View Full Version : Apart from in a zoo, has anyone ever seen a Llama?
Sam Miguel 17-12-2004, 19:02 I just wondered if any of our members had seen a llama in its natural habitat?
I've see them in zoos and on the wildlife programmes on TV (to me they they look like push-me-pull-yous with 50% less head) but have never actually bumped into one in the wild.
What about you?
evildrneil 17-12-2004, 19:07 I've seen a couple in fields just south of Sheffield if that counts?!
I see one on Coronation St every Sunday, Monday, Wednesday and Friday, Gail Platt anyone?
yeah theres a fair few in good old wales!!!
Disco_Cat 17-12-2004, 19:28 I know soemone who works fora bank and he represtns someone called Mr Palmer who is a Llama Farmer.
They had some when we took the kids to one of those open farms....dead cute and soft, but the little buggers spit (llamas not the kids) :D of course children being what they are thought it was great

There are usually a few in the fields in these parts, usually with sheep, but I'm not sure if they're alpacas or llamas. I'm told they are very good at protecting sheep from foxes and stray dogs.
marsh lane ,eckinton just past the post office, theres 1/2 dozen in a field on the left hand side, about 200 yards up from the post office

Thats right Greybeard. They get on fine with sheep but get REALLY territorial when dogs and fox's are around.
Llama farm in Ringinlow area. Turn right just after the Norfolk Arms, past the rocking horse shop and about 200 yards on your right. They may be Alpacas but I think they're a similar animal.
PS. Some pedant will probably lecture us about the flora and fauna of the high Andes region of South America
Pedant alert - the ones at Ringinglow are Alpacas.

A friend is starting a trekking in Derbyshire with Llamas scheme in the New Year. You don't ride them or load them up you just lead them on a rope. It's meant to be very therapeutic and stress busting.
Plus, I saw a 3 legged one in The Wood Green Animal Sanctuary down in Cambridgeshire. Not really it's native environment but s/he seemed happy enough.

Yes they're alpacas, but there's one llama among them the owner keeps as a pet. Spot the difference anyone?(now that's pedantic!)
hounsfieldjr 18-12-2004, 19:18 I've seen lots in the wild. My best party trick involves giving pleasure to a llama. Never tried it with an alpaca or a vicuna though.
Sam Miguel 19-12-2004, 14:28 Giving pleasure? What do you mean by that exactly?
Are you saying that you take them out to the seaside or theme parks for the day and stuff?
Not in its natural habitat but in a field near where I live. Can't say that they are a good looking animal.

Bizarrely, I was shown how to pleasure a llama by a Danish pig farmer on a hill in Ecuador. You just rub the mane, a bit higher than the shoulder blades, and sort of dig in with your thumbs. They make a funny face and roll over. I'd volunteer to show how it's done, but it appears we only have alpacas in Sheffield.
Sam Miguel 22-12-2004, 18:46 That's amazing stuff. But can't they turn quite nasty when they want to?
daniella00 28-02-2007, 11:14 There are alpacas at Hazelbarrow Farm now in Norton, they have just bought some and they are lovely!! so friendly! You should go and have a look!!
HappyHoosier 28-02-2007, 13:02 Loads of people raise alpacas and llamas in Indiana, USA, too. At our annual county fair, young llama farmers dress their animals in fanciful costumes and parade them around the fairgrounds. Now that's weird.
Lived in Argentina for a few years so got to see lots and lots of llamas etc wandering around. One memorable time when camping involved my boyfriend making faces at one which had come over to check us out, until he got just a little bit too close and it spat nasty green chewed up stuff all over him. They are excellent aims!
Solomon1 28-02-2007, 15:16 i thought he lived in a house?
By comparison to llamas, alpacas are cute, snuggly and sweet-natured.
I'd still rather be round either of them than camels though- got bitten by a dromedary while doing a trek on one (that wasn't much fun at all).
yup.saw some in fields up ringinglow last year some alpacas too, think some one up there is breeding them for their wool ?
you can go treking with them somewhere near to Whitby
melthebell 28-02-2007, 19:01 metagalactic llamas battle at the edge of time
daniella00 01-03-2007, 10:22 The alpaca farm at Mayfield breeds them for their wool, Ive found that llamas spit more than the alpacas, the llamas are also more stubborn!!
BasilRathbon 01-03-2007, 10:42 Does anyone know how to avoid being chased by a llama should you encounter one while out walking? My girlfriend and I came across one in a field of sheep while out between Dodworth and Silkstone and found it more than a little unnerving.
MattTurner 01-03-2007, 11:39 My girlfriend with a llama when we went llama trecking a few years ago!

For one thing, avoid making eye contact. Many animals take that as a challenge. I once gazed too long at a male buffalo and it pawed the ground, snorted loudly and charged me! Luckily, there was a fence between us.
There is one in the next farm over from my Aunties up in High Bradfield. I see it everytime we go up there. It bit my cousin once :hihi:.
slimsid2000 01-03-2007, 12:58 There were some lovely alpackas (sp?) at Stannington Carnival last July.
lizzmobile 01-03-2007, 14:51 Saw loads in Peru, in the Andes. Also lots of alpaca, beautiful creatures.
