tired of staffs sales patter "would you like to buy a 5 year guarantee?" There's no such thing as a bought guarantee.
Dixons are on my never to shop there list - poor service and poor value for money.
I went to a shop called gamers or something like that today and I saw a product for sale at £34.95 with a sticker saying guarrenteed lowest price. Yet, HMV 2 mins walk away it was retailing at £29.99.
That can't be right.
Got it in one DB. Somerfield at Manor Top... only work one day a week though! You'll have to guess which day that is! Anyone ever come in?

I realise of course that shop assistants, bank clerks, council workers etc. do have to deal with very awkward customers at times, and for that reason I always have a joke with them If I see they are receptive, I usually leave them with a smile on their face and they appreciate it. As when I leave, they always say thank you and goodbye, it is just these nasty buggers that I CANNOT STAND.
*Twinkle* 18-08-2003, 21:03 Yeah it's always nice when someone makes an effort to be nice to you. Even when I've just dealt with the customer from hell I have to pick myself up and be nice to the next one and the one after that...
It's really nice if you go out of your way to be nice to someone, they are at least pleasent back to you!
Shop assistants can be a pain, but my mum manages a shop so I hear both sides of the story.
I once took a jumper back to Next which didn't fit me after I'd washed it. Instructions were hand wash and although nowadays I do stick everything in the washer, in those days I really took care of my clothes so i did hand wash it.
As it was bought in a sale, I thought that it had probably been stretched by previous people trying it on. However the manager said he wouldn't take it back, nobody else had returned one, and he could "smell" that it had been machine washed!!!!!!!! What a remarkable sense of smell he must have had
Anyway sent it off to Customer Relations, they tested it and lo and behold I got my cash back.
That was about 8 years ago and I've never ventured in Next again.
To be fair, these people work for minimum wage or slightly above, and most do it as a means to supporting their education, e.g. Uni students, part time hours. They have to take a lot of cr*p from customers as they are the first line, and very often problems aren't their fault, so sometimes you can't blame them for poor customer service. Blame the companies who pay peanuts for such jobs. If they offered more then they'd get more than just broke uni students applying for temporary part time positions.
