Come on now, be frank. Which group or artist (I use both terms lightly) really get on your t*ts?

For me it's The Corrs (or rather The Bores). Same old middle of the road clap-trash, radio friendly safe tosh.

They're about as Oirish as an O'Neill's pub.

Pathetic!

Will Young/Gareth Gates.

Especially Will Young for the crime of completely bastardising the classic "Light my fire" originally done by the late Jim Morrison.

Honestly the lad just can't sing, he only won Pop Idol cos teenage lasses fancy him for some ungodly reason.

basically I really cant stand all these half-decent bands that are made out to be rock gods when they blatently have very little song writing or playing skill, although with the exception of Darkness, they do have skill but their songs just grate on my nerves... lol

Maroon 5 - I am in danger of falling asleep immediately whenever I hear a song of theirs on the radio.

The Darkness - some moderately good guitar playing, but absolutely no imagination all their songs sound exactly the same

Girls Aloud, Busted - these just go without saying! just unmitigatingly awful.

What really irritates me is people who call vocal groups bands. Bands are people who play music. Not people who jig about and sing accompanyment to a backing track.

Bucks Fizz - Pop Group
Rolling Stones - An R&B Band
Spice Girls - Pop Group
The Streets - (A bloke who makes up music on his own and gets a few mates to help him here and there)
The Corrs - Bland but they're a band
Darkness - Band
Goldie Lookin' Chain - Not sure, think they're a collective?
Ronan Keating - Solo Artist

You're absolutely right, of course, Muddycoffee.

Normally I'm very careful about how I use the word 'band', and it doesn't belong anywhere near anything to do with Simon Fuller et al, so I do apologise.

Im sorry StarSparkle I wasn't having a go at anyone on here. It's just the music industry in general, who have cheapened the talents of people who can play. Makes me really mad. But it's too late now as the word Band is now common parlence for Pop Group which does sound old fashioned now.

Some bands are so bland that everytime i hear them, a little bit of sick comes up into my mouth just to give me something to think/retch about.

Such bands are Maroon 5 and Keane...

I can't stand them, at all!

It's ok, Muddycoffee, I was really having a go at myself! I pride myself on my musical tastes, and take a lot of care usually in who I call a band, and am really embarrassed to have slipped up!

It's just that, as you say, Pop Group or even just Group sounds very old-fashioned now. Perhaps we should invent a new word to cover manufactured, Svengali-led, talentless purveyors of pap who probably don't even sing the material (written by someone else), never mind play the instruments.

Anyway, I agree with everything you say above.

Cheers,

StarSparkle

I have another one to add to my opinion of Beautiful South, who I think are lacking. In their music/lyric writing skills.

Space. Good idea and ok writing, but just not good enough execution. Their frontman in an interview explained that he was trying to make unusual music which had an old time feel and a sort of Noel Coward Vocal. Which is a great sentiment, but it just wasn't ridiculous enough. At the time I used to play walking basslines in the ******** band, and I could make them ten times more rediculous/interesting. And his version of a noel coward vocal made him seem like his english was bad, rather than a Noel kind of speech impediment. Especially when he said " female is more deadly than the male" which sounded like deadlier than the male" which used to rev me right off the clock. If his pronunciation was much clearer it would have worked.

I used to enjoy Heather bouncing about singing her well endowed songs and wondering if her corsitry was going to last the strain. [sorry about that]
What I used to hate about them was they had a percussionist who went by the name of `shovel` on account of his large hands.

My hands are so large that my little finger is as big as his wrist. If I was in the band they'd have called him tiny.

Chris Martin's singing is the melodic equivalent of nails scraping their way slowly down a blackboard. I do love 'The Scientist' though, as long as I'm listening to one of the covers and not the original. So for that single redeeming feature, Chris Martin and his miserable Coldplay chums just miss out on inclusion in my room 101.

At the extreme risk of lambasting from anyone over 50, I'd have to say the Beatles are MASSIVELY overrated IMO.

Ah but doesn't the chorus "Are we human or are we denser" make you think? Does he mean "denser" as in we're growing progressively thicker as a race, or "denser" as in the problems of overpopulation draining the earth's natural resources?

It's certainly keeping me awake at night - you don't get that kind of dichotomy with other popular songs such as "The Lady In Red" by Chris Rea.

