Hi,

We have found the perfect venue for the ceremony and we've picked a date, its still available - YAY!

The next step, I'm told is to get permission from the Registrar General before the booking can be made. The problem is, I can't get my head around the council website - it says we need to register 16 weeks in advance but I understood we needed to do something 12 months in advance.

Has anyone been through this? How quick is it and how much do we pay up front?

Thanks

We provisionally booked the venue, then rang the local registrar to the venue and booked them, they conduct the ceremony. This was done in april for a november wedding

we then got in touch with the registry office (in person) local to where we lived and sorted the licence etc through them. this can be done really up to 3 weeks before the wedding (you need 3 weeks for the licence)

It cost us £30 each for the licence and £200 i think for the registrar for the wedding

Neither of those were sheffield though, but it should run in a very similar way....

Thanks,

Are all registrars based in the Town Hall or should there be a Registrar nearer to the venue?

I would have asked myself but their phone lines close at 4pm and I thought of this at ten to 5. I'll try calling round tomorrow.

you might be better asking the venue, they will have better experience.

our registrars were based at Ashbourne Register office and Chesterfield Register office, not the town halls...

Yeah, but they're in the process of appointing a Wedding Co-ordinator and when my partner called in they didn't seem to have a lot of info yet (the Wedding isn't till 2009). I'll give them a call too and see what they say.

ahh i see, to be honest with a date that far away i'm not sure you'd be able to book yet, i'm not sure how far ahead you are allowed...

hopefully someone else with experience of sheffield (if thats where you are) might help too :)

One of the Hotels we looked at said we had to book with the registrar 12 months ahead. I realised 20 is few more, but people keep saying if we don't book early we won't get the venue we want.

Hi geckoqueen. I don't know if you've been to the registry office in Sheffield or not but I got a booklet from there explaining everything you need to know and also there is some very useful info. too. Once you have given notice to marry it is only valid for twelve months. i don't know if this answers your question but if you can get to the registry office the booklet could be very useful to you. Good Luck
