View Full Version : What instrument would you maybe like to learn?
I've long been tempted to try out piano/keyboards but i always think...i'm a pretty average guitarist and dont practice enough on that so why take more time away from myself.
I had 1 lesson on drums and although quite fun (and good exercise!) i dont like the kit involved and lugging that around would soon test my patience.
(i've just noticed how lazy all that makes me sound..haha)
I play Bass guitar and a bit of drums, and Cuica. Self taught, no virtuoso, but it's a living. I've been thinking about getting a theramin, still have to look into where to get one, etc. but fascinating instrument, very strange.
Banjo Griner 27-07-2007, 09:42 The sitar. Can't be that different to the banjer.
I miss playing instruments immensely- they were a huge part of my life. I used to practice for anything up to 6 hours a day when I was playing.
Unfortunately, my bowing arm no longer works like it should so I can't play any more. I'd love to learn a new instrument though- so if anyone can think of a genuinely one armed instrument (and it has to be the left arm, cos my right isn't going to get any better) please let me know.
Oh- and please don't recommend a harmonica- I'm bored with that cos there's not much ensemble playing you can do with it!

How about the autoharp? There's not many one-handed stringed instruments, but the autoharp fits the bill. Other than that I'm at a loss. Tin whistle?

French horn.
It is the only brass instrument where you need only your left hand, your right hand is stuffed up the bell!
Also an interesting one too as it plays in the key of F
Therefore when you play a C it sounds as an F
But my right hand can't extend out to hold the bell- that's my point.
I've got lots of experience and exam passes in tuba and flugelhorn, so it wouldn't be too much of a problem learning french horn, but I'd need some sort of stand to hold the horn and that would mean that I couldn't move when I was playing at all.

I'd not thought of autoharp- thank you, I'll investigate it. Tin whistle still takes your right hand, and I can't move my fingers fast enough to make it work (I've tried that one).
Guitar or Bass.
You may not need to do the fingering with your right hand, but you do need the muscle tone and speed to pluck or strum- I'm afraid I've had to give away my mandolin for the same reasons.
I used to play the violin (rather badly) many years ago, so I'd like to have another go at that. I'd also like to take up the guitar, something I've been toying with for ages.
The instrument I'd really like to learn how to play is the piano.

Yes, I think I'd like to take up the violin again... I'm learning to play the piano now, (about grade 2 at the moment!!) after that maybe a flute...
Ok it would take a lot of thought etc, but rik allen of def leppard re-thought his drums and is infact now a better drummer then he was..and this guy...www.myspace.com/benjaminteacher well its inspiring and outstanding that someone can get to such a level!!
elephantnellie 28-07-2007, 22:38 I wanna play the guitar much much better.
And i wanna try the violin!
SleepyHead 01-08-2007, 16:08 I fancied playing t'organ, but playing t'pedals were a reet 'eadache.
Other than that I fancy having a go at the accordian sometime, mainly because all the music I've heard on it seems irrepressibly cheery.
guitar_bob 03-08-2007, 17:39 I love the expressiveness of a well played saxophone. Sadly it just sounds like something's been mortally wounded when I try to play one
I'd quite like to learn to play the piano but considering that I already play guitar/bass about 6 hours a day it'd mean that I'd have to miss out on the finer things in life like sleeping.