Incidentally did you know her real name isn't actually Lady Ga Ga - it's Muriel Sidebottom and she was born and raised in Heckmondwike?
She actually took both her inspiration and her stage name from hearing a Queen song when she was 17 - unfortunately I can't remember which one, but I suspect it was probably "Fat Bottomed Girls".

They looked so promising when they started out with 'All these things that i've done' an awesome song in my view. To say they haven't lived up the hype is a massive understatement as they haven't had 1 decent song since then. Definitely one of the worst successful bands ever.

Cold War Kids - Something is not right with me. A horrible, horrible song, the guy's voice is just wrong. I can't bear to listen to it :gag:

Any boy band who top the list, surely? Erm, where to begin... Take That, Westlife, Boyzone and the other less known ones that actually did us a favour and vanished before they were beaten within a inch of their designer mullet donning, skinny t-shirt wearing, bland mono-toned voiced lives. If there was ever a reason to bring back capital punishment, then boy bands would be a damn good example. Crimes against humanity

I don't find her particularly irritating, as I'm pretty confident she'll be dead inside 5 years, so there's no point, but I find it bizarre that after a couple of half decent albums, Amy Winehouse is talked about in the music press like she's the greatest singer/songwriter of all time.

Sorry - that doesn't make sense. If he was asking that question the words would be "are we human or are we dancers", or if he is referring to an individual "Are you human or are you a dancer" which wouldn't scan.
The whole question is academic anyway since it's possible to be both human and a dancer so the two subgroups are not mutually exclusive.

Perhaps in view of the inherent dichotomy, the song should be withdrawn from sale until the lyricist has clarified what he means?

Agree about UB40, they've spent they're entire career rehashing regae tunes and turning then into dismal, dreary elevator music. Talentless no-marks.

I saw a great spoof of Red Red Wine once, called "Whine, whine, whine" it was very apt

Freddie Mercury may have been a fine and distinctive singer, but his lyrical skills left a lot to be desired.

For example, there's a line in the Queen song "Don't Stop Me Now" in which Mercury yells "200 degrees, that's why they call me Mr Fahrenheit". Now, I'm the last person in the world to be pedantic, but surely if Mr Mercury's body temperature is 200 degrees, he is seriously ill and, should seek immediate medical attention? Indeed, further on in the song he threatens to explode so he's clearly aware of his condition.

The irony of course is that the title of the song "Don't Stop Me Now" is actually the last advice a medical professional would give. They'd probably say "Stop immediately, Mr Mercury - you need to go straight to hospital!"

And we wonder why kids who were educated in the 1970s are so ignorant of science and medicine.....

When he says dancer he doesnt exactly mean dancer, he's using it as a metaphor for a rehearsed act - something without emotion or individuality like when dancers dance in a group they have to all be coordinated - as opposed to humans who are emotional and individual. The reason its dancer and dancers is because he doesn't mean a bunch of dancers he means dancer as a quality. If you dont add the S its an adjective rather than a noun, and he does this because he's using it as a descriptive word. Basically he's saying is america just full of the dancer quality.
Make sense? I don't think i've explained it that well but you should get the gist.

For musical variety, melody progression and song structure, name another band in the last 20 years who can touch them! As this is a forum - somewhere to discuss and debate opinions rather than squabble over and rubbish them - I'll happily discuss your opinions with you. I'm not going to massage your ego though. You seem to be doing enough of that yourself ;).

So, the first album was a massive success with fans and critics alike. I don't think that's a point you can argue. You're right to an extent about their second album in that the inspiration for it seemed to be gleaned more from their experiences as a band in the public eye rather than school, growing up and going out but still, where's the crime in that? The album is still packed with great riffs, rock-roaring intros and outros, anthems and melodies, much to the delight of existing fans and new audiences alike. And the third album, who can say? Have you polled the public for their opinion or ar you basing your statement on your's and your mates' opinion? I guess we'll see how well it is anticipated when the promo starts and how well it is received when it goes on sale.
No need to wait, just play an Oasis album on the wrong speed and away you go... Why don't you try it and see if you're right? Or indeed wrong.

To be honest, I've only got involved in this debate as I dared to question someone's statement that they were "talentless". How dare I?
